Where I thought I was being super healthy having “Greek” yoghurt with fruit and seeds for breakfast…
I use Yeo Valley Greek STYLE yoghurt which is apparently not as healthy as I thought!
Any recommendations for a widely available authentic Greek yogurt?

If you have certain models of ninja air fryer (we have a 15 in 1) you can make your own and it’s deeeelicious. There might be other ways.

I’ve made my own Greek yoghurt in an Instant Pot multi cooker, which has a dedicated yoghurt making button. I strain it afterwards and give the lactic acid (diluted) to my plants, as you aren’t meant to pour it down the drain. The yoghurt is very yummy.

allgrownupnow · 06/06/2025 10:05

Is the aldi yoghurt different to Lidl? Asking because none of the lidl yoghurt contains any live cultures so I never buy it.

It’s not Greek yoghurt if it’s made in your kitchen….unless you live in Greece!

Mide7 · 06/06/2025 10:15

It’s yogurt. It’s basically all “healthy”

Fage is good. Most of the supermarkets do their own. Just avoid anything that says “Greek Style” as you have discovered.

Then it’s up to you whether you want low fat or fat free or full fat.

"Just avoid anything that says “Greek Style”

Why?

Lidl do do a genuine Greek yoghurt and it's very good
What to buy in Lidl – and what to avoid

Agree. It's all healthy (unless you're buying one with added flavour/sugar).

Personally I get the Fage one but I don't think there's a huge difference compared to Sainsburys own brand or Yeo etc - either in terms of taste or nutrition.

WhereAreWeNow · 06/06/2025 10:29

What is it you're looking for when you say 'healthy' @MonkeyTennis34 ?@MonkeyTennis34 ? Low fat? High protein? High calcium? Live cultures? I think healthy means different things to different people.

fage 5% - the 0% is minging. Fat is not the enemy. However it’s very expensive - Tesco Finest is a close dupe and cheaper.

Lidl also do a 5% Greek yoghurt

You should choose Greek yoghurt as opposed to Greek style ( not Greek yoghurt ). Fage is the best.

stealthninjamum · 06/06/2025 10:33

It depends what you mean by healthy. I’ve swapped from Greek yogurts to kefir to improve my gut health. At first I preferred Greek yogurt (kefir is runnier and doesn’t taste as good) but now I’m used to it I love it and will add it to casseroles, curries, porridge as well as add it to a load of fruit and nuts for breakfast or a snack.

But why do you say this?

UnaOfStormhold · 06/06/2025 10:40

I think for health reasons you want live cultures and no added thickeners (these can be added to to some greek-style yoghurts, though not the yeo valley type). Greek vs Greek style is about country of origin as much as lack of additives - Grerk yoghurt definitely doesn't have thickeners but some Greek style is made in exactly the same way as the original so it's a question of checking the ingredients. Personally I like Yeo valley greek style yoghurt with kefir mixed for exrra bacterial diversity - tastes great.

'Greek style' is not necessarily 'bad', depending on your definition of bad.

Tim's Greek Style for example is excellent and delicious.

And Tim's Dairy is run by the Greek Timotheou family.

countrygirl99 · 06/06/2025 10:46

I usually buy the Lancashire Farm. I occasionally buy Fage if it's on offer but can't say I think the difference is worth it at the usual price it's just very slightly creamier tasting. Lancashire Farm is on offer in Sainsbury's at the moment £2.50. No added ingredients. Agree that it needs to be full fat, 0% is disgusting.

BangersAndGnash · 06/06/2025 10:52

This 'avoid Greek Style' stuff is just dogmatic cant.

IMO.

There is Geek Yog - imported from Greece, such as Fage, and other brands if you have a Geek shop near you. And includes horrid abominations (IMO) such as 0% fat.

There is Greek Style Yog that covers a range of stuff - sloppy supermarket bands to Tim's Dairy (SO creamy and a good product - no additives etc) which is made by a Geek family business, Aldi and Lidl which are good and thick but IMO not as creamy as Lancashire Farm - which is thick, no added ingredients, bio-live and half the price / quarter of travel miles of imported Fage.

Read the label, decide what your priority and objective is and use what you enjoy and suits your budget..

Same. I don’t buy any Lidl yoghurt. I don’t understand why they don’t have any with live cultures. Aldi does the Greek with them, both low fat and a higher fat one IIRC.

Fage definitely. Not the cheapest but the best,

MonkeyTennis34 · 06/06/2025 11:32

Thanks all.
I’m going to seek out the Aldi and Tesco versions!
Regarding what element of “healthy” I’m looking for…I honestly don’t have one particular element in mind.
I’ve recently made a decision to cut down on UPFs as I was eating far too much milk chocolate, shop bought cakes, biscuits, rubbish.
Trying to eat more cleanly I guess.
I’m 55, not overweight, menopausal.
I’ve also started Pilates and hiking on the treadmill so I’m aiming for a complete reboot of my nutrition and physical health.

Anything 0% fat is ultra high processed food as they have to do stuff to get the natural fat out.

MauraLabingi · 06/06/2025 11:47

Greek yoghurt and greek style yoghurt are generally not UPFs OP. Any supermarket or branded one is probably fine - just look at the ingredients list. If it just says "yoghurt", or if it doesn't have an ingredients list at all, it's not a UPF.

Greek style just means it's the same method of making it but it's not actually made in Greece! It's not less healthy because the Italians made it!

ConnieHeart · 06/06/2025 11:52

Yeah, nowt wrong with Greek style. I always buy Lidl. Half the price of proper Greek yogurt. Just never fat free or low fat!

mindutopia · 06/06/2025 12:03

Always buy the full fat fage. Lately been buying more skyr or kvarg for a bit of variety. Have it with fruit and raw nuts most mornings.

Why is Yeo Valley Greek Style yoghurt not as healthy as you thought? Too many calories? Too much fat? It has nothing added looking on their website.
