Vegan at a fondue!

Pigletpoglet · 14/09/2024 18:47

Have planned and prepped a fancy fondue for tomorrow night - with fruit and veg, pickles and chutneys etc etc. Now have a random extra vegan - any ideas for a dish I can offer that they can eat with bread and all the fondue trimmings? NOT doing vegan fondue as vegan cheese is actually vomitous.

Maybe a kind of ratatouille they could dip bread into? Or even a kind of Dahl?

Abeautifulcontradiction · 14/09/2024 18:59

Could you make this vegan Camembert recipe? It's made from cashews and nutritional yeast so none of the vegan cheese alternatives but could still work as something to dip the extras in.

For a very late (rude) addition, I'd just leave it at it is.

Or perhaps get a small slab of vomitous chemical mixture for them alone.

Iheartmysmart · 14/09/2024 19:07

I used to make DS a vegan American style nacho cheese which would probably work as it was quite runny. It actually tasted okay as well.

Ineffable23 · 14/09/2024 19:09

The ratatouille idea sounds like a good option - fondue people may end up eating a bit as well and leftovers reheat for you to eat if there's an excess.

Loooooo · 14/09/2024 19:10

I’d get some hummus too

This.

I'd say 'it's a fondue so apart from the bread, there's not alot you can eat. Are you sure you want to come?!

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/09/2024 19:17

A lot depends on why!

Overthebow · 14/09/2024 19:21

I’d do a selection of dips other than the cheese, which everyone might like, so put out a bowl of humous, aubergine dip and the ratatouille idea is a good one

kitsuneghost · 14/09/2024 19:28

Just stick a few vegan oven stuff on (veg bhaji, samosa etc...) and some olives and nuts and they can pick from them. Guaranteed they are not expecting you to go out your way for them. My vegan friends bring their own snacks and milk with them, even if just coming for a quick daytime visit.

AcrossTheOceanMissingHome · 14/09/2024 19:33

I'd do a thick cauliflower and squash soup.

Oh I used to do a yummy chargrilled aubergine dip/variation on Baba ganoush that was very easy and can be relatively easily veganified:

Might be too annoying to make for a surprise guest though!

Burnt eggplant and yogurt dip Ottolenghi | Something New For Dinner

Ottolenghi's delicious variation on baba ghanoush. Burnt eggplant, greek yogurt, lemon juice and a splash of pomegranate molasses is fabulous with roasted butternut squash, pita bread and crudites.

Gemmy96 · 14/09/2024 19:34

Good olive oil and balsamic vinegar, hummus, couscous salad?

poppyzbrite4 · 14/09/2024 19:35

Also agree to a selection of dips such as houmous and ganoush, or lentil curry.

Overcover · 14/09/2024 19:37

I'd tell them what's planned and ask them to bring something suitable

SlugsWon · 14/09/2024 19:38

My vegan friends are always thrilled when I get a hunk of 'cheeze' in - they love the stinking stuff! Just buy some vegan applewood smoked fake cheese, and serve it with the rest of the stuff.

They could be rude but OP hasn't said that.

Henleylady · 14/09/2024 19:40

Just ask them to bring something they are happy to eat with the vegan fondue bits. That way everyone is happy.

It's rubbish being vegan and getting nothing but veg and no protein and so agree with others a dhal is good if you need back up - just buy a premade sachet - they are good and you can gave for lunch if not used.

DrinkElephants · 14/09/2024 19:46

I’m vegan and I’d be perfectly happy with some hummus to dip bread and maybe crudités in.

Then maybe some dark chocolate which can be quickly melted in the microwave for dessert with strawberries etc.

But tbh hummus is probably enough. I normally take my own food to things like this, eg always bring my own sausages to a bbq.

Ah, the MN traditional of generally disliking people continues unabated 😁

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 14/09/2024 19:50

I'd probably ask Them to bring their own given the late notice. Failing that, maybe hummus and carrot sticks.....

CorvusPurpureus · 14/09/2024 19:54

Buy tubs of hummus, ratatouille &/or baba ganoush (or make your own - I find making veggie dips a great way to clear the fridge out... )

They can dip exactly the same veg & bread as people are dipping into the fondue.

I'd go with ratatouille as it fits with the theme, & is super easy to make.

Agree that vegan cheese is rank. My dd2 was a vegan for 6 months, & the rest of us were fine with eating mostly vegan, adapting recipes...

...but as dd1 said 'this vegan macaroni cheese stinks of pond water & sadness & it can FUCK OFF.'

Dd1 never swears. She felt pretty strongly about vegan cheese. 😁

Beekeepingmum · 14/09/2024 20:22

I'd get a small range of other dips. Even the non-vegans might appreciate something other than cheese source for dipping.

Namechanger385u4p · 14/09/2024 20:26

Dahl is a good call, it is tasty and a hearty protein.

Or hummus!
