The totally foolproof, quick to make dessert...

... please tell me it does exist.

My track record for any kind of cooking is honestly the pits. I've committed to bringing something for dessert for an upcoming, small dinner with friends and would welcome suggestions please?

Either something super super simple but elegant, or even something I can shop-buy and then spruce up a bit for serving.

Complicated by the fact that at least two of the other guests are extremely competent, confident cooks (but they rarely think about dessert and I'm the one with the sweet tooth hence the offer to contribute!)

TIA!

Most people hate puddings unless they're really well executed.

Or really simple.__

Evidence?

Even easier Lemon Posset, no cooking

Can of condensed milk
150 ml double cream
150 ml lemon juice

Thoroughly combine the condensed milk and the cream. Add the lemon juice and beat with a balloon whisk (you can use a fork but it will take longer). The mixture magically thickens and if you leave it in a fridge for several hours, or overnight, goes nicely stiff. Serve with lemon zest/crushed ginger nut biscuit on top/in a brandy snap basket with fresh berries/in individual small dishes or one large bowl.

For a less confident and experienced cook, this sounds like a winner to me. Next to no equipment or skill needed. I will save this one!

Ginger nut cream roll
Sandwich ginger nuts together with fresh whipped cream to make a ginger nut caterpillar which you then cover in the rest of the cream and leave in the fridge overnight
When you serve it, cut it on the bias for a sophisticated stripy look

Lemon posset.

600ml double cream
125g caster sugar
juice of 2 lemons

Put the cream and sugar into a pan over a medium heat, stirring all the time so that the sugar dissolves, then allow to boil for 3 minutes. Take off the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Straight away, pour into 6 serving bowls/glasses, and put into the fridge.

Absolutely foolproof, and totally delicious. I usually serve with some shortbread biscuits.

I was also going to suggest lemon posset 😊

Quality vanilla ice cream with liqueur poured over and a chocolate wafer stick.

Baileys, Kaluha etc my favourite is cantaloupe melon liqueur

Another vote for lemon posset

Me too. And once it's set and chilled, I put a small spoonful of blueberry compote on top to help cut through the sweetness.

Bananas - cooked in oven in their skin for about 10-15mn. Just bung them in the oven in a serving dish. The skins go black and the inside goes all caremilsied and soft and delicious.

Serve with a a sharp knife to pierce the skin and a spoon to scoop out the flesh.

Serve with ice cream and some liqueur if you like. Yum.

You can't serve bananas on their own. That's ridiculous.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/11/2024 20:34

It's not ridiculous, but it's not something I'd feel comfortable taking along to somebody else's house and asking if the bananas could be cooked in their oven and the ice cream stored in their freezer till needed.

BIWI · 03/11/2024 20:47

Yes, that's definitely a dessert to be served in your own home

BobbyBiscuits · 03/11/2024 20:53

Banoffee pie? Crushed digestives mixed with melted butter, a couple of tins of ready made carnation caramel, sliced banana, and either whip some cream or use squirty cream. Sprinkle of cinnamon or chocolate on top. No cooking other than melting butter in microwave but you could get away with using room temp soft butter.

Cake mixture into a dish (use a packet mix if you want). Drop desert spoonfuls of jam in blobs on the top ... they will sink. Scatter flaked almonds on top. Cook in oven. Serve with creme fraiche.

Make or buy some shortcrust pastry. Bash it into a flat circle with your fists ... no need to use a rolling pin. Beat up an egg and paint onto the middle of the pastry. Put in sliced cooking apple and sprinkle on some sugar (or use a can of pie filling). Fold up the edges of the pastry into a sort of cow pat. Paint the outside with the rest of the egg and sprinkle on brown sugar. It forms a crispy top layer. Bake in oven and serve with creme fraiche.

Whip up some whipping cream ... with a drop of brandy and a bit of icing sugar. Mix in some halved green grapes and flaked almonds. Put in sundae dishes.

I am an expert on easy cooking as I am so lazy!

Oh dear, that will teach me to read the full OP properly. Obviously this is one for your own home only! But do try it, it's glorious.

I was going to say lemon posset too.

i do cook a lot, but when i first made a posset I couldn’t believe how easy it was.

make sure you taste it to ensure you like the level of lemon juice (I add a lot more than my recipe suggests)

OMGitsnotgood · 08/11/2024 08:36

@mimosa1 love bananas like this too. We split the skins and pack with chocolate buttons then chuck on the BBQ then serve with ice-cream. Lush.

beebee25 · 08/11/2024 17:15

Whip up some double cream with vanilla extract... bash up Crunchies and Maltesers... stir through cream and chill. This can also be made with creme fraiche

Hoppinggreen · 08/11/2024 17:25

Bought chocolate cake, cut into cubes, soak in kirsch
Lay in bottom of dish
Cherry compote (bought)
Whipped double cream and marscapone with some vanilla and icing sugar
Leave for a few hours
Fresh cherries on top and grated chocolate last minute
