Don't get me wrong, I LOVE potatoes. I can even see the appeal of a stew, with potatoes, served on rice...

But what's with the roast potato AND mashed potato in one meal thing? I am on a food group and I quite often see this when people post their Sunday roasts - roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, veggies, meat, gravy etc.

If I had AIBU voting it would be:

IABU to think ONE kind of potato is enough for any meal?

Or have I just completely missed one of the great joys of anyone's foodie life?

IRL I've never heard of anyone having two types of potato with a meal or ever seen it on a menu. It's a MN thing, I think.

Our local does a lovely Sunday roast dinner and you get roast potatoes and a tiny bit of mash. The food is quite posh in there.

doris9034 · 15/01/2024 14:39

My Nan (not Irish!) used to do triple potatoes for Sunday Dinner - roast, mash and boiled! I'm a roastie person - the other two have their place, but not in the same place!

badger2005 · 15/01/2024 14:40

Dd's friends like to get 2 sides when they go to Nandos - mash and fries!

PuttingDownRoots · 15/01/2024 14:43

Mash doesn't go with a roast... boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, fried potatoes, dauphinose... but not mash.

Mash is a fill you up weekday potato.

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 15/01/2024 14:44

I hate mash so no way am I giving up roast potato space on my plate for that mush

Bouncyball23 · 15/01/2024 14:45

I sometimes do both if I've gotten carried away and peeled to many potatoes or if there is potatoes left from the last bag that need using up.

yodaforpresident · 15/01/2024 14:46

Double potatoes are a thing of beauty!

I recall my utter sadness watching SIL making 'mashed' potates and she didn't dry them or add milk and butter 😢- they looked so miserable.

DH was somewhat perplexed when he was first served them but now even loves champ.

SiobhanSharpe · 15/01/2024 14:50

When i was at boarding school i used to spend some weekends with an aunt and uncle. Aunt was Irish and used to do both roast potatoes and mashed potatoes with Sunday lunch. I rather liked them.
I also recall having roast spuds plus buttered new potatoes in the same meal.
Don't knock it till you've tried it.
(Staying with DH's Irish family in Ireland, for dinner you got a large plate totally covered rim to rim with buttered boiled potaotes, then topped with meat and other veg. Cabbage. Then gravy. What's not to like? )

I'm sorry that you have clearly not experienced proper mashed potatoes. have you tried aligot?

I'm a purist, so no. But no judgement here... I can totally see the appeal! I like to leave more tummy space for the potato though! Grin

I've eaten proper mashed potato. Made by all sorts of people, even tried it in a michelin star restaurant. I'm just not a mash fan.

BestIsWest · 15/01/2024 14:59

’half and half’ rice and chips with curry is a completely normal thing locally.

I’m not much of a potato fan so give them a miss (even the roasties).

therealcookiemonster · 15/01/2024 15:01

for the potato lovers on this thread.... I reccommend bengali style mashed potatoes - potatoes mashed with finely chopped shallots, green chillies and ghee or butter or Bangladeshi mustard oil (has to be the real stuff, just use ghee or butter if no Bangladeshi grocers near you). NO MILK

this mashed potato is best eaten with rice, daal, salad and a Bangladeshi omelette (eggs whisked with chopped shallots and green chillies, NO MILK).

Trust me, it is a revelation. highly addictive. drooling just thinking of it. you can also mix in some grated cheese and use that mix to make a grilled potato/cheese sandwich.

SilverSimca · 15/01/2024 15:07

Toby Carvery does mash and roast potatoes, and I am right there for that. I wouldn't make them both myself, but I am happy to eat them both with a roast if they are offered. Different textures, different role to play in the meal.

I have been served baked potato with a side order of crisps in cafes in the past and that is where I draw the double potato line.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 15/01/2024 15:08

Who the hell serves stew on a bed of rice??

Anyway, I'm Irish, so I respect the spuds.

Potatoes cooked and served differently, taste different. I can certainly eat numerous styles of potatoes in one meal.

Marblessolveeverything · 15/01/2024 15:10

Yabvvvvvvu, roast taste completely different. Xmas here involves the works, mash, dauphine, hassleback, roast, croquet. Then every vegetable known to mankind!

Just keep those yorkies away from me, I have yet to find the joy. The English "boy" we are late 40s, friend keeps trying to sell them to me 😜

Yep Irish and proud.

stroganoff is always served with rice and that's basically a stew

Heather37231 · 15/01/2024 15:12

So is chilli. And most curries are stews.

The stroganoff itself doesn't have potatoes in it though. The OP was referring to a stew which is made with potatoes.

true

yodaforpresident · 15/01/2024 15:17

Exactly that; it was tragic.

peachgreen · 15/01/2024 15:18

First dinner my Northern Irish FIL ever made me had five types of potato. 😂

yodaforpresident · 15/01/2024 15:18

Quote fail - that was to @SpaceOP
