Packed lunches I can eat one-handed while driving

One of the things that really frustrates me about my job is that I have to move between sometimes quite distant locations between 12 and 😊1pm, so I am almost always in the car or a taxi on the move over lunchtime. I'm aware that I eat too many sandwiches and am getting portly because of it, but I can't think of anything that I can hold and eat while driving without looking at it that isn't either contained in bread or a pastry item. Can anyone think of anything? I'm always starving, too, so won't be eating a package of spinach like a bag of crisps unless it's an accompaniment to something more substantial.

What about sushi? As long as you don't mess around trying to dip it in soy sauce, just have an open packet with a few rolls on that you can pop in your mouth. Lidl do some good ones for a few quid.

You're looking at finger foods so things like protein bites (chicken is good), chopped veg, breakfast muffins, lettuce wraps etc. Also can the drama queens chill it's not illegal to eat and drive. Most cars have lane assist now and some form of autopilot anyway

Most cars? Where's your data?

Mine's ten years old and doesn't. Lots of cars round here like that, especially the ones the kids drive.

amylou8 · 24/08/2024 16:16

It's not illegal to eat or drink, but could be considered as driving without due care. Generally with due care offences you'll only be prosecuted if something happens.
I'm perfectly capable of eating some grapes, a flapjack or a sandwich while driving on the motorway, and still retain proper control of the vehicle.
If you're not, as it sounds like most of you aren't, then don't.

All these people who can't drive without both hands on the steering wheel, how did you survive changing gear, or putting music on, or the heating all this time? 🙄

@LittleYellowCloth sounds like you hesitate if you have been hit 3 times. FYI my car will do an emergency stop for you, the sensor are actually better than a driver have a look at the Tesla truck video.

Anything like my experiences and the only 'hesitating' has been waiting for the traffic lights to change from red, for the three cars in front to have a space to enter the roundabout (otherwise known as they hadn't even noticed there was a roundabout or stationary traffic in front of them) or to be busy minding my own business when somebody tanked it out of a side road because they were busy doing something more interesting than looking where they were going like eating a chicken wrap and spilling some of it on the lap.

I change gear quickly, while looking straight ahead. I suspect eating sushi is somewhat more of a complex activity.

Those party hats with a cup and straw attached. Put some gazpacho in it. There I solved it safely cos the soup is cold and it is hands-free and OP did not stipulate that she should not look like a muppet.

Donotneedit · 24/08/2024 16:30

Op did you know it’s also illegal for people to acknowledge you’ve changed your mind and will reevaluate your op. You will be forever defined by your starting position, this is the law

You are brilliant. 😂
However, she's reconsidered based on evidence. Maybe she could have that before setting off?

I felt the need to look this up given that almost all cars have drinks holders next to the driver’s seat these days and the RAC website confirms that it is not specifically illegal to drink while you drive but you need to ensure you are not distracted.

Thanks 😊

usernamedifferent · 24/08/2024 16:48

I’m glad you’ve reflected OP.

I used to think it was ok to grab a quick something while driving but a few years ago I know someone who died because he choked on something as he was driving and lost control. Killed his sleeping passenger too.

So now I don’t ever eat / drink whilst actually driving.

I get bored of sandwiches too. So I have tried various other things. As others have suggested, protein will fill you up; so a salad with chicken is a go to for me.

PramsEar · 24/08/2024 17:11

Please schedule a break into your day. It isn’t worth the risk.

A few years ago someone ploughed into the back of me, as got distracted dropping their drink. I was stationary waiting to turn into a side road. They didn’t even see my car.

Thankfully the car seats protected my kids from injury. I wasn’t as lucky, got injured and impact of this is for life.

it only takes a split second. Better to park up and eat/drink than to risk injuring yourself/others through your actions.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 24/08/2024 17:15

ElizabethVonArnim · 24/08/2024 12:58

It isn't illegal. However, the requirement is for concentration, and I do take the point others are making.

What would you do if you choked though? I mean, it's bad enough that you might not be able to concentrate properly anyway with eating and driving, but imagine choking on a cherry tomato then having to get safely to stop somewhere... it doesn't bear thinking about 😨😳😪

Exactly this 😪💔

its not illegal but you could be fined £200 and face 6 points

I wish replying without RTFT was illegal

2024intake · 24/08/2024 17:34

This thread is a total eye opener. I feel like an idiot as I honestly had no idea I could be fined or anything for eating and drinking while driving. Yet reading it I can see that obviously it’s not safe. A swig of water while at a red light I will still do if I am desperately thirsty but no longer will I lay out easy to reach snacks on the passenger seat for my journeys!

CardinalCat · 24/08/2024 17:56

Pack yourself something lovely that you can eat using two hands and do it when you get to your destination or before you set off! You'll enjoy it more too, I bet!

Yes, because "cruise" means "autopilot"! Idiot.

Moonshine5 · 24/08/2024 18:20

As well as being illegal, it's so bad for digestion.
Maybe seek therapy for why you do not deserve to look after yourself properly. #self neglect. Good luck.

You know that's a satirical news site right?

MissMoan · 24/08/2024 18:26

@ElizabethVonArnim agree you have been most graceful. If you absolutely have to eat in your car (hopefully you can stop for a bit), some great mess-free options are small wraps, protein bars, chicken bites. A cup with a straw for any drinks is also useful.

SamuelDJackson · 24/08/2024 18:27

I think the problem is with your work and their expectations. You should have a proper break for food and rest, not be expected to make stupid compromises to your driving, concentration, diet and risk points on your license/fines because of their poor scheduling/unrealistic timetables.
