If you were going to a Christmas Eve lunch/drinks...

At someone's house, and heading to the pub for drinks after, what would you want to eat?

I was originally doing drinks and nibbles plus mince pies but I think something more substantial might be required as everyone is going to be out drinking later in the day.

My thoughts so far are...

Quiche
A "massive" Christmassy salad
Crusty bread
Cheese/pate?

Any other ideas what you'd fancy?

Sausage rolls, always.

I def think "lunch" sets an expectation of a meal-especially if you will be drinking.

How many ppl and are they all adults`?

edited to admit to finding quiche and salad a bit limp

Louisetheroux · 17/12/2024 17:09

Mini Fray Bentos pies

Popolinar · 17/12/2024 17:11

Home made lentil soup with crusty bread
Baked potatoes with various fillings
Cold pasta dishes, meat platter, cheese platter, various breads, festive sausage rolls, quiche or pizza bites
Crisps, nuts etc.

Any of the above would be quite substantial.

GroovyChick87 · 17/12/2024 17:12

I wouldn't want a heavy stomach with drinks, so something light I could pick at. A few sandwiches and salad.

JimHalpertsWife · 17/12/2024 17:13

Pate and a good cheese, crackers and chutney
Sausage rolls and scotch eggs (big fans in our house)
Pigs in blankets with grvay for dipping
Crusty bread and butter
A token salad that everyone will side eye

LovePoppy · 17/12/2024 17:15

What type of salad is Christmas-y?

LegoHouse274 · 17/12/2024 17:21

Honestly I'd be happy with cheeseboard and crackers and you could buy in sandwich platters, or just repeatedly bung loads of frozen pizzas, garlic breads and chips in the oven. I doubt anyone will particularly care, enjoy your get together!

What type of salad is Christmas-y?

I've seen some lovely looking ones online with roasted veg/nuts/mixed leaves/pomegranate etc...very colourful with lots of red and green

I'll add sausage rolls to the list...or might go mad and make some

Sausage rolls, pizza, pigs in blanket, crisps

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2024 17:55

Quiche and salad sounds perfect, so long as the quiche is served hot. Crusty bread, maybe some coleslaw. Perfect. And hell yes to (veggie!) sausage rolls!

BeaLola · 17/12/2024 17:58

Definitely sausage rolls
Happy with quiche especially if warm and cheese/pâté with French stick

Re salad - I love salads but if I'm at a drinks thing and having to stand and circulate I never choose it as I end up spilling it /it's difficult to eat easily when standing or moving bc about

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/12/2024 18:09

Assuming these are your friends or relatives, why not ask them? There’s no point putting on a load of stodge if people just want to pick at something light, or going to loads of effort if everyone’s just expecting soup and a sandwich. I wouldn’t want a heavy lunch and then heading out for drinks feeling full and dozy, a lot of people just prefer to eat light and order some bits at the pub when they’re drunk and peckish later on.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 17/12/2024 19:06

How many are you catering for? I'd go for lots of honey and mustard cocktail sausages (warm). Some baked cheeses (Brie/Camembert) with fresh baguette or dough sticks for dipping, pate, pickles, cold meats, homemade winter slaw.

flubuggy · 17/12/2024 19:23

I love the idea of baked Camembert but we've got people popping in at slightly different times....but, you snooze you lose I guess 😂

fuck salad

JC03745 · 17/12/2024 19:27

I assume this will be more a canape, snacking thing rather than a sit down meal before going out?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 17/12/2024 19:48

Salad is not Christmas Eve, nor lentil soup!

I'd do a ham and cheeseboard.

Cosycore · 17/12/2024 19:51

A different mn member did just a buffet of sausage rolls, and this is something I think I’d suggest, can do stuffing rolls, Brie and cranberry whatever. Salad is only ok if sitting down. If mingling and drinking easy finger food all the way

GluggleJuggle · 17/12/2024 20:27

Fish pie or shepherd pie or lasagne or spaghetti bolognaise or curry
Christmas Eve needs to be a decent meal before the pub.

BlackForestCake · 17/12/2024 21:31

Honestly I'd be happy with cheeseboard and crackers

Have you seen the price of cheese? It's not a cheap way to feed a lot of people any more (if it ever was).

BlackForestCake · 17/12/2024 21:32

Also you have the issue of the people who don't like blue cheese or the people who don't like fruity cheese and what do you feed the vegans etc...
