Fondue - Vegan Cheese?

Zebedee999 · 19/10/2024 16:34

I'm thinking of laying on a fondue this Christmas as a treat. I have all the gear but "just" need the suitable cheese.

Out of our large group one person is a vegan which means the range of cheese is limited.

Can anyone recommend a vegan cheese SUITABLE FOR FONDUE that I can buy ready made?

Many thanks.

Id be devastated to get a vegan cheese fondue. Why not do an oil one instead? Or at least one real cheese and one vegan.

First off I would check they even like vegan cheese, fair enough if they do. I would t do it for everyone though, have you tried it? It's horrid.

KizzyDora · 19/10/2024 16:39

Don't do it. Vegan cheese fondue is like vomit.

Mittens67 · 19/10/2024 16:40

I would honestly suggest a different option because vegan cheese is awful. I have tried them all and decided I would rather give up cheese than eat that crap.

Words · 19/10/2024 16:41

Oh god no. Vegan cheese is repulsive. Provide something else for the vegan

username3678 · 19/10/2024 16:41

In general vegan cheese is horrific. Could you make the vegan something else?

BobbyBiscuits · 19/10/2024 16:41

Could you do an oil fondue for the vegans? You could have seasoned veg/ meat substitute. Anything that cooks quickly in boiling oil. You just need to heat up a bottle of veg oil on the hob, then transfer to metal fondue thing, the heat beneath should keep it hot for the whole time unless you're outdoors.
Vegan cheese isn't that great for fondue I don't think.

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 19/10/2024 16:42

Would have agreed, but as with everything, things move on. There is a shamabert one whick melts really nicely and you can make a cashew /cheese sauce one?

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 19/10/2024 16:44

Ps. Would be made up, even if it does not excute perfectly, just for you to have thought of me and gave it a try

CameronStrike · 19/10/2024 16:45

Check out la fauxmagerie, I think they do something suitable for vegan fondue. It's not cheese but what they sell is delicious.

Sorry but that sounds disgusting!

BobbyBiscuits · 19/10/2024 16:48

@CameronStrike it's really common to do a cheese fondue and an oil one. The oil one usually has things like chunks of fillet steak. You stick them in and waiting for it to be ready. It's all part of the fun.

Words · 19/10/2024 16:50

Could you provide some crispy veg and various dips for the vegan?Hummus, soy sauce etc.

Fondue is the food of the gods - don't compromise it!

Words · 19/10/2024 16:52

Yes, the meat I think can be done in separate oil before dipping into the gooey goodness, but I guess that would then be unacceptable to the vegan

Maybe if you eat meat, as fried meat is probably tasty. The description above sounds like chunks of deep fried vegetables or quorn or something and I am sorry but that really sounds revolting.

BobbyBiscuits · 19/10/2024 17:37

@CameronStrike ok well that's a terrible shame. Maybe OP or their guests might not think that?
I personally think dipping bread and veg into a huge bowl of melted cheese is unpleasant. But I'd still serve a fondue for both cheese, meat and vegetarians.

HoppityBun · 19/10/2024 17:42

You could make a creamy white sauce and a tomato sauce to dip into?

eurochick · 19/10/2024 17:45

Vegan cheese goes straight through me. It's vile stuff. I'm lactose intolerant and prefer the after effects of real cheese to that non-food.

That's because being a vegan is not about being you and what is good for you personally. I could eat anything, but sat at table and if it caused you harm, i would choose not to do it

Zebedee999 · 19/10/2024 23:00

Well thanks all for the advice. It's gonna go down like a lead balloon if I do a fondue that doesn't cater for the vegan to be a part of it but I really want to do it.
When I did it abroad once at a restaurant we had a normal fondue with a separate vegan one. I might have to try that.

Thanks to those who suggested vegan "cheese" to try, I will look into them.

Have you ever tasted vegan cheese? I would honestly do a normal one for everyone else and a separate one for them.

Oh good god NO. Vegan cheese is vile beyond belief!

Do a normal fondue and some hummus for the vegan.
