At what age do you indoctrinate in introduce your children to the ritual of tea drinking?

Ds (just 9) has been politely asking whether he is allowed to have tea now. (I think he thinks that it will speed up the magic moment when he is allowed Red Wine and Not Going To Bed Until He Feels Like It.)

stleger · 19/04/2008 21:25

My dd1 started at about 9. My other 2 children have no interest.

Flynnie · 19/04/2008 21:30

DD(2.7) Asked for a cup the other day so she had a small cup that was more milk then anything else with a bit of honey in it.

Think that I had it first at about 5/6.

Remotew · 19/04/2008 21:31

Mine has just started drinking a cup of tea at 13!! Tried to get her interested younger but to no avail.

Remotew · 19/04/2008 21:33

When I was little it was tea or water. I drank tea from an early age.

treelover · 19/04/2008 21:33

i have never given any to my kids., but mil always dilutes it with milk, and gives some to the kids. however there is sooo much milk in it, it is really just a milk drink.
unless you are talking about fennel tea, then ds1 had it from a bottle areound six ish months of age for his diarhoea

WowOoo · 19/04/2008 21:33

MIne drinks Rooibos at leisure. naturally caffeine free...yum. He's 2 and only ever gets the dregs!

Remotew · 19/04/2008 21:34

Rooibus was my staple when I lived in South Africa. Its special, may buy it again.

Purplepillow · 19/04/2008 21:35

My dd (8yrs) has enjoyed the very odd cup of tea since she was about 5, started very milky but she tends to drink more water than anything

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 19/04/2008 21:35

why would you want your children to drink tea?

caffiene os a horridly addictive thing that can cause sleep troubles, anxiety etc etc

sont understand why you would encourage it tbh

StressTeddy · 19/04/2008 21:35

My ds has been drinking tea from about 18 months
Decaff, lots of milk. He loves it

OverMyDeadBody · 19/04/2008 21:36

I indoctrinated DS at a young age and he's been drinking weak cups of tea since about 3yrs.

He has maybe three cups of tea a week, and has his own preferences but has quite a good knowledge of tea varieties now

Spidermama · 19/04/2008 21:36

Mine older two are really enjoying making themselves tea. I ban 'proper' tea after lunch and they have chamomile or Rooibos. I don't really want them having proper tea at all at their age but dh has let them and I don't feel strongly enough about it to resist. No sugar though, obviously.

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 19/04/2008 21:36

ok, I'll piss off and answer my phone when it says 'withheld'

OverMyDeadBody · 19/04/2008 21:37

Trinity Tea is the answer to everything that's why!

SmugColditz · 19/04/2008 21:37

Children enjoy drinking tea. I don't give it with meals, I don't give them caffienated, I fill is with ff milk, I don't see the problem.

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 19/04/2008 21:39

lol overmydeadbody

noon caffienated I dont have a problem with

not all children like it

OverMyDeadBody · 19/04/2008 21:39

I don't stop DS drinking caffienated tea, but wouldn't make hima cup after about 4pm.

Flynnie · 19/04/2008 21:40

If you have any Irish in you(like me) then tea is the next step up from breastmilk

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 19/04/2008 21:40

yes bit OMDB, its not about that night, it's about his nody beginning to think that iot NEEEDS caffiene

and noone does, its nasty stuff

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 19/04/2008 21:40

lol flynnie

Remotew · 19/04/2008 21:41

FFS here we go with the caffeine, sleep problems, who told you that? If you have read it somewhere then dont read that article and it wont happen.

OverMyDeadBody · 19/04/2008 21:42

But there is so much variety of tea out there, I'm sure every child could find one they like!

Herbal, fruit, green, indian, rooibos, emperor's choice, earl grey, darjeeling, lap sang, builder's brew, red label, english breakfast, traditional afternoon, lady grey, white tea...

OverMyDeadBody · 19/04/2008 21:43

shit, I better not mention DS's addiction to whittard's chocolate covered coffee beans then!

stleger · 19/04/2008 21:44

I'm Irish. I was considered odd in dh's family for not giving bottles of sugared milky tea. (Boak).
