Which butter?

i used to use Lurpak spreadable but have moved over to butter. Tried Kerrygold and Lurpak, which are Ok, but now got a Yorkshire one which I’m not keen on and has colouring in it.
What is your favourite butter that I should try?

Depends which type of butter you prefer. There are two types: lactic butter, which is Lurpak (and usually any other butter in a silver foil/pack) and sweetcream, like Anchor (and usually any other butter in a creamy/yellow/gold foil/pack).

BIWI · 12/02/2024 11:43

Has it really got colouring in it, or is it just very yellow? If the latter, then that is a sweetcream. Lactic butter is very pale in colour.

ODFOx · 12/02/2024 11:45

@BIWI please can you explain further? Google isn't explaining in terms I understand

@DustyLee123 try Le President. I think it might be what you are looking for.

pickledandpuzzled · 12/02/2024 11:46

If you don’t like yellow salted butter, then you probably want an unsalted butter- I think there’s a French brand that’s popular.

I don’t know because I make my own pale butter and like to buy the yellow salted anchor style butter.

As BIWI says, they are two different things.

idontlikealdi · 12/02/2024 11:46

President salted is my favourite.

BIWI · 12/02/2024 11:47

Lactic butter has a culture added to it, which gives it that slightly tangy taste.

There are two main types of butter: sweet cream or lactic butter. Most butters found in the UK are sweet cream butters. Cream is delicately churned to create a sweet and balanced butter. Lactic butter is made from cream to which lactic cultures are added, to create a more creamy, fuller flavoured product.

From lactalis.co.uk (who sell the President brand in the UK)

pickledandpuzzled · 12/02/2024 11:47

@ODFOx the pale butter is made from fresh cream. Cream that’s older/been fermented makes the yellow butter that’s usually salted.

You can get the pale butter rolled in sea salt, which is lush.

Countrylife is the one.

SnowsFalling · 12/02/2024 11:49

Personally, Tesco own salted.

But, if you like lurpack spreadable, I'd go for lurpack, or other silver wrapped butter. Probably slightly salted. ie as close to your previous spreadable, but in butter form.

Xiaoxiong · 12/02/2024 12:52

I live for the Isigny Saint-Mere unpasteurised butter in the blue wrapper from Sainsburys/Waitrose/Ocado for toast/spreading.

Close runner up is Trewithen Dairy salted butter which you can get lots of places.

Tulipvase · 12/02/2024 12:56

I have never heard sweet cream as a term for butter. I’d have assumed it was an American term.

I normally get what’s on offer. But I have discovered I don’t like Waitrose own, it has a very odd smell.

It was in the ingredients, I was surprised as I don’t see that it would need it, but then I’m not a butter manufacturer!

It’s slightly salted that I like, so will work my way through your suggestions.

Just buy a block of salted butter from Tesco or Aldi. Much better for you than those processed spreads

Frizzyleaf · 12/02/2024 13:57

Calon Wen organic butter is my favourite. It is a bit more expensive than non-organic but absolutely worth it for the taste and ethics of organic farming.

Sophist · 12/02/2024 14:00

I recommend Calon Wen, which comes in lightly salted or unsalted. It's organic and grass-fed and made by a farmers' collective in Wales.

Fen Farm Bungay butter is a lovely cultured butter but I think too expensive for most people to use as an everyday butter.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/02/2024 14:05

I have Sainsbury's TTD West Country Farmhouse Butter - but a prefer a higher salt content & this one does.

Cookerhood · 12/02/2024 14:10

The Aldi one with salt crystals is nice. Easy to make your own too, if cream is reduced (not really worth it unless it's a good reduction, but it is delicious).

MuddySnow · 13/02/2024 10:17

Yeo Valley. Expensive and addictive. Eat in thick slabs straight from the fridge. Toast optional.

minipie · 17/02/2024 21:36

President unsalted hands down for me.

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 17/02/2024 21:41

President salted is my absolute favourite, and I buy it as a treat (their squirty cream at Xmas was divine!)
For everyday use I like Anchor or Lurpak.

Boymum2104 · 17/02/2024 22:04

You lot must be millionaires 😂

EwwSprouts · 17/02/2024 22:07

Anchor salted every time. Would rather have toast with just jam if the only option was Lurpack.

Floralnomad · 17/02/2024 22:10

We use either Kerrygold or M&S slightly salted depending on where I’m shopping . Kerrygold stays softer
