How would I make a Pad Thai like the takeaway?

We love pad thai (no egg, but with veg and tofu) from our favourite take away. It's one of the few things that my kids will eat too. Would love to replicate it at home, but so far any attempts have been poor! Are there any decent recipes out there? I'm not even sure which noodles to use (presumably not egg ones, as the pad thai at our take away is vegan when we order without the egg). And the sauce/marinade?? I'm guessing that's the special bit that makes the difference....

Same. Blue Dragon are good.

You probably need monosodium glutamate.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 18/08/2024 09:59

You need the right ingredients that you can buy in an Asian supermarket. Tamarind, fish sauce (or vegetarian version) and palm sugar. You need the wide rice noodles not egg noodles. I make a batch of sauce and keep it in the freezer because my DH loves pad Thai. When you get to making it, fry your veg/tofu/chicken, then add the partially cooked noodles (do this by submerging in a bowl of boiling water for 5 minutes, don't boil them) then add your sauce and a splash of water, finally add bean sprouts at the end, don't actually cook them they should be crunchy and raw. This is the sauce recipe I use and it's perfect. 2 tablespoons of sauce per portion. hot-thai-kitchen.com/5-min-pad-thai/#recipe

No you don't. It probably wouldn't hurt but if you use the right ingredients you'll get the flavour of pad Thai without it.

Mine is vegan. I buy vegetarian fish sauce from the market. Use tofu as protein.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 18/08/2024 14:11

Vegetarian fish sauce makes a real difference

The Aldi home kit is great. They do a lively Thai green aswell

SplendidPendips · 18/08/2024 19:22

Thanks everyone. I have added the Blue Dragon kit to my online grocery order for a quick fix, but will give some of the other recipes a try over the coming weeks!

Try this recipe. She is a reliably good recipe creator (the most popular in Australia) and you should be able to get everything at a supermarket.

Pad Thai

A terrific Pad Thai recipe that truly stacks up to great Thai restaurants yet is totally doable for every home cook! No hunting down unusual ingredients.

Most pad thai recipes will contain fish sauce. It’s really what makes pad Thai taste like pad thai, so be careful. You can sub in soy sauce, which will be close.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 19/08/2024 18:41

I've tried lots of make at home kits & they just don't taste like anything you get from a restaurant or take away. Better off ordering a takeaway.

CactusPeach · 22/08/2024 01:06

I use the recipetin recipe that @Porridgeislife linked, my partner loves a pad Thai and is happy with that one.

I think the at home ones are short on the tamarind and fish sauce. z best make the sauce from scratch as a PP suggested
