What do you like with your sticky toffee pudding - icecream, custard, cream or something else?

I'm making a HUGE one for large gathering on Christmas Eve... what would you serve with it? At the mo, I'm thinking offering options of pistachio and vanilla icecream and double cream... but wondering if some will feel they are missing out with no custard!! What do you think?

Personally I'd always have vanilla ice cream, failing that I'd have double cream. If those weren't available I'd have it plain.

I love ice cream with stp - the contrast between hot and cold is lovely. Have never ever seen it served with custard.

Aussiegold · 20/12/2024 10:21

I have been known to add vanilla ice cream topped with Baileys.......

PlatinumBrunette · 20/12/2024 10:24

More sticky toffee pudding 🤤
And double cream.
and then even more of both!

OverdueForAnEyeTest · 20/12/2024 10:25

Ice cream would be my first choice then double cream.

Ineffable23 · 20/12/2024 10:27

Ice cream and if not that then double cream. Or (and this is probably anathema to most people), I like that fresh custard you get, but cold instead of hot. I can happily eat that cold out the tub on its own.

Double cream. Have some vanilla ice cream in case anyone wants it although it would be a bit sweet for me.

stopringingme · 20/12/2024 10:32

Double cream or custard

DailyCake · 20/12/2024 10:47

Plain vanilla ice cream or double cream.

catin8oots · 20/12/2024 10:59

In the pub I used to work with in it was offered with either vanilla ice cream, cream or custard. I would say it was a pretty even split what was ordered. Older men tend to go for custard though, older women for double cream and younger people go for ice cream.

This is obviously very scientific evidence 😀

For me it has to be custard with sticky toffee. Ice cream is for chocolate fudge cake. I don't know why but any other combination feels wrong to me.

marylou25 · 20/12/2024 11:57

I presume all these options are in addition to the toffee/caramel sauce? Assuming so then I like ice cream for the contrast with hot and cold. Never seen it served with custard!

ApolloandDaphne · 20/12/2024 12:11

Cream, ice cream or cold custard.

No help what so ever but please elaborate on the "HUGE" Xmas Grin
I do mine in little pudding basins ( John Tovey recipe that he kindly supplied to Delia - makes 8) but I really fancy doing a large rectangular beast of a pudding .
(6oz dates /2 eggs quantity ) no pecans though , no-one likes them

How big a pudding are you doing and what are you baking it in?

TIA

Ice cream here , maybe even Salted Caramel ice cream?

Moveoverdarlin · 20/12/2024 17:37

If I was hosting, I’d buy all three - custard, cream and ice-cream.

I went out with three friends last night. We all had STP, and we all had different accompaniments.

Quacksalver · 20/12/2024 17:37

Creme fraiche goes nicely with it, I find

poetryandwine · 20/12/2024 17:38

Cream for mine, please

toastofthetown · 20/12/2024 17:40

Custard by a significant margin! If there were no custard, I would decline cream or ice cream with it (and be privately sad about the lack of custard). Pistachio ice cream seems an odd choice with STP. I love pistachio ice cream and love STP but I don't want them in the same bowl.

Cattery · 20/12/2024 17:40

Gin

Ponderingwindow · 20/12/2024 17:45

Vanilla ice cream. The good stuff, not frozen dessert masquerading as ice cream.

tinydynamine · 20/12/2024 17:49

Ever tried it, but feel sure a big blob of crème fraiche would be the perfect foil for an overly sweet dessert like that.

Scutterbug · 20/12/2024 17:49

Custard AND cream 😂

KittenPause · 20/12/2024 17:52

Vanilla ice cream

I love the ice cream against the hot pudding

KohlaParasaurus · 20/12/2024 17:54

Custard. I like hot things to be hot. A small splodge of thick cream if there's no custard. Never ice cream.

Smittenkitchen · 20/12/2024 17:55

Double cream 😍
