How do you cook corn on the cob?

I'm so hit and miss with this. I've boiled it, microwaved it, airfryered it and oven roasted it. Sometimes it's delicious, sometimes it's just not.

Do you have a foolproof way?

I massage it with butter sprinkle with salt, pepper and chilli flakes and then roast it.

Pleaseme · 03/09/2023 13:54

I boil it for ten minutes. Then rub it with butter and salt and put in Airfryer for five minutes to finish.

Unmute · 03/09/2023 13:57

I just chuck it in the oven for 30ish minutes. Either with the husk still on, or wrapped in foil.

Doggydarling · 03/09/2023 13:58

Being hit and miss might be caused by how old it is. It has to be absolutely fresh to taste sweet, if its fresh it'll taste good no matter how its cooked. I try to pick it and cook within a few hours at the most, I know this isn't possible for most so check for freshness when buying if you can.

I cook ours on a gas hob, turning every few seconds till it's starting to go black, then smother with butter. It tastes lovely.

BlackberryCrumbs · 03/09/2023 13:59

Rub it with butter, sprinkle with salt, wrap individually in foil then stick in the oven.

Steam and airfry in the Ninja. Delicious 😋

Sameold23 · 03/09/2023 14:02

In foil in the oven for 10 mins

MissConducUS · 03/09/2023 14:03

Steam it for 10 minutes.

1AnotherOne · 03/09/2023 14:04

Wrap it in tinfoil with some butter and salt and pepper and air fry for 18 mins

Turquoisa80 · 03/09/2023 14:05

I put it in the microwave for 4mins..turn over and then for another 3-4mins and season. Dh likes to roast over hob

OneLittleFinger · 03/09/2023 14:08

Lay on clingfilm, start to roll it up then add tablespoon water. Finish wrapping and tuck the end around (so it's fully enclosed and the water can't escape. Microwave for 3bmins, then check if it's done. 30 sec intervals until its ready.

BBQ or griddle pan is the best imo. Its a bit tasteless just boiled. Lots of butter and black pepper

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/09/2023 14:19

Boil it for about 10 mins until the colour changes. Alternatively char grilled on the gas and then sprinkle salt, chilli flakes and lemon juice

Fussy picking of fresh bicolored corn vs the commercial stuff for animal consumption. So first step is knowing your source.
peel and boil 7 minutes, drain add the salt and butter to the pot and roll till covered.

wetpebbles · 03/09/2023 14:26

Microwave 3-5 mins

Theoldwoman · 03/09/2023 14:28

Microwave in its skin? For 1 minute, peel, a knob of butter, salt and pepper. Delicious!

Walkingtheplank · 03/09/2023 14:29

Put it in the oven with whatever else is cooking should take 20-25 minutes. I like it to gave gone brown, even a tiny bit black. Then it tastes really nutty.

Absolutely no butter!

The best way to cook it is on the BBQ thought.

Gogogosh · 03/09/2023 14:29

Stab two holes in the packet and whack them in the microwave for 4 minutes, then rinse under the tap.

I think they're hit and miss depending on the season. If we end up with pretty bland ones that everyone has taken a bite of and doesnt like, I cut the rest of the kernels off and keep them to use in a recipe like chilli or soup.

I buy the frozen cobs all year round. Microwave from frozen 9mins 30 secs in a pyrex bowl with a splash of water and clingfilm on top. Always spot on. Roll in butter and sprinkle with garlic salt. My favourite veg.

Just leave it in its husk and do this. You don’t need plastic or water. The corn contains water (that’s how you get popcorn) and the layers of husk keep the steam in.

This is true. I live in the Southern US, and the old saying used to be "start your water boiling, then go pick and shuck your corn."

For corn not that fresh (which is going to be most), we get the water boiling, add a couple of tablespoons of sugar, boil for 8 minutes, and serve with butter and salt. I also like pepper on mine.

morelippy · 03/09/2023 15:00

I completely agree re the freshness. My late dad used to grow it.. it was picked and eaten within half an hour and I've never tasted any like it since.

I'm roasting a chicken so will try the wrapped in foil method today.

Thanks for your replies!

Best way apparently is microwave for 2-3 mins in its husk
