Is it worth buying?

don;t know but which watch careful for responses. I am very tempted by any book which promises to make tinned mince into haute cuisine (shameless lazy hussy emoticon)

RubberDuck · 25/02/2008 13:19

I had a flip through it at the bookshop and tempted... but there is a fair few bits in there which still look a bit over fussy. Will be interested in how practical the recipes are in reality.

sparkybabe · 25/02/2008 13:23

There was a thread recently in which the concensus was that she 'recommended' some dubious ingredients - after all most of can find things like breadcrumbs without being directed to buy Waitrose own.
And yes the minced tinned meat with -i think- packet mashed pototes- yuk. I might be making that bit up.

nailpolish · 25/02/2008 13:28

its shite

she recommends tinned mince fgs

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:30

I wouldn;t trust a thread on here to advise me about time saving recipes - it is very looked down upon to use ready meals and frozen mash (which I think is what she actually recommended not packet). I would be interested if he recipes are
a) quick
b) tasty
c) not too full of salt fat and sugar if they use tinned food etc.

I can use my own nouse about whether I buy Waitrose breadcrumbs - I don't care if she plugs specific brands.

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:31

is tinned mince bad then - is it full of salt/sugar? Never looked at a tin but if I thought it might make a decnt quick shepherds pie I would be tempted to keep a tin in the cupboard for when I can't be arsed to load DS into the car for food.

nailpolish · 25/02/2008 13:31

if you want quick and easy meals make an omlette or beans on toast

quicker than any shite ready meal (yuk)

nailpolish · 25/02/2008 13:32

oh kew could you really eat tinned mince?

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/02/2008 13:33

It takes minutes....I mean minutes to brown off fresh mince.....tinned stuff???

I'm a huge Delia fan but if this is what she is spouting in the new book then and

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:35

never tried tinned mince but tinned beands are fine so can';t say I have an objection to it in principal.

Yes prequently have beans on toast but I'm bored with it. Not hugely keen on having omlette as I tend to ccok scrambled eggs at the weekend and I have a toelerance level for eggs which baulks at the idea of more than 2 egg meals a week (don;t knwo why just can't stomach it)

Normally just cook pasta and throw on pasata and cheese but am just bored with it all. Would liek some new ideas for the dasy when fresh food in teh fridge is running low.

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:36

its not the time it takes to brown mince - its not having any in at the end of a week taht tempts me. No idea what tinned mince tasts like but quite like tinned curry - so suspect I am a woman of very low class tastes.

Flier · 25/02/2008 13:36

there was an article on it in one of last weeks sunday newspapers.
1 recipe was for cakes which used frozen discs of mashed potato. I was [shock} at any cook like delia recommending shop bought frozen mashed potato.

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/02/2008 13:37

Kew - could you batch cook and freeze? I do this with DS's meals...not that the little bu**er seems to like anything I give him atm - he's going through a very faddy phase...

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:37

whats wrong with frozen mash? Do you eat frozen peas, fish fingers etc its not any differnt. Freezing is a good way to preserve things without additives.

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:39

yes I do normally batch cook and freeze but have been tired and busy lately so haven't done it much.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 25/02/2008 13:40

It seems a bit rich for Delia to start recommending shortcuts now since IMO her normal books make everything about 50% more complicated than they needed to be in the first place

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/02/2008 13:45

Kew - have you tried the bbc good food magazine site? Once you have registered, you can look for lots of different recipes and put them into an 'online' binder. They have an absolute ton of quick meals using store cupboard standbys and its pretty inventive too

I have my online binder and I last looked at it before.... Xmas.....I think I need to take some of my own advice

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:46

do they have quick and easy recipes for slobs who can actually cook but can't be arsed and would rather play with DS in the time they have to be with him?

nailpolish · 25/02/2008 13:48

ilove the bbc website too

i am making one from it tonight akchewerly

this one

easy peasy

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/02/2008 13:49

Yup! They have a lot of what they call 'midweek suppers' ie can be ready in under 30mins so ideal for people pressed for time. Also have some fab kids recipes if your DS is of the age where you can cook with him. Hope this helps a bit

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:50

can;t have cream and fat enough as it is, would it work wihtout. I'd normally resort to cooking the salmon then getting bored and bunging it in a sandwich.

Flier · 25/02/2008 13:50

frozen mash is just something that I didn't even know even existed. I'd rather boil my own potatoes.

nailpolish · 25/02/2008 13:51

i dont use cream. i use creme fraiche and its just as nice

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 13:51

he likes mixing! I currently have new potatoes all over the kitchen floor and hidden in crevices because he has been "cooking" them on his play cooker

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/02/2008 13:53

That's so cute! DS is fascinated by the food I cook but just doesn't seem to eat the blardy stuff! Although I did come across him putting one of my hearing aid batteries in his mouth the other day (left it out completely by accident btw!) so maybe he just has unusual tastes???!
