My daughter will be 9 next week. She'd like a pretty birthday cake, but without icing, frosting or cream as she doesn't like them. She also doesn't like chocolate or fruit cake. Any suggestions?!

You could cover the cake in something else. Pineapple flowers or candied lemons, chocolate shards (that she can remove) then fill the top with raspberries or something she likes.

Wonder if I could make a marble cake but with coloured mix rather than chocolate and vanilla?

You can absolutely make a marble cake with food colouring rather than chocolate/vanilla... however, something to consider is that cakes made with food colouring are fairly golden/dull on the outside and are only vibrant when cut (which defeats the object of making it coloured for aesthetics pre-cutting).

Jam/lemon curd and desiccated coconut?

Maybe a chocolate marble in a Bundt ring - then you can either drizzle some chocolate over it or out fruit in the middle as a decoration?

If she likes almonds, my go to cake is Lisa Faulkner's fantasy cake which I make with raspberries. Then scattered with flakes almonds on top and dusted with icing sugar just before serving. It's so pretty and girly in a subtle way. It was my birthday cake this year :)

Blondies or lemon drizzle

Not suggesting fireman sam for a 9 year old but I made this for my 5 year old who was exactly the same. Liked jam Victoria sponge but no frosting, icing, buttercream etc. I melted fox's fruits in the oven to make the shards so you could do a similar thing to make almost like an aurora borealis type scene around the cake?

Bear with me on this....

I used to make chocolate cakes and fill and "ice" them with Angel Delight. Sounds weird but works really well. Makes them super moist.

What about jam, loosened with a little boiling water, on a pastry brush on the top of a sponge cake to be sticky enough to allow hundreds&thousands to stick to it. You could do it in stripes of different types maybe.

Another idea - search Pinterest for cake bunting - I've previously made paper triangles on string, hung between two wooden skewers with the birthday child's name written on it. Looked lovely (imo 😆)

Pile fruit and edible flowers on top?

Mini donuts on top of cake?

APurpleSquirrel · 16/10/2023 19:39

What about a Bundt cake or Giant Cookie?

Bundt:

Giant Cookie:

Or a mountain of tray bakes?

Flimpychunk · 16/10/2023 19:45

How about a rainbow cake, with the caramelised edges cut off so they reveal the bright colours?

Flimpychunk · 16/10/2023 19:48

Something like this but with less icing/different fillings in between?

Or you could do a Daffodil Cake:

Ellmau · 18/11/2023 19:19

Would edible flowers be an option?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/11/2023 21:01

Do a victoria sponge with jam in the middle and put lots of sweets on the top.
