Fussy celiac DD

ChimChimeny · 29/08/2023 19:19

DD was very recently diagnosed as celiac so we went to was a yesterday and stocked up o n various food things she likes but so far she doesn't like the wraps or cheese crackers, luckily tolerates the bread, fish fingers and pasta.

Are there any crackers or wraps which actually taste ok/like the real thing?

She's quite fussy with her food anyway & a bit on the underweight side so don't want her eating even less 😔

Lentil pasta is lovely. I always buy shops own. Very filling though so cook less than you normally would.
Does she like rice? Egg fried rice, risotto, biryani are all cheaper options the whole family can eat.

Old El Paso gluten free wraps are good - not rubbery like most of the other ones.
Nairns gluten free oatcakes and oat biscuits are good - my DS loves the cheesy oatcakes.
I find lots of the shop bought cakes and biscuits dry and too sweet.
There are some good online retailers - Free From Bakehouse and Honeybuns are both good. You can stock up and keep some in the freezer.

Bless her. It's a hard transition to make as an adult never mind as a child.
I got a sample box when I was diagnosed. https://www.glutafin.co.uk/Register/

I don't think I've bought their stuff since so maybe not a recommendation but at least it was free!

I quite like the tiger bread Genius cob bread - Sainburys sell it but Genius is a common brand - expensive though but welcome to Coeliac life!

It's essentially trial and error. Morrisons are particularly good for a wide range of gf food so I'd highly recommend them. And M&S gf range are really nice - when I'm treating myself.

it takes time though. The Morrison's chocolate cake is good if she needs a cake fix. And Magnums are always gf I think if a bit of ice cream will help her with the transition.

Good luck

I agree with the old el paso corn tortillas - they are smaller than normal in case you can't find them!
My children like corn thins / sainsbury's thin corn cakes (green packet by the rice cakes!) instead of sandwiches for lunch. Neither of them like bread but will tolerate Juvela fresh bread for toast. Nairns gluten free cheese oatcakes work as well for packed lunches.
Aldi tempura chicken nuggets / fillets are good. Lidl ordinary hotdogs are gluten free! Lidl also do fake pringles which are gluten free, unlike real pringles!
Nachos are usually okay - doritos are not but supermarket brand versions are mostly fine.

Beware Some brands of coke and squash drinks such as fruit and barley....
Also some chips have a gluten coating🙁

Try go to a free from festival when you can sample and get freebies
Some of the companies do free starter sample packs
Coeliac uk magazine is good for offers etc
Lots good cake recipes online eg becky excell
Freee pancake mix is great american style or crepe

Tanaqui · 30/08/2023 14:35

Nigella's flourless brownies are amazing, my kids used to like them better with the pecans/walnuts left out.
Be careful with the corn tortillas, some are mixed corn and wheat!

Seeline · 30/08/2023 14:45

My DD likes Warburton wraps and their tiger bloomer loaf. She also likes the Be Free pitta breads.
M&S do some crackers that are ok, and Nairn's GF cheese oatcakes are nice.
Schar ciabatta and panini's are useful too - last a while in their packaging.

Bluetoesnewtoes · 30/08/2023 14:47

Be careful with Nairns ad they often contain oats and not every coeliac can tolerate oats even if they are labelled as gluten free

There are some great bagels you can get online - boss bagel I think they're called
Wraps wide, try the old El Paso corn ones. Naturally gluten free. It's tough though so be kind to her while she adjusts

Thank you for that great recommendation for Boss Bagels.

The only decent wraps are the old El Paso soft tortillas. They’re tiny and expensive.

My mum bought her some of the chicken fillets which she's having for tea tonight & will get the fish fingers and nuggets next time she goes. The Aldi game Pringles are gluten free too & DD already likes them so that's a positive 😊

One of the first things I checked was our lidl oven chips & they're fine, but the McCain's fries MIL has aren't unfortunately.
MIL has been to M&S and bought a pizza and lasagne to have at hers ready for when we next go round.

@ChimChimeny beware that the Aldi own brand pringles change recipe regularly - sometimes they are gluten free and other times (in exactly the same packaging!!) they contain wheat. Make sure you check each time! The Lidl ones seem to be more consistent - but they don't have salt and vinegar.... Any time we go near an aldi we have to check just in case they have salt and vinegar AND they are gluten-free 😊

Is Dove 's farm.flour in any supermarkets? I've Had a look online but can't find it anywhere except on Freee, but they've got a different brand too

Sainsburys and Asda sell it.

For the cupcakes try this recipe:

6 oz doves farm flour
6oz butter
6oz sugar
3 eggs
Vanilla essence

So light and fluffy. With buttercream on top my cupcakes were always the class favourite when my dd was little. They're honestly way lighter and nicer than wheat ones. And I had my pancakes this morning - just the flour and oat milk with butter and maple syrup. Delish!

Hope your daughter gets used to it. The homecooking will pay off as way better than supermarket gf stuff.

Onceuponatime56 · 05/09/2023 19:07

Make sure you follow Becky Excell - she has some amazing recipes. I won’t re commend particular products as it’s a really personal thing. Try all supermarkets for different options and m and s too.
I haven’t found anything I can’t either buy or make in a gluten free version that’s good enough. It’s a tough age but focus on all
the things she can enjoy and try to find some new treats.

ChimChimeny · 10/10/2023 18:31

Does. anyone know of gluten free noodles that are similar to the classic super noodles please? DD has been eating rice noodles but even though I cook them in chicken stock they don't taste of much and she adds salt to make them more palatable😳

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 10/10/2023 18:48

Try some 100% buckwheat noodles and some miso in the stock

MissSmiley · 10/10/2023 22:31

I just wanted to add if you can get a burger from macdonalds without the bun and the chips are GF (take a GF bun with you) it's a nice way to have a normal treat of she likes that kind of thing. It's hard, they don't want to be different

Think itsu do some pot noodle type things, not sure if they’d be ok. Dd takes them on plane journeys but wouldn’t choose to eat them otherwise. But she didn’t like noodles much anyway.

VisaWoes · 10/10/2023 22:37

We make our own pizza now. Always have a bag of Caputo gf pizza flour in the house. Makes about 7 decent size pizzas from one bag. It’s not as hard or fiddly to do as you’d imagine. It’s the only brand of flour which is worth making pizzas with.

pingster · 11/10/2023 09:07

Old el Passo do some corn tortilla wraps that are gluten free but nicer than the ones that you find in the GF food sections. I've found them in Asda and Sainsbury's but they don't always stock them - they live in the Mexican food section. They're smaller than the standard sized ones.

You can also make really easy flatbreads with yoghurt and gf flour (I think I get the recipe from the Doves website). They also make a good gf pizza base.

We do all our baking GF and just substituting GF flour for normal flour usually works fine - add some xanthum gum if the flour doesn't already have it in there. Pastry works well gluten free I find just adding slightly more liquid makes it less crumbly for rolling out. We often make sausage rolls. And for bread try making gluten free soda bread - that generally works better than attempting to make normal bread.
