How do you stop yourself eating at night??

Trying to do intermittent fasting. But really just want to stop eating in the evening in general because I just gravitate to snacks and shite plus it often gives me a belly ache (have gastro issues)

I was supposed to not eat anything after 7pm but I've just had a babybel and now to to raid everything 😭

I find it much much easier to fast in the mornings. I eat no breakfast, smallish lunch, snack 5/6ish and then a decent dinner about 8/8.30. Which usually is enough to keep me from raiding the snacks (unless I’m an idiot and stay up till midnight but that’s a whole other problem!)

I water floss then brush my teeth. They feel lovely after and it's such an arse faff to do it again before bed. Basically while I always feel I could snack the thought of brushing again keeps it at bay.

All bets are off on a Friday and a Saturday though when I've had wine and could represent Great Britain in the Snacking Olympics Grin

Clean my teeth, grab a big glass of iced water and declare the kitchen shut (if anyone wants anything they can get it themselves).

Lovelydovey · 29/01/2024 20:50

And don't have any snacks foods in the house if you can avoid it.

zaxxon · 29/01/2024 20:52

Mint tea is a good after-dinner drink, because everything tastes foul after it.

Agecanonix · 29/01/2024 20:52

Brush my teeth
Drink peppermint tea
Go to bed with a good book

I couldn't do this. A large meal at 8.30 would have me in cramps all night.

Eat a proper dinner that is filling but also insorporates some sort of treat. Don't buy food you know you binge on or accept you will ration it out. Make your dinner taste and look nice, decent portion, eat slowly not while chatting.

minipie · 29/01/2024 21:02

Really? What time do you go to bed? We don’t till 11ish so maybe that’s why.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 29/01/2024 21:05

I’ve been trying to cut out evening snacks since learning how back evening eating is for inflammation. I now try not to eat after 6 and I have breakfast (which is usually yoghurt, a shake or chia porridge) around 8 or 8.30.
For me, if I have a good day with plenty of nutritious food for lunch and dinner (I eat around 12.30 and 5.30) then I’m way less prone to snack in the evening. If I’ve tried to starve myself in the day then evening food (CHOCOLAAAATE) becomes inevitable!!!

I have gastro issues like I said so if I lay down after eating I would get pain.

I go to bed about 9.30/10pm

Its habit - which you need to break. Make sure you eat a satisfying dinner and you won’t want to eat in the evening. I brush my teeth anfter dinner and have water (I started this when I had Invisalign). It was so much faff to eat anything I just didn’t bother. I’ve been doing it so long now I just don’t think about it.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 21:50

Eat your main meal at lunchtime. Make sure that it's a proper meal with lots of green veg and a bit of protein, some fat and not much carbohydrates. If you want something like some nuts or cheese, eat them before you get home.

BingoMarieHeeler · 29/01/2024 21:52

Become too lazy to get off the couch

Have some choc after dinner then brush teeth

Brush teeth during kids bath time if you’ve eaten your dinner by then (if that’s a part of your day)

woopdedoodle · 29/01/2024 21:54

tea, rooibos, coconut and coco . I get mine from Sainsburys.

suki1964 · 29/01/2024 21:59

I dont mean to be cheeky, but if you are eating your dinner/supper/tea at 7pm and are going to bed 2.5 hrs later, why do you need snacks?

We eat late here 7:30 ish, and thats me for the night unless im up past 1am then I might need a biscuit - might.

What are your evening meals?

Because I'm a fat fuck obviously.
Hence needing to lose weight and stop snacking. It's boredom and being greedy. Emotional eating too.

And I eat about 5.30/6pm with the kids.

I don't need snacks. That's why I'm asking how do people avoid doing it. Because I find it difficult to.

This sounds really patronising but when I saw it as a tip it just suddenly seemed so obvious and it really works for me. The tip is....do something else. When I start snaffling round for snacks I force myself to do anything else. As a consequence, whenever I am dieting, my house is very clean indeed Grin

Fireyflies · 29/01/2024 22:05

I eat early because a later dinner tends to disturb my sleep. I find the best way to avoid snacking is to make a hot drink or two in the evening. And keep away from the kitchen.

jellybe · 29/01/2024 22:10

Having something to do with my hands as I watch telly in the evening really helps me. I knit or sew to keep my hands busy otherwise I find myself reaching for a snack I don't need.

Like I say, I wasnt meaning to be cheeky at all

Personally Im one of those ruddy annoying people who only eats when hungry. Thats not to say Im not over weight, I am, not as much as I was, but still fighting the bulge. See cos until last year, even though I did only eat when hungry I ate the wrong foods - high fat, high salt/sugar , high carb, mostly I lived on bread - toast, sandwiches ,and add to that the butter, the cheese, the peanut butter , the crisps ( do love a crisp butty ) the chocolate. Now Ive become one of those annoying people who has ditched all that and now eats high protein, low salt/sugar. lowish carbs and upped the veg and the weight is going - slowly, but going Hell Ive even embraced fruit

So dinner for me at 7:45 was air frier hand cut wedges and a chilli made with chicken mince and baked beans with lots of onions and peppers , and seriously a huge plate full and I ear marked a fat/sugar/sweetener free yoghurt and fruit for dessert/snack for if I get hungry again before bed

I also keep myself busy in the evenings, slouched on the sofa in front of the tv, I play online games or crochet or Ill paint my nails, put a face pack on. I also keep a drink to hand, tea, squash, Diet Coke , I dont let myself get thirsty cos that will translate to my brain Im hungry

Theres lots of snacks you can eat that arent fattening and are better for filling you, my go to is low fat cheese and fruit - I leave the crackers , chicken drumsticks, hardboiled eggs

Try swapping to the high protein instead of the sweet, it will help with weight loss

SleepyYolo · 30/01/2024 06:22

Don't have snacks you can't resist and eat a bigger portion at dinner ideally at vegetables. Sleep earlier.

SleepyYolo · 30/01/2024 06:24

I'm guessing you snacked after lunch for aren't very hungry for dinner at 5.30 or 6 anf end up having a relatively smaller portion.

Make sure you don't snack between lunch and dinner then have a side plate full of veg with a good portion of main plate of dinner. Then floss and brush your teeth half an hour to an hour after dinner.
