Offer coffee and cake or tea and biscuits. Jesus I had left home by that age and was working and managed all my own food!!

This is another one of those Mumsnet "doing something slightly nice for someone else is like donating a kidney" isn't it? If my friend's 18 year old was coming to my town for an interview, of course I'd have them stay over and give them something nice to eat. Of course I would! And I'd expect the same for one of mine.

The kid ain't staying at OPs

Train in.
Interview
Visit op. (Op Offered)
train home.

I'd give the kid an 'Out' if I'm honest, let her know that she doesn't have to visit if she'd rather just head straight home or to the shops.

Karwomannghia · 26/01/2024 19:23

Jacket potato
mac n cheese

She isn't staying over. She is getting train in, doing interview, going to visit her mums friend. ( at ops offer) kid would probably rather go shopping but probably feels obliged. Then she is getting train home same day.

AutumnCrow · 26/01/2024 19:35

Make her the full cooked breakfast that she is missing that day. Get the exact recipe and proportions from her mum. Practice the day before.

It's the only way to be sure.

PamelaParis · 26/01/2024 19:40

Seeing as it's just one lunch, then pizza at Pizza Hut by herself.

Yes to this but she’s not staying.

Gosh there’s no big mystery! I live close to the train station. She’s has one those super off peak tickets which doesn’t leave much time for wandering around after. I had asked friend if there’s anything I can help with - bus/walking routes to the interview, does she want to stop by for tea or lunch? She said she’ll let me know. Then texted today asking if the lunch offer still stands. That is all.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah also @CurlewKate I don't think a jacket potato or cheese toastie is something 'nice to eat' no offence OP I'm sure it's lovely but just standard lunch food! OP herself admits that she's a lazy cook.
Not sure what all this faff is for actually.

It sounds like mum is worried about her DD missing the train and decided that lunch at your house is nicer than sitting in the train station eating a sandwich (since her darling daughter doesn't like sandwiches!) 😂

TempleOfBloom · 26/01/2024 19:54

Pasta pesto.

Possibly stretch to tortellini. The bags of Rana look nice.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 26/01/2024 19:55

my god just get an uber eats

Synergies · 26/01/2024 21:17

Risotto
Jacket potato
Pasta
Sausages & mash
Asian style stir fry / fried rice
Omelette

These are the sorts of things I eat all week

Cheeesus · 26/01/2024 21:22

Eggs and avocado on toast.

AdaColeman · 26/01/2024 21:39

For someone popping in for a quick lunch, I'd make an omelette with hash browns or chips, or egg fried rice or a stir fry with noodles.
Another idea is a chicken or sausage casserole, have it ready so it can be served out as soon as she arrives.

I'd be glad to help out a friend's child if they were visiting my town.

Mumaway · 26/01/2024 21:54

Jacket potatoes, instant noodles, quesadillas,
eggs,

Unless there's a neurodiversity or similar drip-feed coming, surely the young lady should just take what's given?
Especially as you're so kind to let her stop over. Not sure why she can't just buy herself some lunch. She is 18 and attending a job interview not a 6 year old that needs an adult chaperone.

In any case, surely it's also more normal for her to suggest what she 'will' eat rather than just giving you a list of what she won't.

Edited

Would you treat an adult guest like this ?
presumably the op has invited her friend's daughter to have lunch with her and freshen up and, like every single one of us, wishes to give her guest a lunch she would enjoy.

i can't believe people on here would actually, in reality just say "here's a pot noodle, suck it up because you ain't 6 any more"

OhGingleBells · 17/05/2024 09:09

Pasta with some nice garlic bread. A pasta bake or something. If she ends up running late from the interview you can stick it in a pot for her to eat on the train.

That guest has long come and gone. How did this thread get reignited?
