Packed lunches I can eat one-handed while driving

One of the things that really frustrates me about my job is that I have to move between sometimes quite distant locations between 12 and 😊1pm, so I am almost always in the car or a taxi on the move over lunchtime. I'm aware that I eat too many sandwiches and am getting portly because of it, but I can't think of anything that I can hold and eat while driving without looking at it that isn't either contained in bread or a pastry item. Can anyone think of anything? I'm always starving, too, so won't be eating a package of spinach like a bag of crisps unless it's an accompaniment to something more substantial.

This can't be real! Although I saw police footage of someone trimming his beard while driving!

LittleYellowCloth · 24/08/2024 12:44

A fixed penalty notice.

You have to have both hands available to drive. Please say where you’re doing this so I can avoid driving near you.

ShowOfHands · 24/08/2024 12:46

Who are you working for? What do you do? Do you have an HR department? You need to build an actual break into your day and eat at a different time. Or eat then drive. Or drive and then eat.

QuestionableMouse · 24/08/2024 12:46

Try some yFood. It's a meal replacement drink and they work very well imo.

QuestionableMouse · 24/08/2024 12:47

And speak to your manager about taking proper breaks - both for your safety and the safety of other people on the road.

So she should drink this while driving?!

Helloworld56 · 24/08/2024 12:49

It doesn't take long to eat a sandwich. Stop somewhere safe, eat the sandwich and drive on.

ElizabethVonArnim · 24/08/2024 12:49

Blimey!

You can receive a penalty notice for eating and/or drinking whilst driving.

Can you eat half before you set off and half when you arrive?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/08/2024 12:52

So, this is the second 'it'll be OK if I do it' driving post today.

Don't do this is my first instruction. It's dangerous.

My advice is:

  • have a bigger breakfast (that isnt cereal and does include protein) and power thru lunch
  • eat before you set off and or after you arrive.
ElizabethVonArnim · 24/08/2024 12:55

I was about to get annoyed and explain all the things I do that make it okay to have my sandwich on the move (eg I never unwrap anything while driving - it's all set out before I set off so I can pick it up without looking, etc) but responses are so unanimous I'll have a rethink.

Blimey!

Are you really surprised by the answers? Do you not know that it is illegal to eat while driving (indeed whilst stationary at traffic lights too). Even if it was not illegal it does not take much to work out that it is dangerous.

spilltheteapot · 24/08/2024 12:57

Hard boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes, pre-sliced cucumber, peppers etc. Cereal bar.

ElizabethVonArnim · 24/08/2024 12:58

It isn't illegal. However, the requirement is for concentration, and I do take the point others are making.

She asked for advice for lunch foods whilst driving. You gave her advice on what to consume.

Bubblybits · 24/08/2024 13:07

It’s never safe to eat while driving, regardless of how you prepare your food. You need to eat more protein at breakfast and ask your manager for a proper break.

That's wise. It only takes a split second for something to happen. You can be lucky, but you might not be, and someone else will pay the price.

Mischance · 24/08/2024 13:09

A friend of mine was fined for eating while stationary at the traffic lights!

KatyaKabanova · 24/08/2024 13:10

"I never unwrap anything while driving" 🙀
I would hope not!

Yes, the police video I saw was all about that. A man trimming his beard, a woman putting on lipstick, people drinking coffee.
They seemed so unaware of the dangers.

I was eating an apple, a piece went down the wrong way, I had a coughing fit for a few minutes. Sure a fuck I was'n concentrating properly.
Stop gaslighting yourself that it is a fair and reasonable thing to do.

ElizabethVonArnim · 24/08/2024 13:44

To be fair, I have posted twice that I am going to change my habits in response to this thread. It isn't very enjoyable to have your arse handed to you online, but I do take the point and will rethink.

Does anyone have any good packed lunch recipes that now no longer have to be eaten one-handed, or really good breakfast recipes?

It's illegal to drink something while driving?!
