Don't get me wrong, I LOVE potatoes. I can even see the appeal of a stew, with potatoes, served on rice...

But what's with the roast potato AND mashed potato in one meal thing? I am on a food group and I quite often see this when people post their Sunday roasts - roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, veggies, meat, gravy etc.

If I had AIBU voting it would be:

IABU to think ONE kind of potato is enough for any meal?

Or have I just completely missed one of the great joys of anyone's foodie life?

Me too. A well made roast potato is a wonderful thing, partly because it can be turned into the best mash ever using your fork.

Maybe they're not v good at making roast potatoes, or don't have space for enough so it's an easy way to make more potatoes without using the oven?

Multipleexclamationmarks · 15/01/2024 13:41

Yabu. Potatoes are excellent.
Roast and mash on a roast is normal isn't it? Totally different taste/textures.
Last night I had meat n potato pie with mash. Yum.
Not so healthy though. 🤷‍♀️

Cheeesus · 15/01/2024 13:42

I don’t get it either, I’d tend to have a preference for one of them, and then the other feels redundant.

NetballHoop · 15/01/2024 13:47

Double potatoes is just wrong.
Anyway, Sunday roast has roasties and Yorkshires. Mash has no place in a roast.

MerryMarigold · 15/01/2024 13:48

I'm with you OP. Today at work a child made me a pretend pizza with a burger bun topping. Bread pizza - yum! This is similar.

Afestivechange · 15/01/2024 13:49

All I can say is that you must never, ever attend an Irish wedding.

TRIPLE potatoes to do it in style.

Oh my word, yes. See also - pizza with chips? I find that MIND BOGGLING.

I agree but then I’m sometimes partial to lasagne or spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread so I’m not opposed to double carbs.

just mash and roasties are so similar, I do like swede mash with my roast dinners (and also then with roasties of course)

Mrsjayy · 15/01/2024 13:56

I bet lasange and chips blow your mind! double potato is delicious 😋

UpUpUpU · 15/01/2024 13:59

Definitely double spuds on a roast! If I had to chose one, it would be mash but both is a winner!

SpaceOP · 15/01/2024 14:00

@Mrsjayy I didn't even know that lasagna and chips was a thing and yes, it BLOWS MY MIND.

I have to admit, I struggle with bread and pasta but I'm married to a mediterranean man so I accept that bread with pasta is a thing! And I'll admit t ohappily eating the bread, then eating the pasta, in Italian restaurants.

At in-laws for dinner last night we had roast, mashed and dauphinois potatoes.

I love potatoes in any form really. Always leave my roasties for last as they are superior.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2024 14:01

I suppose if it's the only meal you make proper gravy for then you might want to do this.Confused

But no... roast potatoes with the roast, then if you want mash do the traditional thing and make shepherds/cottage pie with the leftover meat the next day.

A proper roast will be at least 'double carbs' anyway with Yorkshire puds and/or stuffing.

Titsywoo · 15/01/2024 14:02

Yes I also think this is odd. People who get chips and rice with their chinese confuse me. Such a weird combo and so heavy to eat. The only time I have 2 starchy carbs with a meal is curry as I have rice and a bit of naan bread but I always find myself a bit bloated because of it.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 15/01/2024 14:03

Yesterday I made 5, yes 5!, types of potato for Sunday dinner (Roasties, mash, daupinois, croquettes and sweet potato)! Everyone in my family has different preferences, so I make them all (but people do usually choose 2 types out of them all!)

LaCuntiatta · 15/01/2024 14:03

I don't do it...but damn it I RESPECT it.

I love spuds 🥔 and honestly just don't do double potatoes because I somehow feel it isn't allowed. When I see people having double carbs especially double potatoes I'm honestly a little jealous 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2024 14:04

If I do that I wouldn't want much rice and certainly not a whole full sized naan.

No idea how anyone eats chips with a lasagne...unless they're not having any garlic bread?

Oh my giddy aunt... But I have to say, nonetheless - impressive!

Yabu

blackpanth · 15/01/2024 14:06

You need both on a Sunday roast

SpaceOP · 15/01/2024 14:07

@ErrolTheDragon yes, roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding are one of the few double carbs I'm okay with. Ditto stew with potatoes, served on rice as per OP.

I do also do rice and bread with curry if it's a takeaway, but only because I LOVE naan bread but prefer the actual curry with rice. I am appropriately stingy with my rice portions as a way to mitigate the double carbs (less so with the naan bread).

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 15/01/2024 14:09

I can't do rice and chips in a take away the texture Is wrong!

trulyunruly01 · 15/01/2024 14:10

That pp who said they'd choose mash over roasties should be banned from MN.
Some other mashed vegetable such as carrot/parsnip/swede - ok, I can deal with that.

Nestofwalnuts · 15/01/2024 14:10

I don't get it at all. No mash with a roast ever. Mash goes with goulash or stew or on top of cottage pie and fish pie. Or has bangers upended in it, Desperate Dan style. It is brilliant but not with roasties.

I hate carb on carb. DH is always suggesting stuff like potato pie or that Italian pasta dish with torn bread or breadcrumbs sprinkled over the pasta. Yuck.
