ok maybe it's sea salt out of a cardboard box but you still do don't you to ensure it's not a tasteless thing

Potatoes and porridge absolutely must have salt!

BeauLocks · 07/04/2008 17:23

Nope. The only thing I put salt on is tomatoes.

Chopchopmissy · 07/04/2008 17:23

No. But thats to do with being a crap cook and forgetting more than anything else! Whoops

ComeOVeneer · 07/04/2008 17:24

Oh I love salt and tomatoes!

JackieNo · 07/04/2008 17:24

Only things I put salt in are water for pasta, and chips, and mashed potato, if I remember (which I don't always). But I'd guess I'm probably not a foodie.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/04/2008 17:25

Of course!

I still use salt in my cooking, for potatoes, pasta, rice, everything in fact. Food without any salt is rank imo, a little salt never killed anyone.

I have four different types of salt in the kitchen though, including a cardboard box, am a salt ponce

ivykaty44 · 07/04/2008 17:25

I am with beaulocks on this one

bootsmonkey · 07/04/2008 17:26

Nope don't add salt to any cooking. I do add celery salt to season salads, and use stock cubes/bouillon for stews, but that is all. I have lost the taste for salt and find ready meals/sauces VERY salty now...

southeastastra · 07/04/2008 17:26

i never used to until i saw hotel inspector where she told someone off for not doing it.

can't tell the difference though

SaintGeorge · 07/04/2008 17:27

Nope, stopped using it completely. Use lots of freshly ground pepper and spices when cooking, but salt I leave for each individual to add to their meal.

I was a saltaholic, but now the only thing I can't bear to eat without it is chips.

FrannyandZooey · 07/04/2008 17:28

in mash, I do
do you mean in new potatoes?

I don;t think this thread was addressed to me anyway but I came to butt in

Twiglett · 07/04/2008 17:28

only add it to boiling potatoes .. that's it .. not on chips .. not in pasta .. but mash needs salt in the boiling water otherwise it's disgusting

OverMyDeadBody · 07/04/2008 17:29

No salt is used in any of the cooking at work though, in fact there isn't even any salt in the kitchen! But I don't practice what I preech.

CountessDracula · 07/04/2008 17:29

I really can't remember the last time I cooked a potato!

Oh yes I made a cottage pie a few weeks ago and yes I put salt in it

And if I am doing roasties I do too

TheFallenMadonna · 07/04/2008 17:30

Blimey. I add salt to most of my cooking. We never add it to food at the table though, except chips of course.

SaintGeorge · 07/04/2008 17:30

Mash needs loads of butter and a splash of milk, or better still cream. Good grind of fresh pepper, no salt required.

BeauLocks · 07/04/2008 17:30

My mother puts loads of salt on absolutely everything, before she's even tasted it. And I mean everything. We went out for a lovely chinese meal a few months ago and she put about a hundred weight of salt on her sweet and sour. She even puts salt on cheese. Weirdo.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/04/2008 17:31

pasta without salt tastes like ,well, like nothing! Like starchy nothingness. SAdding it after it is cooked just isn't quite the same!

Twiglett · 07/04/2008 17:31

disagree vehemently stgeorge (nice to 'ave you back )

mash needs a little salt in the boiling water then lashings of butter and milk .. and maybe a teaspoon of either whole grain mustard or cream of horseradish

TheFallenMadonna · 07/04/2008 17:31

No. Bleurgh.

I put salt in my flapjacks too.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/04/2008 17:32

The no was to pasta cooked without salt.

Not mashed potato a la Twiglett.

FAWKEOFF · 07/04/2008 17:33

only really use salt for chips, pasta and mash....my mum puts it on toast on heap loads of butter....she is gross

constancereader · 07/04/2008 17:33

I always thought that some salt was necessary. Am I wrong about that? I know lots of people who never salt any of their cooking due to health concerns, but as I don't tend to eat much ready made food I don't worry about adding it to my own.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/04/2008 17:34

Mmmm toast with butter, salt and pepper is yummy!

OverMyDeadBody · 07/04/2008 17:36

Yes some salt is necessary and you couldn't sweat without salt. The argument id you get enough from processed packaged stuff but if you only ever cook your own food and don't eat crap processed stuff you do need some.

If you live in hotter climates or do a lot of exercise you need more salt too.
