Fussy celiac DD

ChimChimeny · 29/08/2023 19:19

DD was very recently diagnosed as celiac so we went to was a yesterday and stocked up o n various food things she likes but so far she doesn't like the wraps or cheese crackers, luckily tolerates the bread, fish fingers and pasta.

Are there any crackers or wraps which actually taste ok/like the real thing?

She's quite fussy with her food anyway & a bit on the underweight side so don't want her eating even less 😔

Sorry that’s not being fussy, most of gluten free versions are pretty bad 😁
You keep trying different brands and be guided by her. Not sure how old she is but even our 3 years was brutally honest on some lovely looking gluten free foods we pushed their way

CMOTDibbler · 29/08/2023 19:35

Wraps are really hard as the GF ones are never soft like the gluten ones. They can also taste really weird. My favourite ones are the Warburtons one (if you have the freezer space you can buy direct from them).
Cheese crackers are a bit hit and miss for me, esp if its the really thin ones she likes. Nairns do some snack pack ones which I like (again, you get the best selection buying direct), or try the Mrs Crimble or M&S ones.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/08/2023 19:36

Schar range is usually pretty tasty, sold in supermarkets and many other places. GF foods are generally very processed though. If you want to bake things it is easy to make cakes and biscuits at home -I use Dove’s Farm GF flour and it works well .
M&S have a good little range , their bread is nice and they do cakes, muffins, crackers.
The biggest risk when out is cross contamination but places are a bit more coeliac aware than they used to be. (Although I still routinely have people put a biscuit on my saucer with coffee when I have had a whole GF meal and told them that I am coeliac).

There are some great bagels you can get online - boss bagel I think they're called
Wraps wide, try the old El Paso corn ones. Naturally gluten free. It's tough though so be kind to her while she adjusts

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 29/08/2023 19:42

If you can get into baking your own Doves Farm flour is amazing. Although we are no longer 100% gluten free I still only use doves farm as it makes the lightest, airiest cakes, pancakes, bread, wraps, tempura etc. much better in taste and better for you than shop bought gf versions.

Everyone loves my gf American pancakes and I only use two ingredients- doves farm flour and Rude health gf oat milk (the one in the green box). Absolutely delicious with maple syrup and butter! 😊

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 29/08/2023 19:43

Sorry and forgot to say my wrap is same 2 ingredients as pancakes but thinner batter and thinner again for Yorkshire's (and no egg in any of these either).

WeWereInParis · 29/08/2023 19:46

Nairns cheese oatcakes taste like mini cheddars - or rather, they taste like what I remember mini cheddars tasting like, but it's been a while since I could eat them.

HDready · 29/08/2023 19:55

I’ve yet to find a decent wrap, they are generally very expensive and have a weird taste/texture. Crackers are better - schar do a cream cracker that is good, and Mrs Crimble crackers are also good. You might be better experimenting and making your own wraps - Laura Strange’s website has some decent recipes.

PricklyMonkey · 29/08/2023 20:00

The Old El Paso GF wraps are the best I have come across so far and are actually quite soft.

ChimChimeny · 29/08/2023 20:32

Thanks everyone, lots of suggestions to try.
shes 11 so unfortunately old enough to know what she’s missing out on 🙁
she’s got a birthday party next week & asked me to make gluten free cake so she can take some so I’ll definitely try Dove farm flour.
I think she’s struggling a lot as well because she doesn’t really have any symptoms & has been (mostly) happily eating gluten then all of a sudden she’s got these gross alternatives.

UniversalTruth · 29/08/2023 20:52

Aw bless her, yes gluten free products can be terrible.

Re cake for the party, Becky Excel Coronation cupcakes are great, if you top with buttercream they would taste very good. Left plain they freeze well so she can defrost one when she wants it.

Coffeaddict · 29/08/2023 20:56

Old el gluten free wraps are the nicest wraps I've found

Crackers are generally a bit meh so I avoid.

Cakes I would go for a specific gf recpie rather then just subbing in gf flour ( it can work but needs some trial and error)

The best cook books I've found are by becky excel. Her how to make anything gf book is a good start with a mix of sweet and savory.

knackeredmumoftwo · 29/08/2023 20:58

Marks and Sparks free from range is excellent - their bread is the only one I eat without toasting - they also make nice cakes / biscuits/ buns etc / and they are no more expensive than other supermarkets - you can order from
Ocado as well - worth having a look

Second the little corn El Paso ones!

Is Dove 's farm.flour in any supermarkets? I've Had a look online but can't find it anywhere except on Freee, but they've got a different brand too

For pancakes try buckwheat flour. Very nice with melted cheese or jam!

UniversalTruth · 30/08/2023 13:00

@ChimChimeny near me you can get it in Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury's in store and for delivery. Search for 'gluten free self raising flour' though, not 'Dove's'.

Dinoboymama · 30/08/2023 13:09

I am an adult and have to go gluten free to under doctor's advice.

I am struggling with that so I can see why a child might also especially if they had no symptoms.

I really hope she adjusts asap and then it becomes second nature.

I tried Warburton's gluten free bread and it tasted like plastic to me, Tesco's gluten free wraps surprised me though.

Amortentia · 30/08/2023 13:19

My only recommendation is a chocolate cake made by Galaxy. It’s so good you wouldn’t believe it’s GF, so ideal for birthdays. However, it’s difficult to find, it’s sometimes available in Sainsbury’s or Morrisons. Sainsbury’s GF sourdough is quite good too.

We’re lucky that we have GF bakers near buy who do decent loaves but they sell out fast. I’m thinking of getting a bread maker to try making my own because supermarket bread etc is so bad.

Lovelydovey · 30/08/2023 13:23

My DB is celiac - I find it much easier to cater for him using naturally GF foods. So making cakes using polenta or ground almonds, and main meals using rice or potatoes. Or cereal bars using GF oats and GF puffed rice.

The substitutes really aren't great....

Lovelydovey · 30/08/2023 13:26

For example - this is a favourite cake, even with gluten eaters.

ChimChimeny · 30/08/2023 13:35

@Amortentia we saw that galaxy cake in asda, good to know.it actually tastes decent. lo

@Dinoboymama DD has eaten the Warburton bread, with fish fingers and ketchup, not sure she'd eat it as a sandwich. I'm going o try the Tesco wraps, and Old El Paso as recommended by others.

@Lovelydovey the difficulty with DD is that she doesn't really like potatoes, except chips 🙄she loves pasta though so I'm glad she will eat Asda GF pasta

Does it taste really coconutty/almond-y? Again two more things DD doesn't like 🙄

Another vote for the corn wraps they are not in the gf section but with the nacho and tortilla kits and other wraps. The best bread we have found is the wharburtons sourdough tiger loaf that you need to slice. Aldi Di nice gf tempura chicken fillets like giant nuggets we have these with sweet and sour sauce and rice or chips or in wraps, we have liked all the m&s food and haven't found it more expensive than other gf ranges. Pad thai Rice noodles are good for stir fry too
