Tasty Non-oats based porridge?

JoyApple · 12/07/2023 22:43

Hi

I can't tolerate oats nor gluten but would love to have a warm porridge in the morning

Are there any alternatives that are nutritious and taste nice?

Thanks

I was going to say if it's not oats it's not porridge, but now that I'm here I'm thinking maybe chia seeds soaked in milk?

RampantIvy · 12/07/2023 22:57

Rice pudding?

KnickerlessParsons · 12/07/2023 22:59

Semolina?

Iloveanicegarden · 12/07/2023 22:59

Ground rice pud or semolina with lovely milk and berries

TenOhSeven · 12/07/2023 23:01

No, there is no such thing as a porridge that does not include oats. 🙄

dinmin · 12/07/2023 23:02

Quinoa or polenta?

Stbextherapist · 12/07/2023 23:02

Buckwheat groats - look up recipes for kasha

DontBeAPrickDarren · 12/07/2023 23:02

Congee?

Wenfy · 12/07/2023 23:07
  1. Millet. Indian shops sell it as ‘bajra’ - get the seeds rather than flour but even the flower can be used in porridge.
  2. Cassava - you can use the flour or pound actual cassava (it’s a workout!)
  3. Matoke - This is NOT plantain. Get the Kenyan version. Boil them until they can just be mashed & loaded up.
  4. Amaranth seeds - again buy these from an Indian shop. It’s called rajogaro. It will be a lot cheaper
  5. Chia seeds can also be made into porridge
  6. Pounded rice. Use broken basmati as it’s low in gluten & in Indian shops it’s a lot cheaper (I got 20kg for £10 the other day). You can make porridge (congee / pongal etc) or pound and steam into idli / rice cakes
Randobelia · 12/07/2023 23:08

I think congee would fit.

PickAChew · 12/07/2023 23:08

Semolina is definitely not gluten free. It's just coarse wheat flour.

You can get buckwheat flakes that can make porridge but I find that buckwheat has a slightly off flavour thst I don't enjoy.

This Swedish rice pudding sounds delicious www.thelocal.se/20161216/recipe-how-to-make-swedish-christmas-rice-porridge

I love a good rice pudding and it definitely give warm comfort food vibes, just need to be a bit careful about cream and sugar.

AdaColeman · 12/07/2023 23:52

I like savoury things for breakfast, and my usual porridge is made with water with no sugar added. So thinking along those lines, polenta (maize) would make a comforting dish, as would pease pudding. If you try pease pudding, make it with home made stock as some stock cubes contain gluten.

AdaColeman · 13/07/2023 00:22

You could try sago pudding and tapioca pudding, both are naturally gluten free, and would make a porridge type dish that you could make with milk and add berries, sugar or spices to.

Barley flakes. The Hodmedod ones are nice.

lakapass · 13/07/2023 06:01

Nairs do gluten free oats ?

AdaColeman · 13/07/2023 06:10

Wheat barley and rye all contain gluten.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 13/07/2023 09:16

I’m not a congee person but it is popular!
I know people who make quinoa porridge as well but imagine you’d have to cook it for about 67 years to get the texture you’d want?

Untrained · 13/07/2023 09:27

I have porridge made with quinoa flakes, Ive also used millet flakes (has to be flakes!) Both are gluten free and very much my comfort food! Just add milk (I use soya or almond milk), 4 mins in microwave, bosh!

isthismylifenow · 13/07/2023 09:29

Maize cereal. Do you have a South African shop near you? Look for Pronutro or Future Life.

Mix with milk, hot or cold. Chocolate Pronutro is a fave since childhood.

Fonio.

Some people can't even eat those because oats contain a protein similar to gluten, called avenin.

JoyApple · 14/07/2023 11:05

Thank you everyone for the recommendations

@Untrained where do to buy your quinoa flakes and millet flakes from? What do they taste like? I'm worried about bitter taste

There's a company called quinola that do quinoa flakes. They need cooking for longer than oats ime, but not bad, not bitter. I tend to do half and half with oats or use for overnight oats so can't 100% vouch for them for porridge but I think they would be worth a shot?
