WTF can I do with 3 bags of mixed nuts that are about to go out of date that's not nut roast?

DH buys them when he's starting a "health kick" and never eats them.

They're about to go out of date. The kids have nut allergies. 🙄

Has anyone got any recipes that would use them up and I can take to work so they don't go to waste?

They'll last for ages after the date on the package, they don't suddenly go off on the day. Can you just eat a handful every day from now until next Easter?

eandz13 · 07/10/2023 14:29

Granola - eat it for dessert/breakfast with yoghurt and berries
Mixed nut cookies
Fruit and nut loaf cake
Nut butter

They won't suddenly go off if they're sealed though

Although nuts certainly have good nutrients and fats, they are incredibly high in calories! Unless he is doing keto, I wouldn't think packets of nuts would be the best!

That aside. Can you cook/use them in the house if the kids have allergies??? Are they salted or plain?😕

  • I was going to say advertise them on olio and give them away.
  • Chop and use some in a crumble topping.
  • Pecan pie? I often make it with a mix of pecan and walnuts- depending what I have.
  • Home-made nut bars
  • Flapjacks with nuts
TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/10/2023 14:32

Don't even worry about it - the nuts will be fine if you just use them bit by bit.

bengalcat · 07/10/2023 14:32

They’ll keep well past their sell/use by date ….. no recipes but squirrels ? I regularly buy nuts from Waitrose for those that come into our garden

Rattyname · 07/10/2023 14:35

Are they shelled and peeled? You could roast them and grind them into mixed nut butter

CinnamonBear · 07/10/2023 14:36

Freeze them and use as needed

ForthegracegoI · 07/10/2023 14:37

You can freeze nuts and just use them a little at a time

greenacrylicpaint · 07/10/2023 14:38

I would make a crumble.
use the nuts, chopped instead of oats/flour in the topping.

RoseAndRose · 07/10/2023 14:39

Depending on how short the date, give them to your local food bank. They're a good, nutritious and calorie-dense snack.

Rainbowshit · 07/10/2023 14:39

One is already dated June 2022. 🙄

They're taking up space that I could do with so want rid of them.

The kids will be fine with any cooking being done. They just won't be able to eat any of it.

I don't want to eat any of them as I'm trying to lose weight. Hence trying to get rid of them to colleagues in potentially cake form.

They're plain mixed nuts.

Make your Xmas cake

autumniscomingsoon · 07/10/2023 14:42

Not got any cooking suggestions but if they're not salted or dry roasted could you maybe put them out for the birds?

AdaColeman · 07/10/2023 14:42

Make roasted spiced nuts with them. Quick and easy, and ideal for nibbles with drinks at this time of year. Caramelised nuts are another idea, but a little more complicated to do, lovely with a glass of port and some cheese! Wine Wine

shockeditellyou · 07/10/2023 14:48

Bombay nuts or spiced nuts.

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 07/10/2023 14:50

Feed the birds and squirrells

Glovesandscarf · 07/10/2023 14:50

Thomasina doodah’s spiced nuts. V easy & quick and imagine quicker in an air fryer

rainbowstardrops · 07/10/2023 15:00

Oh I love a nice nut roast. With chilli tomato sauce (homemade) on top completely misses the point of the thread

ZiriForEver · 07/10/2023 15:06

Can't you just bring them to work exactly as they are and offer to colleagues? Either opening a package there and letting everyone who wants to take some, or just marking the whole package as free to grab?
Your childs allergy is great explanation (the volume of nuts consumed at your home is much lower than expected, due to an allergy)

muddyford · 07/10/2023 16:01

Nutty flapjacks?

SallyWD · 07/10/2023 16:04

They'll he fine after the date! I add them to salad and cereal/porridge. I mostly just eat a handful as a snack.

bellac11 · 07/10/2023 16:06

Make into pastes and use in currys and theres an persian aubergine dip thing Ive made before with walnuts but probably nice with any nuts

EveryOtherNameTaken · 07/10/2023 16:09

@Riverpebble
Great idea.

MariePaperRoses · 07/10/2023 16:12

Have a morning or afternoon out over the woods and leave nuts for the squirrels. Don't scatter on the ground.

You can place them in feeders and hang from branches so that the birds can have access too.

Don't feed in urban areas
