Having relatives over on Boxing Day and they LOVE cheese, don't want to buy one of those pre-packed plastic looking mixture of cheeses you get in the supermarkets, can you help?

I did find a lovely Normandie Camembert at the local market so i will be buying more of that, but what else?

gorgonzola

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 17/12/2004 21:24

Wenslydale with cranberries is a fave of mine.

bigbananaflambe · 17/12/2004 21:24

a nice creamy goats cheese always goes down well. Also block of parmesan is yummy

MancMum · 17/12/2004 21:26

and a proper stilton in jar that you ripen yourself... mine is singing to me from teh kitchen.. bottle of port...

don't forget the proper accompniements.... oat crackers, celery, grapes, all served ice cold

Is there a proper cheese shop near you... far better than the plastic stuff from supermakrets?

moondog · 17/12/2004 21:29

Hey girl, you should be posting on the foodie thread!
Remember, less is more. Three or four real crackers would do it. Stilton, obviously, a goat's cheese, a hard cheese and maybe one quirky numer for novelty.

StuffTheMagicTurkey · 17/12/2004 21:29

I luurve dolcelatte, very very crumbly, strong farmhouse cheddar and roquefort.

spacedonkey · 17/12/2004 21:30

drool

StuffTheMagicTurkey · 17/12/2004 21:31

Some small apples eg cox's are nice too, especially with a v strong cheddar.

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 17/12/2004 21:36

a good strong blue cheese
a nice mature cheddar
Milder cheese like a cheshire
goats cheese

seedless grapes

and GOOD crackers

spacedonkey · 17/12/2004 21:37

water biscuits and oat cakes are my favs

SenoraPostrophe · 17/12/2004 21:37

I´m not particularly cheesy - can only eat a small lump of stilton and hate really stinky cheeses...

but my faves are manchego (slice it and put in olive oil - otherwise it goes all rubbery very quickly. plus olive oil adds to the taste) and smoked cheddar.

dh (big cheese lover) says Stilton, and lots of it.

spacedonkey · 17/12/2004 21:38

a nice young manchego with apples and walnut bread .... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

SenoraPostrophe · 17/12/2004 21:40

sd - I have about 15 types of manchego in the fridge. No walnut bread though

spacedonkey · 17/12/2004 21:40
Envy
jinglebelljodee · 17/12/2004 22:39

Ooooh, am salivating!

Thanks for the great ideas - never heard of Manchego, but you are all raving about it so it must be out of this world.

Yummmmmmmm !

Stilton definitely. Colston Bassett is my favourite (DD and I treat ourselves from the Cheese Shop in Nottingham).

CountessDingDongDrac · 17/12/2004 22:59

Where do you live Jinglebelljodee? If you're in London go to Neal's Yard in Covent Garden, they do the best cheese (all british) and will advise you - if you don't, you can order online here and they do selections too.

If they like stinky stuff, tis the season for vacherin! Other faves for me are Reblochon, Beaufort (v simlar to Comte), Manchego, Waitrose do a really good aged Caerphilly that is fantastic with grapes or apples. Slobber...

fairydust · 17/12/2004 23:07

chilli cheese is my fav

SueW · 17/12/2004 23:12

Not one of my favourites but a regular on cheeseboards I've done menus for is Hereford Hop

LunarSeasonsGreetings · 18/12/2004 08:57

"Real" Wensleydale (the type which comes as a small whole cheese wrapped in Muslin) if you can find it (probably needs to be from a specialist cheese shop, or at least a very good deli). It should be slightly squashy to the touch, and if you happen to get a choice get the one with the longest sell by date as it's best really fresh. Totally different to the Wensleydale you usally get pre cut and wrapped - the real thing at it's best is almost a soft cheese.

Add something blue (stilton or roquefort), something stronger (a good cheddar is fine for this, or something like a Beaufort, Comte or a Tomme if you can find them), a soft cheese (we like Epoisses which Sainsbury's have got this year although it's usually hard to find here) and/or a goats cheese.

Add grapes, celery, walnuts (unless you have walnut bread), good crackers or oat cakes and/or bread (walnut is good with cheese).

Oh and if your friends are really cheese lovers, they'll probably prefer cheeses which aren't adulterated with cranberries, apricots or whatever!

LizP · 18/12/2004 19:01

Use your xmas cake too - good cheddar or wenslydale with fruit cake is wonderful.

happymerryberries · 18/12/2004 19:05

Ooh, agree with lots of the cheese choices. Don't forget to add some medjool dates......wonderful with cheese and also some very ripe pears if you can get them this time of year. Grainy ripe pear with blue cheese! Swoon!

posyhairdresser · 18/12/2004 19:28

Get some quince jelly to serve with the cheese for a special treat!

Go and take some advice & do some tasting at a specialty cheese shop! Four cheeses is a good number - just choose different types and have a great time!

posyhairdresser · 18/12/2004 19:28

And find a special wine or 2 to compliment the cheeses!
