My daughter will be 9 next week. She'd like a pretty birthday cake, but without icing, frosting or cream as she doesn't like them. She also doesn't like chocolate or fruit cake. Any suggestions?!

Would a lemon drizzle be okay? Less icing-y drizzle

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 15/10/2023 15:20

A blondie tray bake?

Defiantlynot41 · 15/10/2023 15:22

Victoria sandwich with raspberry or strawberry jam

Bit random but coffee & walnut or date & walnut, I loved these when I was a kid

Croquembouche type tower of profiteroles with caramel topping and creme patisserie filling (or Paris-Brest which is a ring of profiteroles on a puff pastry base, very fancy)

Betty's of Harrogate French fancies (they have icing, I hate icing but love them)

Lemon drizzle with lemon curd filling (like Nadia Hussain wedding cake)

Banana bread
Apple loaf
Middle Eastern orange and polenta cake
Date and walnut loaf (might be a step too far if she doesn't like fruit cake
Madeira cake
Jamaican ginger cake

What flavours does she enjoy?

You could make a pretty top to the cake by sifting icing sugar on through a doily or other lacy template. .

Nuts, candied peel, or edible flowers would be other decorative options, with a big ribbon round the side?

fishfingersandtoes · 15/10/2023 15:28

For prettiness what about a cake with little toy figures on it? You can get animals or fairies or Disney characters etc...
You can also get premade rice paper decorations or stick sweets that she likes on top.

She's likes Victoria sponge, vanilla, lemon cake, orange. I am wondering how to make it pretty for her!

I have just thought perhaps I could lay some shapes on top of the cake, such as stars or flowers, sieve dust some icing sugar over, lift the stars / flowers off, to leave the shapes.

I made this last year, but she would like less frosting.

Pavlova?

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 15/10/2023 15:35

Yes why not look at options on Etsy or somewhere for inspiration?

Shakenbutbarelystirred · 15/10/2023 15:36

Maybe use a mould? Either the number 9, or a castle, or animal, or whatever you can get your hands on?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/10/2023 15:36

Pineapple upside down cake?

Oblomov23 · 15/10/2023 15:40

Last years cake looks lovely. Do exactly the same but skim off most of the frosting.

Poppins2016 · 15/10/2023 15:45

You could make a wreath out of edible (or fake) flowers. Alternatively, just push the flowers into the cake.

A special and very pretty alternative to dusting with icing sugar would be using some cake glitter (you can find it in some supermarkets, Lakeland or specialist cake shops).

If you have a look online you can find acrylic "happy birthday" cake toppers and candelabra style candle holders which are very pretty and would add something special (plus they can be reused, very handy).

Does she eat chocolate? A vanilla cake with melted chocolate and sweets on top?

Daffyyellow · 15/10/2023 16:58

The problem with dusting a cake (with icing sugar or glitter) is blowing the topping away as you blow out candles. Ask me how a I know . . . .!

TheSpottedZebra · 15/10/2023 17:12

A small bit of heated jam on on top to stick sprinkles on in the shape of her age, or in a pretty border?

Or make a lego scene on top?
Or a Barbie scene?

Or anything else she likes, plonk it on top!

TheSpottedZebra · 15/10/2023 17:14

A photo cake?

Or buy some ridiculously ornate cake candle and just have that?

Do a ring cake and fill the middle with her favourite sweets, or whatever else she likes?

greenmarsupial · 15/10/2023 17:17

We had a 'naked' wedding cake which looked very effective (pic not ours!). You could do two layers and have fruit/ flowers/ toys on it. You can get some lovely cake toppers on eBay.

lemon curd on the top in the shape of a butterfly and then icing sprinkled leaving butterfly shapes bare

caerdydd12 · 15/10/2023 17:37

Have you seen the chocolate cakes with chocolate fingers lining the outside? You could do something similar. Let me see if I can find a photo..

Just get a cake topper. Or bake the sponge with sprinkles through it.

Wonder if I could make a marble cake but with coloured mix rather than chocolate and vanilla?
