How do you cook your gammon?

DS has requested a gammon roast today, he’s knee deep in exams so I’m happy to oblige.

I don’t know how to cook a gammon though or what to serve it with really, I was thinking mash and veggies. I’m off to the shops when they open so can buy whatever’s needed.

Can anyone help please?

boil in coke
then roast with honey/mustard

mash, greens, swede and carrott

Coffeeishot · 25/05/2025 08:23

I just roast mine in the oven and serve it with roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese, I don't like it to sweet so I never put honey over it.

ExtensiveDebating · 25/05/2025 08:23

Soak for a couple of hours to remove salt, slow cook in fresh water with a bayleaf, some onion pieces and some black pepper for a few hours, then glaze with a mixture of redcurrant jelly and Dijon mustard putting it back into a hot oven for 20 mins to half an hour. Serve with mash, green veg, gravy if you want it, more mustard.

i like the sound of having it with cauliflower cheese
i think i might have to buy a ham and some cauliflower today!

You are welcome 😀

Yes cauliflower cheese would be ok, you wouldn't need gravy then. I don't think cauli cheese works with roasts generally but it's ok with gammon.

Coffeeishot · 25/05/2025 08:28

I never know which gravy would go with gammon so never have it.

ExtensiveDebating · 25/05/2025 08:29

One of my DCs likes gravy with gammon but I wouldn't bother personally either, I just like more Dijon mustard with mine.

Coffeeishot · 25/05/2025 08:29

I sometimes do buttered spinach with mine dh doesn't like it but it's delicious

Meadowfinch · 25/05/2025 08:31

Low simmer in water, twice to get rid of the salt, then bake with star anise and maple syrup.

Or simmer in a slow cooker with 100ml of apple juice or cider. This is less sweet, lighter and lovely with summer salads

Koazy · 25/05/2025 08:31

I like the idea of boiling in Coke, but think DH would find it too sweet. Cauliflower cheese has been added to my shopping list. Thank you

Yes, I had it cooked in coke once at a friend's house and it was far too sweet for me, I prefer it cooked savoury. My redcurrant jelly glaze adds a tiny bit of sweetness at the end but that's enough for me.

RatOfTheHighway · 25/05/2025 08:36

Not a fan of cooking it in coke, too sweet for me!
I like just putting it in the slow cooker with a few inches of water and cooking until it starts to fall apart. Then I sometimes oven cook it but more often than not I don’t bother and we just have it shredded.

I do mine just like this but I’d ask DS what sides he's thinking of. If he’s expecting Roast Potatoes or Mash Smile

This method from the Hairy Bikers is fairly straightforward too.

Honey-glazed gammon recipe

Of all our gammon recipes, this one is your favourite festive classic. The Hairy Bikers know this gammon joint is a must-have for a Christmas party!

Nigellas recipe in coke, it isn’t sweet. https://www.nigella.com/recipes/ham-in-coca-cola

Then just serve it has ham, egg and chips! Alternatively if you’re wanting a roast type meal then roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, mixed green veg (leeks, peas, cavalo nero).

Gravy only goes with gammon when it’s part of a traditional turkey roast imo.

Ham in Coca Cola

Only those who have never tried this raise an eyebrow at the idea. Don't hesitate, don't be anxious: this really works. No one who cooks it, cooks it just once: it always earns a place in every repertoire.

I leave it in water overnight. Then refresh the water and boil it. Put a carrot in with the water (read this somewhere). Then roast in oven .

I serve with jacket potato, cheese sauce, chutney, cauliflower cheese, macaroni cheese, salad, pineapple, chunky chips, roast potatoes, (not all at once).

EleanorReally · 25/05/2025 08:41

i used to make it with parsley sauce and peas which is nice

Icequeen01 · 25/05/2025 08:43

I always cook my gammon in lager (a recipe I got from my late MIL). Place gammon in a roasting tin. Smear a little butter over the top. Then sprinkle on some Demerara sugar. Pour a small bottle of lager over the gammon (I use one of the small Stella bottles) and then cover in foil and put in the oven. From time to time baste the gammon again with the lager. Once cooked I use some of the lager mixture in the gravy (I usually use an oxo cube and thicken with a bit of bisto). I always serve mine with cauliflower cheese too. It’s also sooo delicious cold.

EleanorReally · 25/05/2025 08:44

at christmas i stud it with cloves and use treacle and mustard

Copperoliverbear · 25/05/2025 08:44

Boil then roast, with mash carrots and peas pudding.

HappiestSleeping · 25/05/2025 08:45

Plus one for coke. I cook it in the slow cooker with coke, and it isn't too sweet.

Hi
I bought a taste the difference gammon from Sainsbury’s 1.3 kg
I have a fan oven
I covered it in foil
the instructions said 2 hours on 180 degrees.
the juices seems to run clear and it was steaming I don’t have an actual thermometer. However I think I may have had the oven on 150 degrees and after an hour I may have opened the cooker a few times now I’m scared, it seemed ok but worried we may have bacteria or parasites !

This is a guide only. Oven cook from chilled 200°C / Fan 180°C / Gas Mark 6 2 hrs
Warnings:
This product is not suitable for rare cooking.
Do not undercook raw meat. Keep raw meat separate from cooked foods.
Use separate kitchen utensils and surfaces for raw meat and cooked foods or wash them thoroughly between use.
Wash hands after handling raw meat.
Raw meat may contain organisms hazardous to health.
Cook thoroughly until piping hot throughout and the juices run clear.

Ineffable23 · 25/12/2025 22:48

I think it will still be fine. 2 hours is a long time for a small ish ham of 1.3kg.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 25/12/2025 22:51

I simmer mine in 60/40 water/apple juice for about an hour and a half, with a couple of whole small dried chillies, a clove of garlic, some peppercorns and a few juniper berries. If I have any bay leaves, one of them goes in as well. Sometimes I use either mango or pineapple juice instead of apple.

Then it gets baked in the oven, usually for about 40 minutes or longer depending on size. I usually baste with honey & wholegrain mustard but one year I'd run out of both and used mango chutney instead. Was lovely.

Run30 · 25/12/2025 22:55

Roast it in the oven
Then take the rind off, paste it with Dijon and tip over demerara
Roast again for 15/20 mins

Serve with:
mashed potato
cauliflower cheese
fine green beans
Cumberland sauce
