Do you have dessert after dinner?

And if so what do you usually have?
we only have it on a Sunday after our roast, but after visiting in laws who do it after every meal it’s oddly comforting.

Sorry not every meal! After every tea time

I used to when I was a little girl at home.

But now we don't - the kids often have a yogurt, but pudding is only very occasional for everyone in my household.

To be honest now I'm writing this I don't really know why we don't have it more often! Maybe when the kids are older but they are of a young age where I think they'd refuse to eat any dinner if they knew there was pudding ahoy!

Bonfirenightchaos · 05/11/2024 11:23

No because I don’t think we need it everyday (sadly!) but if we do then it would be at the weekend. Kids just get fruit or Greek yoghurt if they want anything after dinner.

chattyness · 05/11/2024 11:24

Sometimes, it depends on how much we ate for dinner, like you I mostly do a pudding with custard like syrup sponge or apple crumble or something like cheesecake with ice cream just after Sunday dinner, but through the week we don't bother much, maybe a bit of fresh fruit, or some biscuits, piece of cake if we've got any etc DH likes those mini trifles,or a tin of rice pud.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/11/2024 11:25

No, would get fat!

FrequentlyAskedQuestion · 05/11/2024 11:26

Never for ordinary meals.

Yes if I am entertaining.

We did when I was a child.

Chypre · 05/11/2024 11:28

Only on weekends, when it is a slower paced and bigger "occasion" of a dinner. On weekdays I feel everyone is tired enough, might grab a fruit or a piece of chocolate on the way out, but that's it.

Cornecopia · 05/11/2024 11:28

My kids have yoghurt or fruit etc in the week. But in laws after every meal has trifle, Eton mess, sponges custard etc. I remember my grand parents doing it too it seems to be dying out.

Only if entertaining but I don't have a sweet tooth so I'm not really fussed.

yukikata · 05/11/2024 11:29

Sometimes a square or two of dark chocolate in the evening, but we would never do a proper pudding unless we had guests.

I wonder if this is partly with our lives becoming more sedentary.

If I ate like that every day, I would put on a lot of weight.

Yes me too! After the visit I’ve been on salads the last 2 days 😂

Never, I don’t really like them. I will make something if people are coming over for a full three-course meal, but I don’t see the need for it everyday, especially after dinner which is usually our biggest meal!

poetryandwine · 05/11/2024 12:31

Three or four times a week we like a proper three course meal, with pudding. It can be as simple as a good piece of fruit or cheese and biscuits, or poached fruit with a digestive biscuit. And we adore good chocolate. I bake some, more so on weekends, or we go out.

The other days we eat simply, a combination of time constraints and health considerations. No pudding then

I think it's also because portions were smaller and people didn't snack, at least not as much.

mindutopia · 05/11/2024 12:48

We have it a few times a week. It used to be only after a roast or other special dinner, but lately I feel like we need a bit more joy in life, so we might maybe 3-4 dinners a week.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/11/2024 12:52

Not often, although I've just had a yoghurt after my lunch. It was a Longley Farm hazelnut one, and I couldn't stop thinking about it sitting in the fridge.

JBJ · 05/11/2024 12:52

Rarely. I do if I've got guests, but usually it's just 18yo Ds and I, so well sometimes have a bit of fruit or a yoghurt after dinner, but very rarely a pudding, unless it's a hot day and we've got ice lollies!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/11/2024 12:55

No. It’s an orange but that’s for vitamin C.

If I do have a dessert it’s shop bought apple strudel or shop bought cheesecake or shop bought bread and butter pudding.

My DM makes a nice apple pie and I can do apple with rhubarb or not crumble and make a cheesecake from scratch.

Oooo this sounds amazing, can I ask what kind of meals you cook in your 3 courses

Never during the week, and that's not because we don't want to , it's for health reasons. If anyone is hungry again later on we would usually have some cereal, fruit or Greek yogurt. At weekends we either have a takeaway or eat out. If eating out we tend to have a dessert, with a takeaway it would depend on how full we are or where it's from (for example we love the Dominoes cookies). We try and eat healthy all week and then relax and have whatever we want for put 2 'treat' meals at weekends.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/11/2024 15:04

No im more of a crisps and dips before on a Sunday kind of person. Husband loves puddings like crumble, Sticky toffee etc so he'll have that with custard or ice cream. The kids have yogurt or fruit in the week, ice cream at weekends.

poetryandwine · 05/11/2024 15:11

You are very kind, OP.

Puddings are usually simple, as above or a simple sponge with poached fruit, except for special occasions.

We love fish and seafood, whole, filleted or in soups and stews at the weekend. Marinading and grilling, baking or sauteeing fillets or a whole fish, or prawns or scallops, is quick and easy if a bit of a splurge. But we are omnivores and like everything from a great roast to delicious tofu dishes.

My rule of thumb is: a simple main dish needs interesting vegetables and vice versa. (Of course there are exceptions).

We have either a starter, such as soup, pasta or risotto, or a green salad after the main course. Seldom both.

DH and I often have wine with the nice meals, but not always. When we do I often look for a way to use part of the bottle in the cooking. We try to keep to 10–15 units/week.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 05/11/2024 15:21

Yes we do usually but we shouldn’t.

poetryandwine · 05/11/2024 15:24
