What is your favourite combo for a roast?

For me it will always be lamb as a first choice, pork as a second

Roast potatoes and mash if possible

Roasted carrots and simple peas.

Never swede, stuffing or cauliflower cheese.

Always Yorkshire pudding and gravy.

You?

Lots of steamed veg - peas, cauliflower, maybe green beans or broccoli
Swede mash
Two types of stuffing - sage & onion and maybe something fruity or nutty
Yorkshire puds
Gravy, cranberry sauce, horseradish sauce

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 21:45

I regularly do roast chicken. Next most frequent is lamb. Rarely pork. And infrequently rib roast.
Veg. vary. Would only every do yorkshire puddings with the beef.

CocoapuffPuff · 04/08/2024 21:49

Roast spuds, carrots, parsnips and butternut squash
Steamed brocolli and Brussels if in season

Proper horseradish

No yorkers as I loathe the things

RosesAndHellebores · 04/08/2024 21:51

Leeks in garlic sauce (we have it instead of onion sauce).

Wash, trim and slice three Leeks. Cook in salted water until softened, then drain.

Sauce: generous slice of butter gently melted, add a finely chopped shallot and soften, stir in two generous teaspoons of very lazy chopped garlic with a little of the oil, add a rounded tablespoon of flour, stir for about two minutes, add 1/2 pint of milk and keep stirring until it thickens - not too runny ( because the Leeks will bring some moisture), add a little salt and a few twists of pepper. Stir in the drained Leeks. Set aside until ready to serve then pop in the microwave for 1.5 to 2 minutes.

StormingNorman · 04/08/2024 22:01

Catterbat · 04/08/2024 22:17

I made myself a little roast for one today. Roast chicken breast, a whole M&S cauliflower cheese, green beans, stuffing and sweet potato fries, with gravy.

I love cauliflower cheese.

Hard no to Yorkshires with anything other than beef!

DiscoBeat · 04/08/2024 22:24

Home made nut roast, crispy roast potatoes and roasted vegetables

AdaColeman · 04/08/2024 22:25

Roast pork
Home made sage & onion stuffing
Roast potatoes (ideally King Edwards)
Green beans and/or broccoli
Gravy with onions & wine
Bramley apple sauce

For many years I made a roast dinner every Sunday, but it's a very rare occurrence for me now, really only at Christmas. Nice to read everyone's menus!

mondaytosunday · 04/08/2024 22:38

Lamb as it's my favourite meat. Turkey (as in Christmas dinner) close second.
Roasties, carrots, peas, french beans, red currant jelly and mint sauce if lamb, stuffing, bread and cranberry sauce if turkey. Yorkies. Sweet potatoes with the turkey. OMG please can someone cook it for me tomorrow?

MightyHiker · 04/08/2024 22:46

Lamb is my fave
Then beef. Turkey, chicken..

But always with;

Roast potatoes
Mash
Yorkshire puddings
Stuffing
Carrots
Broccoli
Mint gravy for lamb
Then I like a bit or horseradish on it too (whichever meat)

Sometimes add cauliflower cheese

TheLadyIsAVamp · 05/08/2024 00:58

I've skipped the previous posts to stop myself being influenced by the delicious sounding meals!
Mine-
Roast chicken, extra crispy skin, stuffing made with sausage meat, spring onion and sage.
Garlic and parmesan roast potatoes (I use semolina)
White cabbage cooked in stock then sautéd with plenty of garlic, butter and white pepper.
Broccoli (I love plain old standard broccoli and can easily eat a whole one alone)
Cauliflower cheese (with lots of mustard) or cheesy leeks.
Minted peas
Carrots
Shop bought Yorkshire pudding. I don't like homemade ones and prefer the more expensive shop bought ones.

Nat6999 · 05/08/2024 02:32

Roast Pork, seasoned Yorkshire pudding to start, stuffing, roast potatoes, cabbage or cauliflower, gravy & apple sauce.

Roast Chicken, Yorkshire pudding to start, roast potatoes, stuffing, bread sauce, roast parsnips, pigs in blankets, sprouts, roast carrots & gravy

Roast lamb, Yorkshire pudding to start, roast or baby new potatoes, kidney beans & peas, mint sauce & redcurrant gravy.

Roast Beef, Yorkshire pudding to start, roast potatoes, broccoli & gravy.

sashh · 05/08/2024 07:48

Lamb is my favorite but beef or beef and chicken are fine. Yes sometimes I do two meats.

Roast potatoes, always. Ideally mash as well.

Yorkshire puddings.

Mashed carrot and swede depending on who is eating with me, if I'm on my own I'll probably just do some sliced carrots.

Cauliflower or broccoli or both or cauliflower cheese with broccoli.

Maybe some green beans or cabbage.

Sometimes I do mashed potato and parsnip with garlic and ginger.

Sometimes I might do mashed turnips with cream and crispy bacon.

Generally at least one mashed veg, something orange and something green.

I might roast some parsnips with the potatoes, again depending on who is eating with me.

Mint sauce, stuffing or apple sauce depending on the meat.

Gravy made from the meat juices.

Bottle of red wine per person.

Roast lamb, Yorkshire pudding to start, roast or baby new potatoes, kidney beans & peas, mint sauce & redcurrant gravy.

Roast Beef, Yorkshire pudding to start, roast potatoes, broccoli & gravy.

Sorry but I can't get on board with the kidney beans, is it like a rice and peas thing? Everything else sounds amazing though!

@RosesAndHellebores you have the combos spot on! Exactly how I would have mine...yum

Twinkletwinklelil · 05/08/2024 13:18

I LOVE a traditional Turkey roast. Basted and stuffed with loads of butter, garlic, sage, rosemary
that’s my Christmas roast go-to.

must haves:
Crispy and fluffy fatty roasties and mash if poss
braised cabbage
buttered peas
honey glazed carrots
pancetta sprouts
yorkshire pudding
gravy
roasted onions in gravy
cranberry sauce.

not must haves but if I have to:
grilled brocolli
cauli cheese
Horse radish

dont like them on my plate at all;
mac and cheese (why?! Not with a roast.. ever!)
parsnips
sweetcorn. (Fine usually but make no sense on a roast!)
Sweet potato
mint sauce

starving now, thanks 🤣
