This is beyond me, I have tried different things, but always end up up with oats everywhere.

A big bowl and very short blasts of heat and stirring in between.
It also helps to mix everything up the night before to soften the oats, then you're just warming it through.

I mix it up in a 500ml Pyrex jug so the splatter just covers the jug and doesn’t coat the inside of the microwave forever more.

I use small Pyrex bowls and make up my oats the night before and then it’s just a case of microwaving for 1 minute, then stir add milk if needed and then microwave again for another minute.

Exactly this. I heat in bursts of a minute and stir in between, though if it’s been soaking overnight, it only needs a minute in total.

I use Flahavans Irish quick oats

It comes with a red scoop

Per serving is 2 scoops oats 4 scoops water or milk I use water only

It microwaves really well even in just a normal bowl that's sort of half a honeydew melon size like mine

But yes use a Pyrex measuring jug if you have one

KittenPause · 04/02/2025 09:50

Oh and microwave for 2 minutes

Alltheprettyseahorses · 04/02/2025 10:07

I always put a plate over the top of the bowl, no splatters then!

hexsnidgett · 04/02/2025 10:14

I tried soaking overnight, but the result was very stodgy.
Maybe I need finer oats?

Bigger bowl is the only thing that helped here.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 04/02/2025 10:15

I prep it the night before if I'm microwaving it - the oats soak up loads of the liquid which seems to stop the splatter, although I do also tend to pop a lid on just in case, but it always seems to come out fine. Add a little bit more liquid if it's a bit too dry after reheating.

twoforwardoneback · 04/02/2025 10:17

The Quaker oat sachets where you tip the oats in a bowl, pour milk into the sachet, pour it into the bowl and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes.

Youcanttakeanelephantonthebus · 04/02/2025 10:18

MAke it with water not milk

SatinHeart · 04/02/2025 10:19

Deeper bowl and keep stopping and stirring.

hexsnidgett · 04/02/2025 11:48

Stopping and stirring is what I did this morning, it still overflowed and took about 15 minutes. It would have been easier in a pan.
I find it hard to fancy cold cereal at 6.30 in the morning, but porridge may have to be reserved to weekends.Sad

If it's overflowing bowl isn't big enough for the quantity you're putting in. But how on earth did it take 15 mins with a microwave, I'd have it made quicker in a saucepan! One of the few times when I'd suggest maybe a slowcooker overnight might work for you

For how many people??? How big is the bowl?

PickAChew · 04/02/2025 11:52

Big bowl, stirring, bring it just about to the boil then use the simmer or defrost setting so the oats cook through. The smaller oats do cook better than jumbo oats.

DUsername · 04/02/2025 11:53

15 minutes!! Were you making enough for the 3 bears?! If the porridge is stodgy then add more liquid. You could try ready brek if you prefer it smooth.

JackieGoodman · 04/02/2025 11:54

Agree big glass bowl, I find it best to use less liquid than needed and adding hot/cold water or milk to the resultant stodge at the end works (as I think its the excess liquid making it boil over).

SunblockSue · 04/02/2025 11:57

For one - half a glass of oats, glass of milk. Normal sized bowl. Microwave for 2 mins or so and let sit for a while to cool a bit so it's an edible temperature plus the oats continue to cook and thicken.

LadyDanburysHat · 04/02/2025 12:00

You could also make porridge in a pan, a large batch and heat up a bowlful in the microwave.

I never actually cook it in the microwave as it doesn't cook properly, unless you soak the oats the night before.

Same, it's not a small bowl I use but it's just a one person bowl not a big glass just or anything.

Oddly though, DH does the same and it goes everywhere.

KittenPause · 04/02/2025 13:33

It makes a massive as to what oats you use if you're microwaving

KittenPause · 04/02/2025 13:34

*difference

Yep, this is what I do. No mess .
