Baking required for school - very hot, outdoors, easy!!

Can anyone help my tired brain please.

My kids primary school has sports day on Wed, and parents have been asked to bake for a cake sale. It’s going to bet very hot on Wed, all all the cakes will be sat outside …. And I’m crap at baking . I also have to work tmrw so will have to pop to the supermarket en route for ingredients .

I was planning to strategically forget but my 5yo has been reminded at school to remind me, and will be really sad if we don’t take something in on Wed morning. 😩

What is very easy to make , vegetarian, that won’t melt / go rank sat out in the heat?!

ideal option would be a hack type recipe where I don’t actually have to bake ! I was thinking a jus-rol thing adapted ? But not sure if this will be passable !

I thought of crispy cakes but they’ll melt won’t they.

something with ready made meringues ? Can I just stick something onto them ?!

Need to make it tmrw eve!

helppp!!

Thank you !

Shortbread made with vegetarian spread?

dementedpixie · 19/06/2023 21:00

Banana muffins with sultanas?
Carrot cake muffins minus any icing

dementedpixie · 19/06/2023 21:02

Cookies - oatmeal and raisin maybe rather than chocolate chip

violetscarlet · 19/06/2023 21:02

Flapjacks

EezyOozy · 19/06/2023 21:04

I was thinking shortbread , maybe a lemon one to make it summery. Worried I’ll even mess that up though! Thank you for ideas !

Hmm after years of tying myself in knots for these sorts of events I would now advise going to the supermarket and buying a couple of trays of flapjack. Remove from trays cut into slightly non uniform pieces, possibly melt some chocolate over the top, but perhaps not in the heat, put in a tin and pass off as homemade 😂

I know it’s not always in the spirit but if you are short on time at least you gave contributed something!

Beargrumps22 · 19/06/2023 21:18

Def something biscuity like shortbread or cookies so no one will end up with melted cakes or worse food poisining

Lol. I used to buy plain fairy cakes, spread a bit of ready made icing on the top and let ds go mad with sprinkles.

Achdinnae · 19/06/2023 21:23

Apple or other fruit pie. You can buy readymade pastry and tins of filling.

MarmiteRoll · 19/06/2023 21:28

But two packets of ready to bake cookie dough from the supermarket. Cook as instructed. Pretend you made them yourself. Job done.

Snugglemonkey · 19/06/2023 21:33

What about lemon and lavender shortbread. The flavours are summery, but hard to cock up.

SeeingSpots · 19/06/2023 21:38

For the love of all that is good please don't waste any more brain power on this, just buy something and take it in. I'm going to be honest most people don't want to eat other people's home made food especially if it's been made with or decorated by a small child.

But something like flapjacks or a pack of mini gingerbread men and everyone will be much more grateful.

Clarabellawilliamson · 19/06/2023 21:43

Yeah, no one even pretends their offerings are home made at my kids school. No one cares, it's easier to monitor allergens and easier all round!

APurpleSquirrel · 19/06/2023 21:47

I'm a PTA Chair & we ask for cake donations for a couple of events & I honestly don't care if people make or buy the cakes they bring in, just that they've bothered to actually do it tbh.

Doughnuts are hugely popular with kids & veggy, or bags of giant cookies or flapjacks etc. Don't sweat it, honestly if they're not just grateful you've brought something then they're stuck up they're own arse!

declutteringmymind · 19/06/2023 21:48

Buy some cookie dough. Chop it up and put it in the oven. Don't eat them all. Send them to school.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/06/2023 21:51

Have they actually specified home made? Who has the time and funds for that? Baking aint cheap.

Go and buy a tray of cookies or doughnuts from the supermarket.

I bet there isn't a single dad at the school thinking about this.

EezyOozy · 19/06/2023 21:52

Haha thank you all for the sanity check. I’ll be going with one of the “cheat” recipes. I like the flapjack cut up slightly imperfectly with some decorations on. And the cookie dough (I didn’t know you could buy ready made cookie dough!)

Buy shortbread , let the kids put icing and sprinkles on.

LaMarschallin · 19/06/2023 21:53

I second the Rice Crispy Treats.
The recipe I use is slightly different as it uses toffees too.
Main thing is not to panic when you've dumped the marshmallows, butter and toffee in the saucepan. Just keep stirring over a gentle heat and it'll turn into a sort of sweet gravy.
Very little clearing/washing up with these and they don't melt in the heat:

Lovely for a children's party or just as a lunch box treat these rice krispie treats will be a child and adult favourite! Great to make with the kids and you can add extra ingredients into them such as sultanas or chocolate chips!

I bet there isn't a single dad at the school thinking about this.

Thats a losing bet. We had several single fathers in our circle of friends.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/06/2023 21:55

Not that type of single.

EezyOozy · 19/06/2023 21:55

The thing is , with just buying a packet of cookies or whatever , DD really wants to “bake”. (But she’s young enough she’d be happy with one of these hacks / decorating something).

Absolutely op.
Go to the shop get a plain cupcakes, let your dd decorate them.
Do a simple icing- powdered sugar with a few teaspoons of water- you can add some food colouring, get a variety of sprinkles and ta-da.
Don't hassle.
