No dairy/nightshade veg pasta sauce. Does it exist?

My little one, 1yr old, has dairy intolerance and also intolerance to nightshade vegetables ( potato, sweet potato, onion, pepper, tomato) he will eat pasta but I can't find a sauce that doesn't contain at least 2 of these ingredients. Anybody know of a sauce I could buy or make that is actually tasty and doesn't contain these vegetables? Know it's a long shot but am hoping someone has come up with their own recipe as I'm a terrible cook so don't really want to try myself and make the baby Ill 😆 thank you in advance

Dairy-free pesto? Probably nicer if you make your own

Devilsmommy · 21/09/2023 16:34

@Switchingoff thanks for that, I honestly didn't think of pesto and thank you for killing two birds with one stone for me as I was also thinking about how on earth I was going to do pizza but you've saved me😁 love pesto based pizza

Asds do a nice vegan macaroni cheese.

KirstenBlest · 21/09/2023 16:37

Do a search for 'non-tomato non-dairy pasta sauce'. Mine had a few tomato-free ones in the results

Butternut squash sauce? Vegan dairy alternatives?

PerspiringElizabeth · 21/09/2023 16:38

Yes, google ‘AIP friendly marinara sauce’

3Tunes · 21/09/2023 16:38

creamy sauce made with soya cream - I do mushroom and bacon (fry bacon and mushrooms, stir in Alpro single soya cream at the end) but bacon might be a bit salty for a baby.

Roast Courgettes with olive oil are good with pasta. Ditto slightly overcooked broccoli, or roast carrot chunks.
Fennel and sardines with olive oil make a very nutritious pasta dressing. If you ditch the fennel and just have the broccoli and sardines then it's really cheap as well.

Also sweet potatoes aren’t nightshades OP, so that might open things up a tad for you.

Maplestars · 21/09/2023 16:39

i think you can make creamy sauces with things like cashew or avocado - there will be lots of vegan recipes
can you do pumpkin/butternut squash (and sage?) sauces?
-home made vegan pesto, can also do alternative pestos like spinach or courgette or pistachio pesto
-just roast any veggies he can eat and likes, and put them on some pasta with olive oil.
-A lemon and garlic sauce goes well with fish too

a quick google offered up various nightshade free, vegan recipes https://www.yummly.co.uk/recipe/NOmato-Sauce-Nightshade-Free-Pasta-Sauce-9267713

obviously you can then add protein as you want
Depends how adventurous he is though!

You could try olive oil and blitzed up spinach (use frozen, cleaning fresh is too much effort with a baby). Should taste quite nice.

Butternut squash sauce? Vegan dairy alternatives?

Agree with this. I used to get a tin of chunky butternut squash soup and use a few tablespoons as pasta sauce :)

cherryassam · 21/09/2023 16:40

I find the Oatly oat fraiche really good for creamy pasta sauces

mynameiscalypso · 21/09/2023 16:41

I make one where I steam broccoli until mushy and then crush it up with some stock/pasta water and some Parmesan (you could use vegan alternatives!

Fizzology · 21/09/2023 16:41

Something like a thicker version of butternut squash/carrot/sweet potato soup. You could add coconut milk, too.

Red lentils, like a very mild dahl?

Pinkdelight3 · 21/09/2023 16:42

I'm an absolutely dreadful cook and even I could muster a veggie pasta sauce. It's not gonna harm your baby and will be healthier than bought sauces.

Maggierhee1 · 21/09/2023 16:43

Vegan pesto

Without tomato? Do share this exceptionally easy, extremely obvious recipe with the rest of us terrible cooks! 😁

Lots of Italian sauces using olive oil, lemon and herbs and garlic and golden breadcrumbs .

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/09/2023 16:46

Nadia Hussein has a nice beetroot pasta sauce. It’s prepacked cooked beetroot whizzed up with oil Ive oil and garlic and seasoning. It’s really tasty and PINK!

SisterMichaelsHabit · 21/09/2023 16:47

Tesco do a dairy free white lasagne sauce and I think ASDA have one as well.
SACLA do a non dairy "ch££se" sauce that you can get in some shops as well but it's a bit of an acquired taste and a one year old might not like it, as is their vegan carbonara sauce.

You're going to be feeding this child for many years, I suggest you learn how to be a mother who does not depend on pre-prepared/processed food. YouTube is your friend. Get a mini blender and learn how to cook.

Apart from berating the OP do you have any good recipes she could try?

SummaLuvin · 21/09/2023 16:55

not sure if garlic is also one to avoid? But this is another recipe I love, it is highly adaptable and even if you have the skip the garlic I think it would taste good.
