It is quite sour, and tastes somewhat like tamarind. Has anyone experience of using this in cooking please. It's unlikely to taste OK just as a spread, despite its name: is not buttery at all . T I A

What we call apple sauce, I believe, is usually called apple butter in the USA. The ingredients suggest this is the same thing with pumpkin. If you don't like it as a spread or condiment (as we would use apple sauce) you could just use it in baking or desserts as you would a jam.

JayeAshe · 21/09/2024 16:34

Thanks @ForPearlViper , this product is way too sour tasting to work in a dessert though ...

I suppose it could take the place of apple sauce with pork etc 🤔

It is meant to be a spread for bread or biscuits, etc. Most likely it is sweetened and has spices like in a pumpkin pie.

We have both apple sauce and apple butter in the US, and they're likely the same as yours.

OP, I've never heard of pumpkin butter. If it's that sour there may not be much you can do with it. I did find this though:

@MrsMariaReynolds, @MissConductUS , if I were to eat it spread on bread or crackers, my tongue would shrivel up, the product tastes like sour cider apples. So strange...

I might have to put it in a curry sauce.

I experimented with adding some to my porridge this morning. It was ... Not nice 😖

Perhaps you got a bad jar or it's not a good brand.

mynameiscalypso · 21/09/2024 17:07

Based on the ingredients, it should be quite sweet so I also wonder if you have a dodgy jar.

JingsMahBucket · 21/09/2024 17:08

@JayeAshe pumpkin butter shouldn’t be sour. Stop eating it. I think you got a bad jar.

JayeAshe · 21/09/2024 17:09

I have tried US pumpkin pie and pumpkin spiced pancakes (Denny's and IHOP): this product tastes very different 😁

I guess it's a wrong'un 😭

Now wondering if the manufacturer forgot to add the sugar 🤣 !

This is an odd niche product from the same stable as pumpkin spice everything. Use it or don't, if you just don't like it don't ruin everything with it.
Curry and pork are probably the best ideas. If you're truly committed to eating it you could mix it with applesauce for pork?
It's not in a traditional product and pumpkin is notoriously divisive.
Apple butter isn't buttery either, it's named for the thicker texture, similar idea as peanut butter.

trainedopossum · 21/09/2024 17:15

Would sweetening it improve it?

JayeAshe · 21/09/2024 17:22

Thanks, @trainedopossum , I could certainly try 👍

I'm in the US and I'd toss it.

JayeAshe · 21/09/2024 17:45

@petermaddog you cracked it ! The lid says sell by 04/12/24 ... Which was 12 April this year. It was a random gift from someone in USA, it may have been kept a few months too long !

I originally thought it would be OK until December 🤭
