What veggie food does your child like? (That isn’t pizza or pasta?)

Eggyeggyegyy · 20/04/2024 12:56

It doesn’t have to be complicated. But what vegetarian food will your child eat happily that isn’t pizza or pasta?

DS (12) wants to go veggie. Easy in a way as I am already veggie. But tricky also as he doesn’t like tofu, dhal etc.

So I’d love some tips!

Even if it’s something incredibly simple!

I like making mixed bean n sweet potato enchiladas

Or

Maybe a nice home made cheese and onion pie?

SpringOfContentment · 20/04/2024 13:23

Quiche, wraps, stir fry, soup.

I wouldn't eat tofu either!

mitogoshi · 20/04/2024 13:24

When my then very fussy 13 year old announced she wanted to be vegetarian I said it was on condition she ate what I was offering. She started eating vegetables, pulses , tofu etc from then onwards.

karmakameleon · 20/04/2024 13:26

I make a pinto bean chilli which is popular. Serve with either wraps to make bean burritos, as nachos or with cornbread.

Mine don’t eat dhal but happy to eat lots of vegetarian curries. Chickpeas and kidney beans both go down well and with frozen paratha are a quick dinner.

This week we are having meat haggis because DS2 wants to try but usually we have vegetarian.

Maybe too close to pizza but I often do a puff pastry tart with various topping.

Lots of great ideas here. Also bean chilli with rice or nachos, vegetable lasagna, paneer in curries.

Birmingbacon · 20/04/2024 13:58

would he consider being pescatarian instead? A lot easier if he's a bit fussy.

AndBeyond · 20/04/2024 14:02

I have 2 x very fussy eaters! But either one or both of them like:

Hummus, quiche, tortilla, tomato soup, egg on toast, anything with chips.

I was veggie from about 9yo and ate a lot of Quorn! It was the 90s though and not a lot of other options

Eggyeggyegyy · 20/04/2024 14:03

I’m loving these ideas, thank you!!! Keep em coming if anyone has more! I am making a list - I reckon he’d try lots of these things!

To someone who asked me what he does like to eat, when not eating veggie food, it’s chicken and brown rice and bolognese that he loves. The veggie food he likes is pasta with pesto (I make it) or tomato pasta (I make it, that hidden veggie one). But he’s pretty good with vegetables anyway (broccoli, cucumber, peppers etc). And he likes pizza of course! But really, that’s all he requests: pasta, pasta, pasta. So I’m really keen on more ideas!

Beanburgers - not the crappy meat imitation things, as they are horrible in taste and texture imo, but proper beanburgers with texture, a crispy coating and all the usual burger additions (cheese, tomato, lettuce, sliced pickles, etc, etc).

Chilli - even the Stagg tins are nice and you can easily increase the volume and nutrition by adding further veg to them - they're very good for jacket potatoes as well.

He might not like dahl/lentils, but he might like chickpeas (the tinned brown ones have far more flavour and texture), kidney beans, black beans or butter beans, for example. If he likes tomato, they lend themselves far better to things with a large amount of tomato puree added, like chilli with black beans/kidney beans, etc. Adding things like tamarind paste add extra depth of flavour than can be lacking in lentil dishes.

Myriad spiced vegetable dishes - cauliflower, okra, potato, aubergine, courgette, mushrooms, etc.

A jacket potato with cheese and beans (with or without veggie frankfurter sausages) is a good meal - you could also do sweet potatoes and cream cheese instead. At risk of a cliché, lots of salad goes well.

Nothing wrong with things like egg & chips, vegetarian toad in the hole or halloumi burgers. A cheese and onion pasty or a vegetable pie is fine (the latter is good with potatoes and standard veg. And if he likes quorn, there's all the nuggety things.

Tofu is delicious if prepared and cooked properly

Georgethecat1 · 20/04/2024 14:31

We swap anything that would be mince for Quorn and beans which works well for Mexican foods.

Roasted / air fried chickpeas with cumin

Full disclosure neither of my kids will eat all the meals on this list but each one is appreciated by at least one

GingerIsBest · 20/04/2024 14:50

DS loves aubergines. So pretty much anything with aubergine - I do a tomato/aubergine/chilli pasta sauce, or curries of various types because as long as I add aubergine, DS will eat them! I need to experiment with roasted aubergine too.

Ditto, he loves mushrooms. Stuffed mushrooms are good but quite faffy and even with rice hard to fill up on. (he used to life stuffed peppers but for some reason not so much anymore). We also do mushrooms in a sort of creamy sauce for pasta or on rice.

Or combine - mushroom and aubergine burgers! Drizzle of honey, some goats cheese and some thyme elevates them.

Yes to risotto but I find it hard to get the balance right with proteins. A friend puts beans in her risotto so I should maybe try that.

Shakshuka or my version of it.

DH and I are both vegetarian so our kids are too as they're only 5 and 2. Eldest is a pretty fussy eater and youngest, although better, often doesn't like the few things that eldest does, which is a pain.

Stuff they both usually eat ok:

  • Bolognese made with veggie mince, we like Asda's own the best.
  • Lots of tomato/veg pasta dishes (or tortellini) as you say. Grated cheese on top for some protein.
  • I make the Quorn supergreen pasta salad, recipe on the Quorn website.
  • Gnocchi for a change from pasta.
  • Pasta or gnocchi bakes as a change!
  • Mild curries and boiled rice and/or naan bread. For protein sources we mostly hse chickpeas or Quorn pieces.
  • Quick easy oven food like pizza as you say, veggie burgers, Quorn nuggets, veggie sausages, vegetable or cheese and onion pies/pasties, Greggs vegan sausage rolls and so on.
  • I make a lot of hearty stews with chickpeas and/or veggie sausages.
  • Veggie lasagne (made with mixed vegetables or veggie mince)
  • Jacket potatoes with cheese and beans
  • Mac and cheese
