What do you like with your sticky toffee pudding - icecream, custard, cream or something else?

I'm making a HUGE one for large gathering on Christmas Eve... what would you serve with it? At the mo, I'm thinking offering options of pistachio and vanilla icecream and double cream... but wondering if some will feel they are missing out with no custard!! What do you think?

Custard and extra thick cream is what I always serve.

I am finding this thread interesting. My family are coming round after Christmas. We are having Delia’s STPs for dessert. I made then yesterday and they are in the freezer. No matter how much of the toffee sauce I do, they still ask for more sauce. This year I plan to use a whole double cream carton (600mls) to make the sauce. I think adding double cream afterwards would just be too much cream.

Just me for plain yoghurt then?
I like it as it cuts through the sweetness.

Clotted cream, or extra thick double cream 😋

Hot toffee sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream

I love custard, so personally I would feel cheated if it wasn’t available!

verycloakanddaggers · 20/12/2024 18:23

Vanilla ice cream

cantthinkofausername26 · 20/12/2024 18:27

Queen Delia recommends extra thick double cream!

I would definitely offer custard, double cream and ice cream.

Unlike the PP who has ' never ever seen it served with custard', I almost always see custard offered with it in pubs/restaurants, although I do like vanilla ice cream with it personally. When I make it for my family, the DC tend to take all three!!

slightlydistrac · 21/12/2024 10:18

Custard please.

Well I tested it out with a couple of people who I saw last night who will be there - and the first one said Custard!!

So yes, going to serve all three and more: Double cream, Extra thick double cream, custard and ice cream (2 types).. its Christmas Eve and largesse is the name of the game!!

And in response to PP who asked about size of pud - it felt ginormous when I made it in the summer - just the BBC recipe and I made it with double sauce (there is never enough!!!) - and making it the day before as they recommend definitely helps.

So I'm about to get out my largest dishes, and know I'll be making at least 2, possibly 3... double the BBC recipe. What worked in the summer was one large pud about 2 inches thick, served in a dish that was a little bigger but not much so the sauce could ooze into it and around it. Yum!!!!

If you are serving it hot then ice cream and/or cream. Whenever my book club have it we go for ice cream and cream!

I made one to cut up and freeze in squares
Used 8oz dates and a 9" square tin.
Rookie error didn't put paper in it ( these tins don;t stick but decided that the STP would call me a liar )

It is delicious , though it's not an attractive raw mix is it ?

DH and DD had custard , I had ice cream .
Some of the Carnation Drizzle on the top . Delicious .

Yes, for big group of 16 icecream was most popular with the young, and the older generation went for custard or cream... Lots of everything was consumed! O xx

Frozen Creme fraiche x

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/12/2024 09:45

Single cream, lots of it. The pudding is very rich and sweet, so I don't want more sweetness with it.
