Having beef for Christmas lunch. Not sure about starter and dessert yet.

What is everyone making?

DD1 has requested Coquilles St Jacques again this year, so we are having those as a starter. Shop bought though (M&S. Currently nestled comfortably in the freezer), as there is enough to do for the main course without fiddling about with those too.

There would be an uproar if we didn't have Xmas pud with a choice of custard or ice cream for pudding. It's a favourite with all, but DDs' pyromaniacal tendencies enjoy the theatre of it too. Particularly the years I misjudge the quantity of rum... This is also shop bought. Sometimes it is followed by a cheese board if anyone is capable of levering themselves off the sofa and rolling to the kitchen.
We have another 'Christmas Day' on Boxing Day with wider family, and I will usually make a pavlova for that.

User1775 · 08/12/2023 14:36

We eat a 3 course meal over 6hours 😂Starters at 1ish - this year chilli fillet beef salad, full Xmas dinner at 3 ish, puddings at 6ish - we have Cartmel puddings as DS is obsessed.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 08/12/2023 14:54

We have blinis, pigs in blankets and mini sausage rolls with champagne as I put lunch in.

Lunch is beef.

Then pudding is trifle/Xmas pudding with tinned custard (dads preference) or chocolate log. Don't usually eat pudding until we've been for a walk after lunch though.

We are also having beef. SIL is bringing dessert so I'm not sure. I think I might skip a proper starter - it's going to be very crowded in our house and I think the kids wouldn't cope so I'm toying with a selection of really lovely nibbles. Probably some pates - chicken, salmon and mushroom, crackers, bread etc. Possibly a whole baked camembert.

Shit, Camembert, not Brie! Doh, thank you, just changed my Xmas order 😂

PanettonePuff · 08/12/2023 15:01

We’re having beef, too.

im having melon and Parma ham and DP is having posh pate and toast.

Dessert is Christmas pudding, with cream, and /or whatever is in the fridge… trifle, cheesecake, fruit etc.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 08/12/2023 15:01

Starters choice of

Salmon mousse
Prawn cocktail
Melon
Pate

Desert

Profiteroles with hot chocolate sauce
Jelly and ice cream

booksandbrooks · 08/12/2023 15:10

No starter here, but if we were it would be baked goats cheese, with beetroot, walnut, rocket & watercress & balsamic

Pudding may well be quality street, Terry's chocolate orange & cheeseboard, but the plan is sticky syrupy poached pears and caramel ice cream.

Newestname002 · 08/12/2023 15:14

I'm having smoked salmon with avocado to start, plus either ripe Julie mango or magnum classic (or both!) for dessert. 🌹

SantasPronounsAreHeAndHim · 08/12/2023 16:51

OMG, your houses sound fantastic.

I am loving the Coquilles St. Jacques idea. In fact I had that in my mind, but didn't know the name.

I definitely need to do an M&S shop. Sadly the shop is miles from my house.

We do 2 desserts on Christmas Day. I have one sorted. I am thinking perhaps a Lemon Meringue.

Starters will be more eat it an hour in advance just to keep everyone happy whilst dinner is running late.

This thread has been a joy. I love imagining you all sitting down to your delicious and lovingly planned festive fayre

SantasPronounsAreHeAndHim · 09/12/2023 13:51

So, thanks to you lovely lot, I've just been and done an M&S dash. I have bought the Coquilles St. Jacques for our starters, but I do need some pointers on how I pronounce this for when I put it in front of my guests, expecting them to think I've done a Masterchef.

Also got gorgeous beef gravy, a million small chipolata pigs in blanks (to be Nigella'd)...some, ahem....Snowman Bao Buns, pate for my smorgasbord on Boxing Day, and other gorgeous stuff.

Now I just need to settle on dessert no.2. I've loads of guests on Boxing Day and I think they will stay late, so need a lot of food. I'm doubling up on the dessert for Christmas Day, and I might also make Christmas pudding ice cream and I have loads of individual cardboard tubs for freezing it.

Just cleared and organised my lockdown garage freezer, and as soon as I have stopped procrastinating on here, I am off to make a gazillion mince pies to freeze.

Smoked salmon to start
Xmas pud and Yule log
A fancy cheeseboard comes out around 9pm or whenever we start feeling peckish again.

Scruffington · 09/12/2023 14:26

Cock-ee San Zzzhaques

Clevs · 09/12/2023 14:35

Prawn cocktail to start.
Roast beef and slow cooker gammon in cola for the main.
Slow cooker Christmas pudding for dessert with a choice of Baileys or vanilla cream.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/12/2023 14:42

No starters but smoked salmon triangles and champagne at 11.30 with the presents. Turkey and trimmings then a choc log.

SM4713 · 09/12/2023 14:51

I see you have starters sorted.

For dessert, I was going to suggest a pavlova or lemon meringue. I often make a lemon meringue, but cheat slightly and buy a pre-baked tart case. It just saves the blind baking. Asda do an extra special one for £2.30. They have cheaper ones, but they are often cracked. https://groceries.asda.com/product/pastry-flan-cases/asda-extra-special-all-butter-pastry-case/1000117784442

I use this recipe, but you obviously miss out making the pastry case and just follow the rest. The recipe fits perfectly into the case. You could also add the pulp of 1-2 passionfruit for something different.

weegiemum · 09/12/2023 14:54

We'll have my dad's home smoked trout on blinis with crème fraiche, homemade asparagus soup for starters, and MIL's pavlova for pudding - much later in the day!!

YireosDodeAver · 09/12/2023 14:55

We don't have a "sit down" starter at all. We have smoked salmon and other canapes during pre-lunch present-opening. If we had a starter too we wouldn't have room for pudding.

Pudding is Christmas Pud and mince pies. V traditional. Sometimes we will crack into the yule log though that is supposed to wait till tea time.

gotomomo · 09/12/2023 14:56

No starter unless a selection box with quality chasers count

BrimfulOfMash · 09/12/2023 15:01

Cockee san jak (j as in that French j sound in ‘jouzsch up ‘)

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 09/12/2023 15:09

Posh pate chutney and toast, or stuffed large mushrooms.

Beef for main. Still do pigs in blankets too.

Christmas pudding or sticky toffee pudding.

SkankingWombat · 09/12/2023 21:37

Don't be embarrassed about the snowmen bao buns OP! Those are awesome and on my shopping list too, as soon as I have made room in the freezer. They have non-festive panda and unicorn versions too, which my DCs love.

waltzingparrot · 09/12/2023 21:42

No starter
Lemon Posset with raspberry shortbread

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 09/12/2023 21:42

Starter undecided but small and easy. Pudding either Christmas pud or a fruit roulade.

Flibbertigibbettytoes · 09/12/2023 21:56

Smoked trout blinis then some chilli prawn thing I saw in the good food magazine.
No pudding but there'll be a cheeseboard later.
