Is tinned salmon anything like the nice flaked salmon you can buy fresh in a supermarket?

I have taken to salmon, particularly the M&S ready cooked flakey Salomon you can buy, but of course it's quite expensive so I'm hoping to reduce cost by buying tinned salmon but is it gross ? ( as in really bad by comparison) or is it ok to have with a salad for work?

I can't bear all the bones in tinned salmon

GettingMarriedAgain · 18/06/2023 09:35

Tinned salmon is nice in fishcakes

cuckyplunt · 18/06/2023 09:38

I would invest a few pounds in a tin OP, if it’s nasty ( and it generally is) the cat will eat it.

Oldraver · 18/06/2023 09:56

I love tinned salmon, yes the bones and skin are fiddly but the cat lived the juice and skin mashed up

I actually 'treated' myself to some last week and had it with mayonnaise on a crusty roll

I say 'treated' as it was over £2 for a 150g tin

Very different but tinned salmon nice in its own way.

Have a look at frozen salmon in Iceland or IKEA food shop or other supermarkets. It's cheaper and nice. Easy to cook. Throw into oven with whatever flavour you like and Bob's your uncle.

IMO, its better to look at them, as two different foods. I couldn't compare sweetcorn to peas!

I like tinned salmon and cucumber sandwiches; or tinned salmon in fishcakes; whereas I use fresh salmon as the protein in dishes for dinner. If we had cooked fresh salmon left over, DH might have it in sandwiches; but its a rare occurence!

Georgyporky · 18/06/2023 19:21

I was brought up on it - bones & all. Eat or go hungry.

Never touched it since I was old enough to tell DM to FO.

fuckip · 18/06/2023 19:25

I've eaten tinned salmon from M&S and don't remember any bones, if there are any in those then they're unnoticeable. It's fine - slightly different taste but not terrible. I keep a few tins in the food cupboard.

Youknowaboutthepaint · 18/06/2023 19:31

I live tinned salmon, but no it's not the same. I do prefer the skinless/boneless one.

Try it though!

StephanieSuperpowers · 18/06/2023 19:33

I love tinned salmon. Its almost a different food to fresh or hot/cold smoked salmon, but can be wonderful if treated properly. I like it mashed with mayonnaise, black pepper and salt in a sandwich or a pitta pocket. The bones are full of calcium and unnoticeable if you mash it up, they're very soft.

A tinned salmon sandwich can be a very easy, nutritious, tasty and satisfying lunch.

BCBird · 18/06/2023 19:36

Tinned salmon is not cheap. Can u not buy a side of salmon cook it and when cold flake it yourself?

QuintanaRoo · 18/06/2023 19:38

Nooooooo!

I started a thread on here the other week about how bad it is! I love fresh salmon but tinned salmon has vertebra in it!

I quite like tinned salmon if someone else (preferably my mum because she is extremely fussy) has dealt with it, the smell, the soft bones and slimy skin means it isn't for me if I've got to prepare it.

Nowtworthlookingat · 18/06/2023 19:53

Fresh salmon freezes well, either as is, or after cooking (just don't overcook it as it will defrost badly). When I see salmon fillets, or the m&s flakey salmon the op mentioned, on offer I stock up and freeze.

SensitiveB · 18/06/2023 20:00

I only bought tinned once as really didn't like it. The dog didn't mind .
I agree cook fresh, and I found tinned mackerel is very good

Divebar2021 · 18/06/2023 20:19

You can buy it without the bones so I’m not sure why people are complaining about that.

Pandorapitstop · 18/06/2023 20:20

The bones are good for you, but I wouldn't eat them. Skinless and boneless tinned red salmon is nice, just not the same as fresh: a different flavour and texture.

Pandorapitstop · 18/06/2023 20:22

Vertebrae!! 😯

BigFatLiar · 18/06/2023 20:29

I like tinned salmon in a salad or mashed up with a bit of salad cream and used in a sandwich/roll. Fresh is good so is tinned they're just different.

Jacopo · 18/06/2023 21:36

The bones are yummy, all soft and mushy and tasty and full of calcium and collagen.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 19/06/2023 00:41

The texture is similar to tinned tuna. I haven't had the flaked salmon, so not sure. I had fresh, smoked and tinned.

caringcarer · 19/06/2023 00:57

As always you can buy red boneless salmon which is nice, or pink with bones in which is not very nice but although I like the red boneless tinned salmon for lunch, in a wholemeal roll, I still prefer fresh salmon for dinner.

WandaWonder · 19/06/2023 01:45

I love all salmon but as others have said tin, smoked, fillets are all very different

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 19/06/2023 06:49

i'm old and the only salmon i ate as a child was tinned, my mum removed every single bone to make posh sandwiches with pepper and vinegar for tea at christmas and easter! we used to love them. i use it now for sandwiches and fishcakes but am happy to mash up the bones as they are good for you.

They don't taste the same at all, but I do like both and tinned salmon is good to have around as a quick snack. Just buy the skinless and boneless tins.

I haven't had tinned salmon in years but bought some and just eating a sandwich with cucumber. No bones or skin in the tin. It is Princes Red Salmon.
