So how would you pronounce it?

I have always thought that the sausage Chorizo was spanish and should be pronounced Chori-tho (as in Ibiza) but I heard on the telly yestrerday someone calling it Chori-tzo, as in the italian way (as in Pizza) and a friend calls it Choreeesso. What do you think??

Same friend calls Ciabatta - Kie-a-batter. So she's not an authority...

Agree with you sparkybabe, and have it on authority from a couple of fluent Spanish speakers too!

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 13:02

Cher-ritz-o

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 13:03

Though obviously I could be wrong!!

chopster · 27/02/2008 13:03

how do you say ciabatta? Have to admit I pronounce the z, never really thought about it.

Squiffy · 27/02/2008 13:07

I'm with you on this one sparky - it is certainly 'choritho' in the spanish restaurant I go to (run by spaniards).

AdamAnt · 27/02/2008 13:09

I also call it choreetho. Even in the face of raised eyebrows at my ponciness.

sparkybabe · 27/02/2008 13:11

Ciabatta is pronounced cha-batta. It's italian, the same as ciao is pronounced Chow.

My friend pronounces ciabatta as see-a-batta, we've been out to eat and I've said i'll have the cha-batta but she still says it I think she thinks I don't pronounce it right.
She also says scAllops rather than scOllops (for scallops!)

3andnomore · 29/02/2008 20:54

I would pronounce it Choritzo, and Tshabatta for Ciabatta....but I have no idea if I pronounce it correctly, of course...

Mung · 29/02/2008 20:58

ChoriTHO is how they would say it in the majority of Spain, although in the South of Spain and Latin America they don't say the TH sound and it is replced with a SS. So, ChoriTHo and Chorisso are both correct.

Mung · 29/02/2008 20:59

as for Ciabatta...I have no idea.

chocolateshoes · 29/02/2008 21:01

I call it chori -tz-o because I would feel like a nob talking about choreetho and no one would know what I was on about.

I am not familiar with Spanish. I would maybe become nobbish about a French or German pronunciation.

pointydog · 29/02/2008 21:15

oo I say scallops. I think scollops sounds a bit Basil Fawltyish

I say chorizo the way you do sparky and ciabatta the same way as cali!

Kindersurpise · 29/02/2008 21:29

I didn't know about the scollop/scallop thing. Do not eat them anyway.

Got into trouble in an Italian restaurant for ordering a glass of Chee-anti. The snobby waiter corrected me while looking down his nose at me.

Kindersurpise · 29/02/2008 21:30

The Chianti incident was 15 years ago, btw.

pointydog · 29/02/2008 21:30

yes, I had that picture in my head of scallopped paper. Obviously a subject close to your heart. But why promounce the little fishy thing differently? Iz you unhinged?
