Is tinned salmon anything like the nice flaked salmon you can buy fresh in a supermarket?

I have taken to salmon, particularly the M&S ready cooked flakey Salomon you can buy, but of course it's quite expensive so I'm hoping to reduce cost by buying tinned salmon but is it gross ? ( as in really bad by comparison) or is it ok to have with a salad for work?

It’s not remotely the same but I’m a fan of both.

spilltheteapot · 17/06/2023 18:48

I love salmon in all its forms EXCEPT tinned as it’s absolutely rancid. All the bones and what not are in there too. It’s nothing like tinned tuna.
Save your money!

hollyblueivy · 17/06/2023 18:49

If buying tinned I'd just have mackerel.

As above, it's a different texture and needs a lot of fiddling with to get rid of the bits of bone and black bits.

BCCoach · 17/06/2023 18:54

It’s completely different, not even the same species of fish (tinned salmon is Pacific sockeye or pink salmon which is not at all like the farmed Atlantic salmon you are talking about). It has a very different taste and texture and is somewhat of an acquired taste unless you were brought up on it. A lot of people find it very slimy and greasy. Personally I love it.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/06/2023 18:56

Tinned salmon is lovely IMO but totally different to the salmon you're having.

Give it a go. It's definitely better than smoked salmon, which is utterly disgusting.

I agree with @Jacopo and @BCCoach. I love tinned salmon, but it's very different from fresh salmon. The bones are extremely soft and good for you, as they are full of calcium. I'm happy to eat the skin too. No idea if it's nutritious or not, but I don't find it unpalatable or offputting.

Skinless and boneless isn't too bad. Except it costs as much as fresh..

Tinned salmon and those awful soft bones 🤮

Stick to fresh!

MillyMollyMango · 17/06/2023 18:59

Salmon tins are also bloody impossible to open

Rainbowreddy · 17/06/2023 19:08

I like both

Begonne · 17/06/2023 19:14

It’s completely different. I love it though - mashed up with a bit of lemon mayonnaise, and a chopped scallion, with crunchy lettuce on some brown bread. it’s worth paying the extra for Alaskan red.

woppydoopy · 17/06/2023 19:16

I've instantly been put off by the bones. It may taste lovely but I can't do Bones lol

They don't taste the same at all, but I do like both and tinned salmon is good to have around as a quick snack. Just buy the skinless and boneless tins.

YoDood · 17/06/2023 19:29

Nope. Completely different flavour - more stale fishy - and lots of soft bones. Bleurgh.

GatesOfBabylon · 17/06/2023 19:31

The best “tinned” salmon are the Fridge Pots by John West.
Far superior to the John West skinless and boneless tins.

None of the bones, skin or gross messing about - I can simply drain. The brine and empty a pot onto some kitchen towels and pat it dry before putting it into a sandwiches.

I dry it as I don’t like wet food particularly.

Gosh, this has bought back memories of tinned salmon and cucumber sandwiches which we often had for Sunday Tea! Not eaten it for years . We always took the larger bones out before mashing it up to go in the sandwich

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 17/06/2023 20:46

Red Sockeye salmon is the only canned one I buy. But I eat all of it. I loved freaking out my friend eating the bones in front of her. Dr's pedestrian told me to mash the bones up in it for ds, same with canned sardines.

Confuzzleduzzled · 17/06/2023 20:50

If you like cooked salmon why not buy it raw and cook it? It will be cheaper than ready cooked.

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 21:04

I like tinned tuna and mackerel but the salmon is gross.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/06/2023 21:12

I've been vegetarian for 43 years so it's a long time since I ate salmon but I do remember beimg underwhelmed at fresh salmon.
I used to get a large tin of John West Pink Salmon as a Christmas present from the Gt Aunt (I know weird, but my choice ) Had to be pink not red. This was mine and mine alone.

Yes the bones were soft , just crush them.
It's the only thing I miss (salmon, not bones !)

Madamecastafiore · 17/06/2023 21:16

Mash it up with vinegar and black pepper and have on whole meal bread with cucumber. Bloody lovely.

808Kate1 · 17/06/2023 21:23

Tinned (boneless) red salmon is good for making quiche, or in sandwiches. Quite expensive though.

RoseMartha · 17/06/2023 21:39

Fresh salmon is better. I dont like the bones in the tinned salmon either. My gran used to make tinned salmon sandwiches on special occasions. Wasn't keen. Salmon paste was even worse.
