Hidden veg - am I being a bit thick?

Saw some 'hidden veg' Heinz pasta shapes today - does this mean they've put mashed up veg in it?

Couldn't they just fortify them with vitamins? I thought the most important point of having 5 a day was to bulk out your poo, stopping you getting cancer?

Can anyone explain?

I have bought these for my two before, taste a bit different to the normal heinz beans, the sauce tastes different, same textures but you can taste the other veg! Not too bad, but its easier to disguise your own veg in stuff!!!

Jesus, what have we come to when we feel the nice to hide and process good food to get kids to eat it.
Ut's absolutely grooss.

But what I'm saying is - isn't mushing up veg defeating the point of eating the veg in the first place?

Fruit juice and smoothies don't count towards your 5 a day for this reason, or am I misguided?

Smoothies do count don't they? As they are the whole fruit, still have the fibre but mushed up.

PeachesMcLean · 21/02/2008 20:48

I thought that a glass of fruit juice or a smoothie could count. However, you wouldn't want 5 glasses of fruit juice - you need a mix of different things.

I don't really understand how baked beans count as 1 portion. IIRC, that's what it says on the side of the tin.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/02/2008 20:49

Hidden veg has it's place I think, but as Moondog says better to get them to just eat the veg in it's normal state.

Lots of tomatoes in the sauce I suppose Peachy.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/02/2008 20:51

I can only count raisins once?

cheeseontoast · 21/02/2008 20:51

My DD is having more portions than I thought then.

I think though that the average Brit seems to think that veg = horrid soggy peas and beans and carrots and then they are surprised when the kids won't eat that stuff.

People don't know how to cook and present them nicely.

Ah! Ta for that Dior.

TurkeyLurkey · 21/02/2008 20:55

I can't see the point in mushing up veg and hiding it in sauces. Its not like we're gonna be doing it for the Dc's when they're in their 20's is it?

Its just I have this friend whose DC (aged 8) won't eat ANY fruit or veg and she tries to hide it in stuff. I just have visions of her doing it when he comes round when he's older with his future wife or something!
