Bubble tea and Dubai chocolate seem to be the in thing at the moment, or at least it is in the UK. Bubble tea has been around much longer in places like Hong Kong.

Pistachio flavoured everything is very last year, but I prefer pistachio in their natural form.

Not bothered about salted caramel.

Going back to the late 90s I realise now that goat's cheese is rank, but I still like sundried tomato paste in things like lasagne or bolognese sauce.

Avocado on sourdough toast is lovely. But apparently it's why i don't own a house.

TheLadyIsAVamp · 14/03/2025 00:38

The whole bowl trend. I think it started as a vegan thing but they've become my favourite meals. Taco/fajita bowls, tandoori bowls; Korean bowls, greek, Turkish, Thai. So many options but it's basically just a balanced bowl of veg, carbs and protein. I lost a significant amount of weight eating that way so I maybe have a soft spot for them, ditto soup jars.

BeaAndBen · 14/03/2025 04:17

Hot goats cheese salads - or chèvre chaud when on holiday. I still have it for lunch a couple of times a month but it’s apparently very 90s.

Mushroom stroganoff. Used to be ubiquitous as a restaurant vegetarian option and it’s still delicious.

Garlic mushrooms as a starter.

Pavlovas and tiramisu. Viennetta.

Sun dried tomatoes, balsamic reductions and beetroot bloody everything can stay in the unlamented past, though.

Octavia64 · 14/03/2025 04:19

I love goats cheese. It is very 90s though.

I hope bubble tea stays around I really like it.

Hate salted caramel.

storminabuttercup · 14/03/2025 07:27

Loaded fries. Is that a trend? I love them

xsquared · 14/03/2025 07:49

@TheLadyIsAVamp What a great tip.

@BeaAndBen @Octavia64 The first time I encountered goat's cheese was in the late 90s, when my Swiss housemate had it toasted, amd I remember the entire house absolutely reeking!

@TheLadyIsAVamp
And a poke bowl ! Only had it once, in Florence, & wondered why it was not on a plate.
I spent 3 days in Hawaii, & never saw it .
And Singapore noodles are not seen in Singapore.

I digress. I was glad to see the back of nouvelle cuisine, my dentist advises against all caramels, I don't like anything on my chips that makes them soggy, I dislike all tea .
I'm fond of goats cheese, prawn cocktails, & all forms of offal. * *

Goats cheese is a food of the gods and I will fight to the death to defend it 😂

Watercress and rocket in every single salad - I liked that one very much. Even better with baby leaf spinach added.
Seared tuna - still delicious, but it really needs to be very good quality, otherwise it becomes shoe leather alarmingly quickly (side eye at local gastro pub). It’s my favourite summer meal.

Sweet chilli everything - that was an annoying phase.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 14/03/2025 10:50

Not a food item but reading whatever it is described as “pan fried” makes me want to scream.
How on earth else can you fry something ffs?
Plonking a bit of mint or pea shoots etc on top of stuff pisses me off too. It is just slightly updated parsley plonking from the Fanny Craddock era. Poncey then and still poncey now.
Fed up with bloody halloumi fries. Tastelessness in batter - no thanks.
In fact I can’t think of any trends in food I like at all tbh.

festivemouse · 14/03/2025 11:03

@Somethingthecatdraggedin7 so many frying possibilities! Stir fry? Deep fat fry? Shallow fry?

I love bubble tea, I hope that sticks around! Also love bowls, I eat for so many teas and yes they’re great for losing weight.

My current fave is salt and chilli, I love it - I hope it never goes away!

Liveafr · 14/03/2025 11:30

I got into homemade fermented food 10 years ago and still love it!

BigDahliaFan · 14/03/2025 11:34

@BeaAndBen I love goats cheese and happily have it at home grilled with vegetables. Baked Feta as well - though that is apparently old hat now.

I like a breaded brie triangle too - though never really liked it with sweet jam.

Don't get bubble tea - first had it about 15 years ago and really just no.

Love a beetroot in all its forms.

Salted caramel - just really like it.

Sweet potato fries - floppy sweet deep fried stuff. Whereas a chip is a thing of beauty.

BarnacleBeasley · 14/03/2025 11:41

I don't think salted caramel is actually a fad. I think it's one of these things that we've always had in British cooking, except that it's called 'butterscotch' and only associated with angel delight out of a packet. My totally spurious historical reasoning for this (based on the fact that my granny couldn't cook) is that it's something to do with rationing. Then it got reimported from France and everyone thought it was new and exciting, and it was renamed a direct translation of the French name. Same goes for creme brulee, which is in my National Trust traditional recipe book as 'burnt cream' and apparently was a thing here before the 70s.

Salted caramel being in everything is faddy though?

Why "salted caramel" and not just regular caramel?

The other thing that seems to be everywherw is Biscoff/Lotus/Speculoo biscuits.

They have been around for absolutely ages, but many food items now seem to have a Biscoff version of it, be it chocolate, spread, cake etc,.

Viennetta

😱😱😱 Blasphemy
Viennetta was never a fad. It was always iconic

Jasmin71 · 14/03/2025 12:32

Not serving food on proper plates. I wany my plates back.

murasaki · 14/03/2025 12:54

Jay Raynor once wrote a wonderful rant about a restaurant that served his bread rolls in a flat cap.

beguilingeyes · 14/03/2025 13:03

Salted Caramel is not butterscotch. It has salt in it...hence the name. Salted caramel ice cream can be made by adding a touch of soy sauce to vanilla ice cream (true).
I'm completely over pulled pork now. Done to death.

marylou25 · 14/03/2025 13:07

Raspberry coulis on every damn dessert you order whether it goes with it or not! Equally as bad if not worse pesto drizzled artistically (not) around the plate of every savoury dish, even got it on a roast turkey and ham dinner once, it does not go with everything!

Forgottenmyphone · 14/03/2025 15:45

I love Skyr and think it's far superior to Greek yogurt (it's thicker and less tangy) so glad that it seems to be standing the test of time.
I also like halloumi fries and kombucha (not together!)

Hoplolly · 15/03/2025 08:39

Butterscotch is not the same as salted caramel though? They're different. But yeah, a real fad. I get bored of EVERYTHING being "salted caramel" but I do like it.

About 15 years ago the fad was red velvet, and I do love red velvet, a lot.

Right now I am enjoying the fad that is pistachio everything because pistachio is chefs kiss

NeartoNewquay · 15/03/2025 08:44

I hate salted frigging caramel as much as I hate salted frigging chocolate.

Salt is for crisps and chips, jacket potatoes and mash! It is not for chocolate or caramel.

Dustyblue · 19/03/2025 01:54

I actually came to this thread looking for mushroom recipes and here I am.

Salted caramel/chocolate.... meh, salt is a seasoning like any other. Sometimes it works. Like putting suger in tomato-based sauces.

Don't start me on dalgona. The korean candy from that stupid nasty squid game show. My ex bought DS a Squid Game happy meal from McDonalds complete with dalgona.

I am now an expert. It's just honeycomb- melt white sugar until just light brown, add tiny pinch of bicarb/baking powder till it foams, pour onto tray, press down. Cut with a shape, leave to cool. For Korean authenticity, you MUST do this with a metal ladle over the stove & mix with a chopstick.

Many thanks for the vent, I feel better now.

mindutopia · 19/03/2025 12:50

It’s funny, bubble tea is very much my mid 20s. I lived on the stuff. I’m mid 40s now so maybe it’s making a comeback!

Vienetta. Classic, my dc request it for their birthdays and they are 7 & 12.

TwoWildlings · 19/03/2025 12:56

Baked oats or overnight oats. Very filling and loads of variations.
