Are there any positives left to bacon?

Apart from the taste!?

It obviously has a lot of negative press, since it is processed and the links to bowel disease, etc, but it does contain protein and iron Grin.
I don't like pork in other forms but fancy something different maybe once per week?
I was thinking about nitrate free bacon, with salad on sourdough. I would ideally prefer organic but good luck sourcing a nitrate free version of that.

So much messaging about good/bad food in general now it's often dizzying!

Can easily live without it but since I haven't eaten it in years I do flirt with the idea. Do you eat it, and if so, what are your thoughts?

It’s delish

DelurkingAJ · 06/10/2023 22:00

I think that all things in moderation is the way forward.

Boundoverbyacat · 06/10/2023 22:00

Imagine overthinking your life to this extent!!!

minipie · 06/10/2023 22:01

Well, my kids will eat things like spinach soup if it has a little bacon sprinkled on top. I figure it’s worth the trade off 🤷‍♀️

(I do try to buy nitrite free but that is a fairly recent change)

Notlaughingalot · 06/10/2023 22:02

Bacon is great. Especially with fried eggs and tomato. Or in a bacon sarnie.

MidnightOnceMore · 06/10/2023 22:02

I'm vegetarian, so I don't eat it myself. But I think if I wanted to I would eat it occasionally because whilst we do know it's unhealthy, so are many things.

Moonshine5 · 06/10/2023 22:09

You can buy nitrate free in Marks, Sainsbury's and Waitrose

Sparehair · 06/10/2023 22:20

I eat it pretty much daily 🤣. My standard breakfast is sourdough with avocado and streaky bacon ( unsmoked) and a fried tomato. I don’t have many risk factors for cancer so I’ll take my chances.

SchubertsTroutWashingMachine · 06/10/2023 22:22

Nowt wrong with a bit of overthinking delicious foods!

What do we call moderation though, this is the question? Grin
If I bought a pack, would last two meals (going off the naked bacon pack for reference). Once a week is reasonable in my perfect universe life is so short, not that I want it to get any shorter, mind!

I would imagine this is good for mental health so it all balances up Grin

Exactly this!

I generally substitute halloumi for bacon though if you are looking for an alternative.

TooMinty · 06/10/2023 22:27

And you can freeze bacon (and halloumi 😆) so no need to eat the whole packet

We eat nak'd bacon a lot

CrashBangWallow · 06/10/2023 22:33

I do t think it being nitrate free makes any difference from a bowel cancer risk point of view. As others have said everything in moderation which for me would be once a month not week.

Sad news, indeed. This is probably why I don't tend to buy it as a rule. The memories of how lovely it is haunt me sometimes! Life isn't fair at all. If it wasn't such a loaded gun I would eat it twice a week at least.

I know someone who eats sausages almost every day of the week. He's a picky eater and somehow manages to stay strong and healthy, but you do wonder. I suppose like many risk factors (booze, cigarettes), some people will sail by with ease, whilst other's very much don't.

SchubertsTroutWashingMachine · 06/10/2023 22:41

He is 74 so likely has bowels of steel Grin

Try curing your own, it’s really easy, if you go on Amazon you can buy all the ingredients you need, just be careful which you buy some do contain nitrates but they are clearly labelled, and go for the dry cure salts not soak. Honestly a piece of loin turns into the best bacon ever in a week.

sipsqueak · 06/10/2023 22:50

So you're about to fall off the bacon wagon.

Honestly it's fine. Life is short so just eat the bacon.

devildeepbluesea · 06/10/2023 22:52

Mmmm bacon 😋

TheChosenTwo · 06/10/2023 22:57

We eat a lot of bacon, ds does enjoy a bacon sarnie for breakfast (not every day but twice a week). Nitrate free is fairly easy to get hold of now, I’m not sure if it has always been the case but I wasn’t looking for it 5+ years ago.

SchubertsTroutWashingMachine · 06/10/2023 23:05

So, as a pp said about nitrate free still being linked to cancer, what is the reason? I should probably do a bit of research but every bloody website or authority says something different.

I need to step away from the pork fantasies...

My OP was concerning me wanting to up my protein intake. I have a bad reaction to beans/pulses due to IBS so meat is easiest for me. I currently eat only fish so am looking for a tasty addition to my weekly diet. Monthly won't be good enough, lol.
