Is it normal to dislike mushrooms?

PeachesMcLean · 01/04/2008 17:43

I think it's perfectly normal to dislike celery, for instance. It shouldn't be allowed.

DS seems to feel the same way about mushrooms, and I've hardly used them in years due to his tendency to spit them out.

I've been craving a mushroom risotto of late.

DS is nearly 7 now. Can I now convince him they're not evil? Or perhaps such a dislike of mushrooms is commonplace and I shouln't abuse him in this way.

What do you think?

It's perfectly normal to dislike them, they do have a bit of an acquired taste!

Can you make a mushroom risotto for you and something else for him?

They are pretty worthless nutritionally so I don't see any point in amking anyone eat them if they don't like them!

I agree about celery too, vile stuff.

cornsilk · 01/04/2008 17:46

I have never made risotto. Is that normal?

LilRedWG · 01/04/2008 17:47

You allowed him to live in your home without eating mushrooms for seven years?

I was heart-broken when DD started weaning and refused mushrooms - I thought we may have to trade her in for a new model. But there is a happy ending - she now likes mushrooms

Poor DH isn't overly keen (for that read, he doesn't like them or see the point in them) but has resigned himself to the fact that I put them in every meal possible. It's a good job he loves me.

OverMyDeadBody · 01/04/2008 17:47

I don't allow any celery or mushrooms into my commercial kitchen! We make tasty risottos without the need for either!

LilRedWG · 01/04/2008 17:48

Can you tell I like mushrooms?

meemar · 01/04/2008 17:48

I hate them, as a result we don't eat them because I do all the cooking

The DSs will eat them in other peoples cooking though, and seem to quite like them.

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2008 17:48

Peaches, are you pregnant... I craved mushroom risotto when I was pregnant.

I love mushrooms.

DS1 hates mushrooms. He tells me no boys like mushrooms.

DS2 will sometimes eat them if the ate sliced into T-shapes.

Doobydoo · 01/04/2008 17:49

Like em raw but not cooked as they remind me of slugs!

OverMyDeadBody · 01/04/2008 17:49

They are quite nice on pizza though.

Or fried in butter with toast

ScarletA · 01/04/2008 17:50

My kids have never liked them (4 and 6) but I keep presenting them with them, just in case one day they'll change their minds. They just pick them out of the food and put them on my plate! Same is true with aubergines and courgettes - vegetables that i didn't like when I was a kid either.

MrsMattie · 01/04/2008 17:52

Lots of people - adults as well as kids - hate mushrooms.
I can't stand them. Bleeeeurgh! It's the slimy texture of them when cooked and the earthy weirdness of them when they're raw ...oh, and the smell. Puke.

PeachesMcLean · 01/04/2008 17:56

LOL deffo not pregnant. Just really deprived of mushrooms over the last few years. I don't know quite how it happened, DS was born healthy enough and has developed ok, but he doesn't like mushrooms. Very odd.

V sad at "worthless nutritionally"

Hanaflower, it has to be mushroom with nothing else, maybe a little chicken, white wine, parmesan.... Nothing else will do.

LilRedWG, I'm with you. Couldn't cook without mushrooms before DS was weaned.

I hate mushrooms, as does dd (6) and dh, you can't force people to change the food the dislike.

His mother always made food wtih things he hated in and he's never forgiven her and often went hungry all day at school as she insisted on putting butter in his sandwiches even after he told her he hated it.

Ds1 and ds2 on the other hand love mushrooms.

I think it's normal to dislike any food that you don't like the taste of.

JodieG1 · 01/04/2008 17:59

Why can't you just make yourself a mushroom risotto and something else for the others? I would if I really fancied something.

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2008 18:00

Cornsilk... you must make risotto... or you will never be normal.

You know what, Jodie, that's just what I'm gonna do. There's fish pie in the freezer for just such emergencies. I had a rebellious moment in Tesco t'other day and bought shitake and chestnut mushrooms and some arborio. So here goes...

OP posts:
PeachesMcLean · 01/04/2008 18:06

Pelafina, that's what I'm hoping to try. I thought if i chopped them really small it would get the flavour on the rice without him noticing the chunks. But he'll spot me chopping them.... unless I go and chop them in private somewhere... ermmmmm....

Sidge · 01/04/2008 18:06

Ugh I hate mushrooms.

They're all slimy, and slippery, and fungusy - blurgggghhhh.

DH loves them, but rarely gets them. He cooks them separately and then adds them to his spag bol/chicken/steak whatever.

LilRedWG · 01/04/2008 18:07

Can DS not just pick them out of his food?

edam · 01/04/2008 18:07

Hate mushrooms. Yuck yuck yuckety yuck. Slimey things that taste dire IMO. Can just about manage a raw button mushroom if forced at gunpoint.

I like celery, though. So maybe Peaches and I should get together - I can pick the mushrooms out and put them on her plate and she can do the same with any celery that's hanging around.
