Vegetarian roast dinner advice please

Advise please. I'm having my son's new girlfriend round for dinner on Sunday. She's a vegetarian. I was going to do a roast beef before I invited her. Now I think cook that for everyone else and add a nut roast for my son's gf? And vegetables etc? She likes a nut roast she says. I asked her. Thanks all. I have literally never cooked a vegetarian roast dinner before

My veggie best mate loves a nut roast. Another option is veggie sausages - the Richmond ones are lovely.

I like a nut roast but or some of the little vegetarian cheesy things from the freezer section of Waitrose, I also like cauliflower cheese with all the usual roast side veg. I’d avoid the fake meats unless you know she likes them, as many vegetarians don’t.

As a veggie I’m always perfectly happy with cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes & veg, but if someone went to the effort of doing nut roast I’d be thrilled!
Asda do beef or chicken flavour gravy granules that are both vegan and gluten free that are tasty, if you are wanting a gravy too.

As a veggie I would politely eat this and say nothing, but inside I would feel hard done by that no alternative to the main feature like a nut roast was offered. You can buy nut roasts lots of places.

As a vegetarian I would be gutted to be served a tofu salad when everyone else is having a roast dinner

So as long as it’s roasted it’s good? Ok..

Just to say, I made the Bosh nut roast that was mentioned upthread on Sunday, and it was absolutely delicious.

Haha! Like I said or should've said I really haven't a clue! So would just serving vegetables be OK then? It's my first proper time meeting her. Well apart from fleetingly!

Haha! Would you be happy to be served only veg???!!! Like someone hasn't even bothered.

Deathraystare · 22/04/2025 09:28

When I had Christmas with my family I had to buy what I wanted to eat (mainly veggie sausages). I had to cook them ahead of time and then microwave them in some gravy when the meat was being dished up.

I don't eat meat and I wouldn't be happy with only vegetables. For me to be satisfied I need protein. You could buy a nice nut roast from waitrose or M and S. There are also plenty of very easy recipes if you Google.

I would make a nut roast for everyone -keeps it’s simple - serve with gravy and standard veg would be fine. And is more welcoming than having a special done for you

delia smith has a recipe - as do many other cooks

More a case of 'othering' I think. Perpetuating the myth that anyone who's vegetarian has to eat leaves and nothing else. You want to be part of the event, which is a roast. Not to be served something completely different that makes you stand out hugely. I imagine this could be even more of an issue for someone who's 17 and in their boyfriend's parents house for the first time.

Not any kind of fake meat. And ye gods no fake sausages, Linda Maccartney especially. Quorn gives quite a few people (me included) horrible stomach upsets, tates and feels most peculiar, and also is - if you bother about such things - ultra processed.

I totally get the thing about being included, however. Cauliflower cheese, if nicely cooked, is good. So are roast potatoes in olive oil (use your preferred method) . Realistically, that is probably all you need, plus veg of course. You could include a luxurious bean dish to up the protein, if (fashionably) that really matters, and serve toasted nuts to nibble. Lots here: https://www.loveandlemons.com/bean-recipes/

Nut roasts can actually be jolly good, as well.

Here are some recipes - yes, from The Guardian, but if not there, where:

To makes things simpler, here is Felictiy Cloake's comparison website and preferred recipe:

Here is another very straightforward but no-fake -meats recipe:

In the longer term, I'd suggest discussing - for example - some of Dr Rupy's v healthy vegetarian dishes ( several others similar sites are available), to find out what she likes: www.thedoctorskitchen.com/search.php?q=&sort_by=relevance&diets%5B%5D=3

Sliced nut roast with a jug of tomato sauce

Nut roast

Bake a satisfying vegetarian loaf with lentils, chestnut mushrooms and cheese to go with all the classic roast dinner trimmings.
