I'm in charge of trifle for Christmas Day. Hit me with your best recipes!

The classic. Trifle sponges. Sherry. Tinned fruit cocktail. Strawberry jelly. Custard. Whipped cream. Hundreds and thousands.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/12/2024 21:02

Traditional is good but I was hoping for something more Christmassy and spectacular looking.

Ginger and pear trifle a bit different.

Ooh yes that would be nice. I'd need to check DD wasn't making her pear and ginger crumble though!

Chocolate orange! Orange jelly set over Jaffa cakes and tinned mandarin segments, chocolate custard, whipped cream, choc orange buttons or segments. Amazing!

MyCatHasStaff · 12/12/2024 21:33

I do these in little individual shot glasses. Madeira cake soaked in amaretti, then a layer of crushed raspberries mixed with a small amount of ground almonds, a layer of custard, a layer of soft whipped cream and amaretti and toasted flaked almonds on top.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/12/2024 21:35

Raspberries and amaretti sounds right up my street, Sort of posh Bakewell tart flavours.

I'd love to do a chocolate orange trifle with chocolate custard but my lot insist on something pretty traditional.

Sponge fingers soaked in sherry (unless children are eating it), tinned pears, raspberry jelly, custard, whipped cream, decorated with fresh raspberries, loads of chocolate shavings and toasted flaked almonds.

That sounds like heaven. I am so tempted to say - this is the trifle this year. But they would mew for the 1970s version.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/12/2024 22:17

I'm definitely going to try the amaretto version. It sounds amazing.

Classic Delia recipe. www.deliaonline.com/recipes/books/delias-happy-christmas/traditional-english-trifle

Every year I say I will do something else but overwhelmed by requests for this, only variation is that I use Swiss roll instead of trifle sponge. The combo of sharp raspberries and creamy banana is divine.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/12/2024 04:51

I tried to find a raspberry Swiss roll last year for my trifle and couldn't get one anywhere. I'm not sure about banana in a trifle. Banana belongs in banoffee pie only!

Waitrose for the raspberry Swiss roll.

I thought the banana was weird too until I tried it!

I have no Waitrose anywhere near me.

I’ve resorted to slicing Madelines and sandwiching them back together with raspberry jam when I couldn’t get a Swiss roll.

Loving the sound of the amaretto Bakewell tart flavours!

I’m making this one for Christmas this year. I love cherries!

Sounds amazing
how do you make the chocolate custard? Please say it’s a ready made one!

off to see if I can get gluten free Jaffa cakes… I’m hosting Boxing Day and have 25 people… so looking for something wow! And easy!

AdoraBell · 13/12/2024 10:07

I’ve never made a trifle but I would go for the chocolate orange, or the raspberry snd amaretto suggestion by pp. They both sound delicious.

TheSandgroper · 13/12/2024 13:19

Well, this isn’t classic in my life but someone must think so. https://www.seriouseats.com/history-southern-banana-pudding

Our family trifle is sponge/swiss roll around the bowl with more diced, filling the bottom. Alcohol. Orange or red jelly. Allow to set. Add fruit. Peaches are in season now here. Red or orange jelly (the opposite colour). Sometimes port wine jelly. Allow to set. A thin layer of custard with flaked almonds to finish.

My grandma’s was swiss roll all around, alcohol, fill with custard and dessicated coconut on top. A white bowl with a green pattern similar to blue willow. I can see it now.

How Banana Pudding Became a Southern Icon

Banana pudding has a strong, genuine Southern identity that stretches back more than half a century. Earlier versions of the dessert go back even further. The real question is not whether it's Southern, but when and how it got that way.

When you say ‘individual shot glasses’ what do you mean?

(imagining trying to get a spoon in a vodka shot glass)

Black Forest trifle is amazing and really simple to make.

Brownie bites, cherries in kirsh with a good slug extra of kirsh to nicely soak the brownie bites, chocolate custard (tinned custard with a bar of dark chocolate melted in,thick cream (use the extra thick with brandy/baileys if feeling very decadent), grated dark chocolate or dusting of coco.
