No it sounds horrible although I do like spinach in a quiche.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/04/2023 11:44

I might have a crack at it. I love spinach. I see the recipe says 180g of cooked spinach. As we all know, spinach wilts spectacularly once cooked. Do we think that would equate to 500g of raw baby spinach leaves, wilted and very well drained? If using frozen spinach, I might see if 300g would produce 180g cooked spinach. Poor recipe writing not to give this detail.

I do like broad beans and will make the effort to take off the skins, as they are much nicer that way. Would definitely use frozen. I've never had the good luck to eat them freshly picked but frozen are much better than the ones I can buy fresh, as I am a long way from any farm shop.

dudsville · 19/04/2023 13:49

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , have you ever had a pea fresh from the pod that was just picked? Broad beans have a similar juicy freshness when eaten similarly.

handsoffate · 19/04/2023 14:15

It sounds marginally better than Coronation Chicken but still not something I would be interested in making. Think I’ll stick to a toast with something fizzy.

MyGirlDaisy · 19/04/2023 14:24

No, I loathe Quiche of any type!

eddiemairswife · 19/04/2023 14:42

If Waitrose do it, I'll get it with my delivery.

NameOchangeO1 · 19/04/2023 15:33

Quiche is always served at funerals so that is what I associate it with. Nonetheless I will probably give making this one a go. I suspect it might need a load of salt alongside a strong cheese to not be really bland though.

Yes, long ago, and freshly dug potatoes. Gorgeous.

Yes, long ago, and freshly dug potatoes. Gorgeous.

I remember my mum not starting to make the evening meal till my dad was home from work and would dig up some potato’s and pick the beans. It was something he loved doing for us.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/04/2023 06:40

Great memory. I remember my Grandpa doing similar.

He always strikes me as a strange, joyless little man!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 20/04/2023 06:45

No, not a fan of broad beans.

A chef once told me never to eat Coronation chicken in a restaurant as it was only made to use up leftover chicken nearing it use by date. I have heeded this wisdom ever since!

Forever42 · 20/04/2023 06:46

I think I might make it (though probably I will be the only one who eats it!). I have broad beans, chopped spinach and shortcrust pastry in the freezer. Half butter, half lard is quite common for shortcrust but you can use all butter if you prefer.

RoobarbandCustud · 23/04/2023 12:42

Eugh no - spinach is too watery for a quiche and broad beans, just no, out of season. I'll do a vintage cheddar and caramelise onion tart, flavoured with some caraway seeds with a part wholemeal pastry case, made with lard and butter.

wibblewobbleball · 23/04/2023 12:46

crazeecatlady · 18/04/2023 13:01

Does he know the price of broad beans out of season (imported- air miles etc)
Spinach also not the cheapest veg. I'd change some of the ingredients - then it's not Coronation Quiche is it?!

Early Broad beans are in season here in May.

IAgreeWithHim · 23/04/2023 12:49

I made it. made a total hash of it. despite trying to drain the water out of the spinach and lining the bottom with cheese as suggested it ended up being a soggy mess. I'll wait for the supermarkets to start producing it before trying it again. But I could not even eat mine.

I did think it was an interesting choice though.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2023 19:47

I made it today. I used shortcrust pastry I had in the freezer, which cut down the preparation time a lot. I used frozen broad beans and went to the effort of removing the skins. I had some very nice fresh spinach, wilted it and drained it as well as I possibly could - squeezed out a lot of water. A little dried tarragon. Plenty of black pepper, a bit of salt. A lot of extra mature cheddar, more than the recipe specified. We ate it warm (not hot) from the oven. I thought it was lovely.

This is a very good guide. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/apr/17/more-like-spinach-pie-felicity-cloake-tests-king-charles-and-camillas-coronation-quiche

‘More like spinach pie’: Felicity Cloake tests King Charles and Camilla’s coronation quiche

What does Guardian cookery queen Felicity Cloake think of the king’s celebration quiche recipe?

greenspaces4peace · 07/05/2023 01:22

I absolutely love the tarragon flavor!!

Coronation Quiche - will you be baking it?
imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 07/05/2023 08:38

We thought it was delicious. DS2 ate about half of it and asked if we can make it again.

OnYerBikeSteve · 08/05/2023 20:19

I made this for supper with new potatoes and a herb salad and the whole thing has gone. DH had thirds. I would genuinely make it again for a summer lunch or picnic.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/05/2023 20:25

No. I'll stick with the cheesy baked eggs from a while ago...
