What is similar in heat to a Korma?

Finally, at the age of 35, managed to get my "hate anything spicy" daughter to try a Korma curry a few weeks ago.

Who'd've thought it - she liked it! And is now keen to try other, mild, curries.

We are generally more of the Rogan Josh / Madras level of curry, so don't really eat the milder ones.

What is similar in heat to a Korma, that we could get her to try next? (Cooking at home, so can't ask the takeaway/restaurant what they would suggest.)

There's a lovely one, annoyingly can't remember the name. It's the same colour as korma but it has pineapple in it so it's quite sweet. Not spicy at all. But it's lovely!!!!

Do you mean Dhansak? That's my favourite ❤️

Malai kofta. My personal fav (and am from india)
Or you could try a South Indian yoghurt based curry called avial.

Annabel karmel does loads of different curries like butter chicken etc. You dont have to blend them and whole family can have. Lots have fruit in too and are delicious. Just Google and recipes are online. Our kids loved a chicken and apricot one and chicken and apple. Can up the sauce gradually too.

We do 1/2 korma paste/ 1/2 mango chutney and marinade chicken and pepper in it and then put on kebab skewers (originally a hello fresh recipe kit, but we do ourselves as so easy and kids love).

Our kids love katsu curry Originally they had in wagamama.

Pineapple one I had as a kid in restaurant was chicken Malaya. Haven't tried with ours yet.

They love peshwari naans (coconut, almond raisins)

Dansak is usually hot! One of my favourites but my kids aren't quite up to this yet. My eldest is probably up to about a mild Thai green curry level and he'd probably love this (he's tried a few Thai sweet chilli crisps and they're his favourite). He's 7.

If you're cooking at home I don't see the problem, just put less chilli into the dish.

This

Even in a restaurant they can adjust the heat if you ask

Dupiaza.

Or do your usual and then add yoghurt / creamed coconut to cool it down.

listsandbudgets · 21/08/2023 06:18

You don't see it that often but Kashmiri is mild. It tends to have fruit in it.

Exactly.

Byriani, butter chicken

My local does a mild and a medium passanda, the medium is quite spicy though.

Sag paneer is usually mild but I know one place where it's super spicey, but everything in that place is.

booksandbrooks · 21/08/2023 12:03

Lau gosht - probably not spelt right but that's a lovely mild curry but also not creamy

RampantIvy · 21/08/2023 12:07

If you are making them from scratch at home you can use any recipe, but just leave out the chilli powder/fresh chillies. Just use the aromatic spices.

GingerIsBest · 21/08/2023 15:22

If she likes the creaminess of a korma, I'll go with the tikka masala or passanda suggestions or butter chicken.

But if you want a tomato based one, just use less heat? I do rogan josh just using spice jars and usually up the heat but if cooking for non-heat-eaters, we just leave it as it comes.

@Farcry66 yes that's it!!! Lovely 😊

Exactly.

This also.

Tandoori chicken is good too - marinade and bake. Chickpea curry also.

Thank you all. Some lovely sounding suggestions to try - for me, as well as my daughter 😊

Not sure if this has been answered but I think it’s called Chicken Malaya and it’s gorgeous!

A Dhansak in our neck of the woods has the potential to blow your head off! It's also my favourite, but I've never had a mild one and it doesn't have the same creamy colour as a korma. I've never had pineapple in mine either, although I could see it might work and Google tells me it is a hotly debated topic!

I would go with butter chicken as the next choice, but would be simultaneously but gradually increasing the heat in my home cooking too. My DCs are a bit younger, but will eat most medium curries now after a few years of slowly building it up. It has been worth the effort, and they are none the wiser to my underhand methods!
