Are there any positives left to bacon?

Apart from the taste!?

It obviously has a lot of negative press, since it is processed and the links to bowel disease, etc, but it does contain protein and iron Grin.
I don't like pork in other forms but fancy something different maybe once per week?
I was thinking about nitrate free bacon, with salad on sourdough. I would ideally prefer organic but good luck sourcing a nitrate free version of that.

So much messaging about good/bad food in general now it's often dizzying!

Can easily live without it but since I haven't eaten it in years I do flirt with the idea. Do you eat it, and if so, what are your thoughts?

Funnily enough I was discussing this with a friend the other day. We're both smokers, and therefore decided that bacon is the least of our worries. So one positive thing about bacon is that it's not cigarettes.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/10/2023 09:25

It gets my teens out of bed on a weekend

lljkk · 07/10/2023 09:45

I think the risk is exaggerated. It can have a place in a healthy diet.

Haha that's so funny!😂

OP, have a bacon and avocado toasted sandwich ( my breakfast this morning, yum), protein and healthy fats, enjoy and stop worrying!

SchubertsTroutWashingMachine · 07/10/2023 12:49

Thank you everyone, I have purchased some Nakd stuff and will enjoy with toast! Will keep an eye on my consumption Blush

I'm not sure how one would give up bacon. I've just enjoyed a bacon butty on cheap white bread with tomato ketchup. It was delicious!

Our family seem to use bacon as a seasoning. Everything is better with bacon.

I eat it pretty much daily 🤣. My standard breakfast is sourdough with avocado and streaky bacon ( unsmoked) and a fried tomato. I don’t have many risk factors for cancer so I’ll take my chances.

That sounds so delicious I'm prepared to risk it.

BlackForestCake · 07/10/2023 13:36

“Nitrate free” bacon isn’t actually nitrate free. It is “cured” with celery extract, which contains nitrates which is why it works.

Hbh17 · 07/10/2023 13:50

I eat it now and then. It's lovely, so why would I stop? You can't cut out all allegedly harmful foods. We all die eventually, and life is for living, so let's all enjoy what we can.

I was offered bacon as a sort of salt on macaroni cheese at an amusement park recently.... the best amusement Park fast food I have ever had!!!

We do not eat a lot of bacon but I wouldn't dream of cutting it out. I think it's ridiculous to be so terrified of it and all the anti bacon/sausage/ham/cured meat gang are way ott.

caringcarer · 07/10/2023 14:11

The taste in sandwiches 🤤.

SchubertsTroutWashingMachine · 07/10/2023 14:14

so how does celery extract cause cancer? I wish i knew more about the mechanics of these things.

bacon is great for those who wish to reduce meat consumption.
a small amount gives great flavour to mainly vegetable dishes.

CeeChynaa · 07/10/2023 14:38

Eating pork is interesting because it really does come from such a dirty animal. Especially because of how pigs are kept and cared for. I eat pork btw so I’m not looking down on anyone but I really try not too😅

I enjoy turkey bacon rashers way more than standard bacon though. Bit more pricier but it tastes more healthier too!

Boundoverbyacat · 07/10/2023 16:44

@CeeChynaa what are you talking about? Pigs aren’t dirty animals? From Nat Geo

Despite their reputation, pigs are not dirty animals. They’re actually quite clean. The pig’s reputation as a filthy animal comes from its habit of rolling in mud to cool off. Pigs that live in cool, covered environments stay very clean.

bellac11 · 07/10/2023 16:53

Even if pigs were 'dirty', you're not eating their outsides, you're eating their insides.

greenacrylicpaint · 07/10/2023 17:18

and if by 'dirty' you mean 'smelly' well, goats/sheep (especially the males) are quite smelly as well.

CeeChynaa · 07/10/2023 17:19

Pigs are absolutely disgusting. From their living environment to what they eat and what their insides are filled with. You only have to do some research or watch a documentary or two. I know ignorance is bliss and all but this is something that really can’t be denied

This.
I've got nothing against pigs, think they're pretty cute actually, but they're absolutely filthy and nobody can paint a picture otherwise.

What with this thread and the one about black pudding, I really fancy a big fry up now 😋

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2023 17:29

OP have you heard of the 80/20 rule? Basically what you do 80% of the time is what matters. Get that right and you don't need to worry about the 20%, which is your moderation.

If you eat 3 meals a day, which is a dangerous assumption because my observations show that many Mumsnetters shower more times a day than they eat, that would allow you to eat bacon on 20% of 21 occasions a week. Which is just over 4 meals a week.

So your proposed 1 or 2 meals a week containing bacon are less than that, so crack on and don't worry about it.

We're having barbecued sausages when DP gets home from work, so double whammy of processed pork cooked until it is coated in acrylamide.

So there's no hope for us, especially as we'll probably have them in white bread rolls with ketchup and a beer or two as well.
