Healthiest Greek yoghurt please!

Where I thought I was being super healthy having “Greek” yoghurt with fruit and seeds for breakfast…
I use Yeo Valley Greek STYLE yoghurt which is apparently not as healthy as I thought!
Any recommendations for a widely available authentic Greek yogurt?

What health angle are you going for?

Shouldbedoing · 06/06/2025 08:44

Aldi and Lidl do a Greek or a Turkish yogurt. The percentage of fat, protein, lack of additional ingredients tell.you alll

Brooklyn70 · 06/06/2025 08:45

are you after the one with more protein?

Peridot1 · 06/06/2025 08:45

Fage is good. Most of the supermarkets do their own. Just avoid anything that says “Greek Style” as you have discovered.

Then it’s up to you whether you want low fat or fat free or full fat.

Mulledjuice · 06/06/2025 08:45

I choose to buy an organic greek-style over a non-organic greek - i check the ingredients and nutritional profile to make sure i know what I'm getting.

Procrastination4 · 06/06/2025 08:46

Fage Greek yogurt? The natural one, not the ones with flavours added. The plain one also comes in a 0% fat version, if that’s what you want. Add your own fruit, and you can also add seeds if you wish.

wordywitch · 06/06/2025 08:46

I like the Tesco Finest Greek yogurt.

Snap!😊

What do you mean by healthy? Authentic Greek yoghurt is quite high in fat, but that isn't a problem unless there is some reason why you need to keep your fat intake down.

It is very healthily low in carbs.

Afaik the Greek "style" isn't less healthy. It's just much less lovely.

SomethingAboutNothing · 06/06/2025 08:48

Skyr yoghurt is higher in protein and lower in fat than greek yoghurt.

Xiaoxiong · 06/06/2025 08:48

What do you mean by "healthy"? Proportion of protein to fat?

tweetypi · 06/06/2025 08:49

Tesco finest is great. Anything 0% fat is not!

ilparadodosdoltos · 06/06/2025 08:49

We have both Fage and Y Valley Greek style in the fridge - the latter has no added ingredients. What makes it unhealthy to you? I thought the ‘style’ bit was a legal thing because it was made in Somerset, that’s all.

socasuallycruelinthenameofbeinghonest · 06/06/2025 08:50

fage 5% - the 0% is minging. Fat is not the enemy. However it’s very expensive - Tesco Finest is a close dupe and cheaper.

Azuresky68 · 06/06/2025 08:50

Authentic Greek yoghurt not Greek style is better. Look for one with live cultures. Easily available in all supermarkets. I buy mine in Aldi. You can get 0% fat and 10% fat. After years of eating low fat foods the current trend seems to be to avoid them.

SisterTeatime · 06/06/2025 08:52

It’s hard to get organic sadly, but of the rest I like Fage 0% and M&S 0%. Although the M&S 10% is delicious! Delicious, lovely fat.

I think Skyr is like Quark. I don’t usually eat flavoured yogurt but the Isey blueberry flavour is good and doesn’t contain any weird ingredients (the other flavours do) - it’s great with blueberries.

Xiaoxiong · 06/06/2025 08:55

Yes I thought the same @ilparadodosdoltos - you're only supposed to call it Greek yoghurt if it's made in Greece with Greek ingredients. Greek-style can be made anywhere, you just have to check it hasn't had sugar or thickeners added. (Yeo Valley doesn't appear to have!)

Also, for the yoghurts that have a lower percentage of protein, it's often the same stuff as the higher protein % because it hasn't been strained as much. You can take lower protein % yoghurt and strain it to make it thicker (and more protein per g).

No3392 · 06/06/2025 08:58

The 'style', as previously mentioned is because it's not made in Greece.

Same as champagne, halloumi etc.

Some will be better than others. I prefer a thicker consistency and like the Aldi ones.

Xiaoxiong · 06/06/2025 09:32

Whereas I mix chia seeds into my yoghurt, so I prefer a live yoghurt that starts a bit thinner because the chia seeds thicken it right up. I tried it once with the Waitrose 1 greek yoghurt and it was so thick with the chia seeds I could have plastered walls with it.

BangersAndGnash · 06/06/2025 09:51

I like the Lancashire Farm Greek yogurt.

It is called ‘Greek style’ but is strained like Greek, thick not sloppy, and has a high fat and protein content and live culture.

But much much cheaper than Fage

For some reason it is in the Asian section of chiller cabinets rather than with the other yogurts

If you have certain models of ninja air fryer (we have a 15 in 1) you can make your own and it’s deeeelicious. There might be other ways.

Chewbecca · 06/06/2025 09:55

'Greek style' is not necessarily 'bad', depending on your definition of bad.

Tim's Greek Style for example is excellent and delicious.

pizzaHeart · 06/06/2025 09:56

What is the problem with Yeo Valley yogurt? How is it not healthy?

Ancasta · 06/06/2025 09:56

Yeo valley organic 5%

OldieButBaddie · 06/06/2025 09:57

Fage 2% is the best I MO. 5% too claggy and 0% not tasty enough
