Talk to me about hot dogs!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2023 09:12

The (adult) dc are coming for dinner at the weekend and have requested a hotdog feast! What can I do with them?

So far I’m thinking:
hotdogs
onions
crispy onions
gherkins
American mustard
barbecue sauce
sauerkraut if I can find any

chipotle roasted corn on the cob

Wedges? Or would potato salad be better? Anybody got a nice recipe for one that isn’t too mayonnaise-ish? Or another idea? Sweet potato wedges never seem to work for me.

Some kind of coleslaw?

Any ideas appreciated!

My family like American style chilli dogs. I use Gordon Ramsay’s recipe

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2023 11:50

That's a great idea, thank you, but I made chilli last time.

If you haven't got tomato ketchup
I'm not coming!

murasaki · 01/06/2023 12:46

Delia does a potato salad with olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, whole grain mustard and black pepper as the dressing, way lighter than a mayo one.

BlackForestCake · 01/06/2023 14:00

Sauerkraut is in every Polish shop and most supermarkets.

There will be no tomato ketchup in this house.

This sounds great. I'll have a google.

Thanks re the sauerkraut info too. Are there any particular brands I should be looking for?

I really love Chicago style hot dogs. Sounds weird but they are really lovely and full of veg. You can’t get the green relish here, but use a sweet sliced gherkin (like you’d put on a burger) and the celery salt may sound odd, but it makes it so don’t skip it!

I make a potato salad with olive oil, red wine vinegar, finely diced red onion, French mustard and honey, with salt and pepper to taste. It’s really nice.

How about some crispy fries on the side?. My kids are having some friends over this weekend for a wiener roast we'll have
Ketchup
Mayo
Pickles
Relish
Banana peppers
Hot sauce
Celery salt
Onions crispy & soft
Chilli
Corn
Fries
Steamed buns
S'mores for afters🔥

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2023 14:52

I've never heard of a Chicago hotdog but they sound lovely. I really like celery salt.

I can't do fries, as I don't 'do' deep frying, but could do wedges.

We do a potato salad with creme fraiche, crispy bacon, cheese and chives.

Auntiehero · 01/06/2023 16:42

I went to a hot dog party once, they had onion rings, mac and cheese, curly fries and various salads. It was lovely.

I prefer German mustard with my hotdogs, so if I do them at home I'll make a German style salad usually a potato salad and a creamy cucumber one. Probably wouldn't work if you're going for American style but very tasty.

Glitterbiscuits · 01/06/2023 17:30

You have to offer tomato ketchup! I'm sure there is a law.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2023 17:37

Oooh - macaroni cheese is a good idea.

The tomato ketchup absence is non-negotiable. It will never darken my doors.

How about tomato relish?

This is acceptable and has been added to the list!

Now.. this may be up your street, I can't tell, but it seems to be popular online.

You get a garlic baguette and slice it down the middle lengthways ( once cooked ) instead of in normal sliced pieces and pop the hot dogs in that, normally take a big one or two averaged sized ones by pictures and then sprinkle cheese on top and grill until bubbly.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 01/06/2023 18:19

French ones are the best. French mustard in a baguette, fried frankfurter(just gently) gruyere cheese, grilled. These (and copious glasses of Kir)kept us going on a cheap and chilly weekend in Paris. Mustard has to sear your sinuses.

Sounds filthy (but gorgeous!). Not for this time, but could definitely be tempted to try it at some point.

We’ve got several different mustards as DP is a mustard fiend, so I’ll put them all out.

I will offer no apology for what I'm about to type..........

PROCESSED CHEESE SLICES.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 01/06/2023 19:37

OP the suggestions you made in your first post are great.

But forget the bbq sauce. You need ketchup instead.

And yes to coleslaw and/or potato salad.

Corn on the cob would be a nice addition.

You've made me starving with this thread 😩

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2023 20:01

@MaMisled DP would be very up for that!

@BlameItOnTheGoose We're just not a ketchup house. As far as I'm aware, neither of the dc have ever eaten it.

Chicago hotdog stand was my first job- illegally when I was a few weeks shy of 15 more than 20 years ago. Very authentic, albeit sketchy.

Still, as an expert hotdog slinger:

Chicago style in this order
yellow American mustard
Relish- agree chop a gherkin, and if you want it sweet, a pinch of sugar in the mix
Raw onion
Tomato and cucumber x2 tucked between hotdog and bun, a set on either side
Celery salt
And a sport pepper eg a hot one

I dislike this though and as a bad ex Chicagoan, I'd do ketchup, mustard and slow grilled onion!

There's some American import shops here if you want real relish. It comes as green or brown. I recommend brown- it is still greenish. Whereas green is a bit too green, looks unnatural.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2023 21:01

I'll make a gherkin relish and a tomato relish, I think.
