Cakes/bakes to fill up a 14 year old

DS1 is always hungry. He eats well at mealtime but snacks are an issue. They are not healthy snacks and it's costing me a fortune.

I've got out of the habit of baking but would like the get back into it.

I made a few apple cakes in the autumn and put them in the freezer, and they worked well as something not exactly healthy but better than hobnobs.

He doesn't like humus, any fruit really or cucumber. He will eat raw pepper.

I thought maybe carrot cake? Or some other similar loaded things?

Give me your best teen recipes.

I've got a bottomless 19 year old PT and regularly make huge peanut butter and banana flapjacks with chia, flax and coconut oil.

Glastobore · 07/06/2023 08:38

Nigellas breakfast bars are huge faves here but tbh they are very sweet so probably not that healthy. God they are good though.

MissyB1 · 07/06/2023 08:41

Yes flapjacks are the way forward, you can put so much into them. I put dates in mine, ds has no idea what’s in them, he just says they are a good snack.

fruitstick · 07/06/2023 08:43

He's not keen on flapjacks or seeds. He does like nuts though.

But if I make then and he's hungry enough I reckon he'll eat them.

Maybe I'll start with breakfast bars and then slowly make them healthier/less sweet.

Cakes & bakes are not good for filling up, protein is what fills a person up.
If they are not vegetarian, chicken , tuna , egg ? You could bulk it out with a jacket potato or perhaps an omelette . Would they eat wholemeal sandwiches with fillings as above with salad ? How about pasta / pesto ?
Yogurt with added seeds / nuts in ?

7Worfs · 07/06/2023 08:47

Stodgy loafs, like date & walnut loaf?

Though sweet things aren’t that satiating. How about stuff like boiled eggs, cold roasted chicken drumsticks, cans of fish (tuna/sardines/mackerel) on toast, peanut butter on toast?

fruitstick · 07/06/2023 08:47

I've persuaded him to try yoghurt. And have some cold chicken in the fridge.

He doesn't like eggs or sandwiches!

Stuff like millionaire’s shortbread or tiffin are pretty heavy too, so might work?

Greek yoghurt or Skyr are high in protein and thus keep you feeling fuller longer. Nuts - but they're expensive. Savoury muffins?

Toooldtocareanymore · 07/06/2023 08:53

i used to make batches of whole meal cheese scones and blueberry/ raspberry or apple scones -or you could make plain ones as you ds doesn't like fruit , sliced in half and freeze them individually , my dd could defrost one when she wanted by popping it in toaster.

fruitstick · 07/06/2023 08:59

Savoury muffins and scones are good about. I think he'd eat those.

Cheese scones.

Or just offer beans on toast- classic teen food. 1 tin and 4 slices of buttered toast, grated cheese on top.

fruitstick · 07/06/2023 09:04

He doesn't like baked beans!

Or bananas

My adult son has recently realised he isn't eating enough to fuel his 6ft 6" 15 stone body - so has spent lots of time finding out what snacks fill him up. He recently discovered mixing nuts and seeds in bowl and snacking on those were excellent at filling him up. He also mixes it with Greek yogurt for a change. Also makes his own bread, experimenting with fillings and suchlike, makes two small loaves which last two days and is healthier than shop bought bread.

loveisstrange · 07/06/2023 09:18

Fruit cake
Scones - plain/ cheese & herb/ cheese & chilli
Banana bread
Falafel

Whatt · 07/06/2023 09:21

Porridge in the morning will fill him up.

You could also make oat flapjacks

Yeah, for about an hour!

fruitstick · 07/06/2023 09:26

We have porridge in the winter. I may give overnight oats a try.

My now adult dc, liked (and still like) like bean dip with tortilla chips, also cheesy spinach dip with toasted pitas, or with pumpernickle. They buy Pepperettes type of sausage sticks, and eat kolbassa and polish sausage and cheese.

Would they enjoy bread pudding or rice pudding? The carrot cake is good, and banana blueberry muffins too.

I usually made extra and if it was something like lassagna or meatballs or chili, they'd eat that for snacks. They'd make pizza bagels in the toaster oven.
Last but definitely not least, ramen noodles.

Whatt · 07/06/2023 09:52

No more than that. It shuts my teens up till lunch, very filling. Maybe you need to cook it with milk and stir in some peanut butter.

Blingstar · 07/06/2023 10:09

Protein is the way forward here. Fage Greek Yoghurt 5% has the highest protein content. He needs something like that.

Try 5 o'clock apron for snack ideas (Claire Thomson)

redspottedmug · 07/06/2023 13:27

Homemade granola is less of a faff than overnight oats.

I base mine on this recipe and sub stuff in and out
www.pickuplimes.com/recipe/toasted-coconut-almond-granola-123

Eat with milk or Greek yogurt. add a spoon of peanut butter or fresh, stewed or tinned fruit.

Murpe · 07/06/2023 13:31

I use the whole leaf frozen spinach nobbles, cook them until movebale and add strong cheddar, then make into a frittata with a few eggs. Very quick, lasts a couple of days in the fridge, and DS can just cut as much as he needs to get a protein and veg based snack.

  • yoghurt with walnuts/pecans/nut of choice, +/- squirt of honey
  • celery sticks filled with peanut butter
  • Biscuits made with oats, such as anzac biscuits or slice
  • Brownies/biscuits/cakes/snacks made with this healthier nutella:

Muffins.

I do a sort of baked oat bar/cakey thing and adjust the nuts/fruits based on DS' feedback. They work well as they can be frozen so I can take one or two pieces out at lunch time for him to have when he gets home. (recipe below)

Less homemade but I buy char Sui frozen itsu dumplings and DS can microwave those.

He also quite regularly has a jacket potato - I nuke it for a bit in the microwave in advance then when he gets home, into the air fryer for 10 minutes. And he has it with beans/cheese.

Baked oat bar cakes
2 cups Rolled oats
1/2 cup sugar
1.5 teaspoon baking powder
1 tsp Cinnamon
Pinch Salt

2 eggs
1/2 cup milk (any)
1/4 cup butter/oil
Teaspoon vanilla

Mix dry ingredients together and in a separate bowl/jug mix the wet. Then combine them together. Leave to stand for 20 minutes. Then stir in your preferred combination of nuts/seeds/dried fruit up to about 1/2-1 cup. If you like peanut butter, a couple of tablespoons added here is good too.

Bake in a lined baking pan.
180 for 30-35 minutes.
